Henry Gross – Shannon Lyrics 6 years ago
I saw Henry Gross last night as the support act for Joe Brown. Henry explained that he met with Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys, who told him that his dog Shannon had died. Henry also had a dog called Shannon and Carl's loss affected him deeply. He went home that night and sat with his own Shannon and wrote this song.

The Kinks – Days Lyrics 14 years ago
It’s over.

The writer wishes it wasn’t, but can’t let go and just has to talk, even though their loved one is not there to listen — and they thank them for how good it was and say that the memory will stay with them forever.

In all this misery, they then say that they knew all along that the lover would leave them, but that their presence remains always and it was worth the pain.

This is a song which stops you in your tracks and is both beautiful and painful at the same time.

Sweet – Ballroom Blitz Lyrics 15 years ago
Glam Rock at it's outrageous best. Electric.

The Cure – One Hundred Years Lyrics 15 years ago
The Caterpillar is my favourite Cure track, with this a very close second. From the excitement of the heavy beat of the introduction to the shock of the first line, through to the build of “over and over we die one after the other” then right up by degrees to the title line. What does it mean? – I think it’s about struggling, fear and dread all caught up in the nightmare of trying to escape. This is the Cure at their absolute best.

Marianne Faithfull – The Ballad of Lucy Jordan Lyrics 15 years ago
I think she’s gone to pieces because she realises that life has passed her by and she’ll never achieve the things she always thought would happen “one day”. She’s given her life to her husband and children, they don’t need her any more and she can’t go back to being a young girl having fun. Sadly, she breaks down at the realisation of this and has to be taken away for her own safety.

Gordon Lightfoot – Sundown Lyrics 15 years ago
A very horny song. The dirty bugger is obviously doing something he knows he shouldn't ! Lovely guitar work.

Eagles – New York Minute Lyrics 15 years ago
On the Hell Freezes Over DVD, Don Henley introduces this track by saying "this is about appreciating what you've got". I think the saddest and most poignant line is "baby I've changed, please come back". You can really feel the loneliness in this haunting song.

The Monkees – Propinquity (I've Just Begun To Care) Lyrics 16 years ago
"The propinquity effect is the tendency for people to form friendships or romantic relationships with those whom they encounter often. In other words, relationships tend to be formed between those who have a high propinquity" from Wilkipedia. This is why so many relationships start at work. Lovely song, not typical of what the Monkees are usually known for, with a very heavy Mike Nesmith influence. Just one of many beautiful album tracks by this band that really deserve a good listen.

Barry Manilow – When I Wanted You Lyrics 16 years ago
Powerful, strong, full of emotion and full of history between the two people (what was wrong and who was right). The most heart-rending line is "and I still can't bring myself to say I'm over you". You can't help feeling sorry for the guy. He's been through tough times, but he's picking himself up and gathering the strength to turn his back at last - but it's hard for him because he still has feelings.

Yes – Close to the Edge Lyrics 16 years ago
I play this track a lot because there are several fantastic sections within it. First of all the silence, gradually followed by the birds. This bit is great because you know you've got the whole track ahead of you. Then the build to the first crashes of music - and it suddenly drops again and hovers over the first verse into the beautiful melody of the chorus. You then get into the swing of the track, but there are more surprises to come - getting up and getting down. There's a feeling of real exhaustion at the end - now that it's all over and done - and back we go to a similar sound to the introduction - tired, but feeling satisfied with the mystical journey Yes have taken us on.

Cabaret – Tomorrow Belongs To Me Lyrics 16 years ago
The scene in the film version is set in a roadside cafe and the Hitler Youth come in to encourage people to join the party by singing this very rousing, patriotic song. When you see the reaction of the crowd, you can understand how Nazi Germany grew.

Adam Ant – Prince Charming Lyrics 16 years ago
Fantastic video, but I think he damaged his back doing the stunt where he crashes through the window swinging on the chandelier and suffered pain in later life.

T. Rex – Lofty Skies Lyrics 16 years ago
The most beautiful song in the world - ever. The introduction, the guitar, the words, the sentiment, the era. Brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it in 1971 and I've loved it, and Marc, ever since.

Peter Frampton – Lines on My Face Lyrics 16 years ago
This song drips with pain and calls out for help, but he knows that only time will heal. In the meantime, he's got to deal with practicalities like heating the house and putting on a brave face for the people who are trying to help him through it. Despite the heartache he's going through, he doesn't want the dream erased, even though they wake him up. He will never accept defeat, although this prolongs the agony. The slow beat of the live version tears your heart out even more. Powerful track.

Elton John – Someone Saved My Life Tonight Lyrics 16 years ago
When he went on to marry Renata Blauel on Valentines Day 1984, I was very surprised that the newspapers didn't headline with "No-one Saved His Life Last Night" the morning after the marriage. Fancy The Sun missing that one ! Anyway, great song, love the way it builds, and I think we can all identify with the line "thank God my music's still alive".

T. Rex – One Inch Rock Lyrics 16 years ago
Cracking good Bolan track. There are different versions of this, but my favourite is the one with the long introduction. By the time the lyric begins, you're well away and can't stop rocking. By the end of the first verse, you're deep in Marc's magical, mystical world. At the end of the track, you're completely exhausted. Great stuff !!

The Cure – A Chain of Flowers Lyrics 16 years ago
The first verse of this makes me imagine an elderly couple, and the wife wakes up one morning to find that her husband has died during the night. She desperately tries to wake him up, panicking about being left on her own and remembering all the happy times together. Makes you cry.

Dark, deep, despairing - you really feel the awful pain of the spurned lover. Beautiful, compelling song.

Hazel O'connor – Will You? Lyrics 16 years ago
What an honest song. "Feeling all fingers and thumbs, I spill my tea, oh silly me." Wondering what he wants to do. Will he stay, will he politely turn away? Then the powerful moment when "we touch" and it all happens and the sax plays on into the night. Really grabs you.

Marillion – Bitter Suite Lyrics 16 years ago
Blue Angel is my favourite piece on Misplaced Childhood. Amidst all the madness of the broken relationship, the war widow in the laundrette, the interview when "maybe, I've already gone crazy" and finally "I will wear your white feather, I will carry your white flag", within all this, there's a moment of relief and tenderness and although he had to pay two hundred franks for sanctuary, nothing is said about the seedy side of the room of dancing shadows where all the heartaches disappear, but the outstanding fact is that during the aftermath before they part, she makes a fairly trivial statement, but it hits him so powerfully that he remembers it forever.

Neil Young – After the Gold Rush Lyrics 16 years ago
Beautiful song. I first heard this by a band called Prelude with a girl singer around 1972. Can't decide which version I like best, but I suspect Neil has the edge. The meaning - who knows? There's been a devastation, then its over and the sun bursts through the skies and maybe he dies slowly dreaming of the silver space ships flying and finally goes to heaven and a new home in the sun. Powerful stuff, whatever it means.
