Iron & Wine – Cinder and Smoke Lyrics 12 years ago
I think you'll all overshooting its meaning as being deeper than it is. I love this song, but I think its more of a storytelling than a complete metaphor. I don't think it has anything to do with a love relationship in the sense others are seeing. It, to me, has to do with family relationships and the past. Obviously the snake bit and the juniper bending are metaphors, but I digress. The point is as a whole its a story of an event, and the emotions surrounding it. It definitely isn't about sex.

Its about his girlfriend (or just friend, sister or wife or what-have you; not a crucial detail), and she lives (or is visiting maybe?) in a farm house with the mother and father. The line "Cinder and smoke, You'll ask me to pray for rain, With ash in your mouth, You'll ask it to burn again" is the most crucial verse of the song- I'll explain in a minute.

The mother was drunk, and accidentally started a fire on a stormy night. The dog was panicked and ran through the muddy garden, accidentally bringing the laundry through it. He's calling to the girl to take his hand so they can escape (physically the burning house, metaphorically the family).

The metaphorical aspect is the family's life in the house (and the drama with it). At first the girl says to pray for rain to help with the fire, but then after that thought realizes she doesn't care if this house and its family are saved. They want to leave the alcoholic mother and the poor farm house with all that it resembles behind. At the end the firefighters try to remove an important picture the father saved, possibly one of happier days for the family- that is what he clings to; he doesn't want to let it go. The girl wants to let it go, or at least the song is emphasizing the internal crisis of her feelings and her love for her parent, but her hatred for them at the same time.

The sex idea seems to stem from the verse "Give me your hand and take what you will tonight, I'll give it as fast and high as the flame will rise" I can see the sex idea, but I think its more about the rage the girl feels. Its more about the singers love for the girl in that he's saying he'll do anything for her in either direction. He wants her to be happy. The singer will fully support her in wanting to take anything from her past, or to let it go in the flames. Its about love, but not really sex, as no woman would feel like having sex during an event like this.

As a storytelling, this song has great details; enough to really help you envision the house, the chaos, and the emotion.

Sleigh Bells – Rill Rill Lyrics 13 years ago
I think its not only about "teen troubles", but also teen drug use, and in particular cocaine. For me anyway, this is expressed as (presumably) 2 good friends trying cocaine in the school bathroom. The "Six sets straight, ace Cut 'em in the bathroom" (possibly six straight lines, albeit a lot of coke, but who are we to judge?).Also what ties into this theory is "Click, click saddle up see you on the moon then" which is easily symbolism for getting high; since the phrasing here is directed to someone else, we can make the assumption about at least 2 participants in total.

An alternate (and personally imo, less likely) option is a suicide pact.

on her youtube video blog she says she was inspired to write it when she became pregnant. It was a message to her child that they "better not try to pull one over" on her.

Fantastic Plastic Machine – Dear Mr Salesman Lyrics 14 years ago
These lyrics ore incorrect. These are to a remix, not the original. While I am not nearly 100 percent with these, I feel they are much more appropriate than whats listed above.

(Are we taking care of our old customers?)

You call him Mr. Salesman,
So who he really is.
They call him Mr. Salesman,
How cute and cool,
We call him Mr. Salesman,
What a gentle guy!
I call him Mr. Salesman, nice to see you again.

He finds himself any gadget
Every day, every night he got an idea why I fawn
Mr. salesman why i love him so.

He buys himself any gadget,
But he has every way
He hit my cheeks to guess
Love him to pieces,
Just like in his heart,
And the time must be smilin', just inside this future world.

(I'm tired of picking up your tabs at the bunny club)

You call him Mr. Salesman,
So tell me Who he really is
They call him Mr. Salesman,
How fun and hip,
We call him Mr. Salesman,
What a pushy guy!
I call him Mr. Salesman,
Pleased to meet you again!

Everytime anywhere he says what i wanna get and while he can fawn me.
Mr. salesman, love him so!

(Yes, what is it llamar Jean?)

It's not a basic material,
Ooo la la, Finally,
I found it in my hands.
Love him to pieces just like in his heart, and the time must be smilin', especially in this future world!

(Baba baba baba.. etc)

(I can't believe it!)

You call him Mr. Salesman,
So who he really is.
They call him Mr. Salesman,
How cute and cool,
We call him Mr. Salesman,
What a gentle guy!
I call him Mr. Salesman,
Nice to see you again.

(That's a good idea.)

(One million dollars.)

(Yes.)

(very good!)

(Laughter, then clicking)

Bebel Gilberto – Jabuticaba Lyrics 16 years ago
A Jabuticaba fruit is as described in the some black hard on the outside, but has a sweet flesh. Here Bebel is describing to someone that they are relatable to the fruit beth in its physical nature as well as the memories the fruit brings to her.
