Simon and Garfunkel – Cloudy Lyrics 9 years ago
Agree with fixable, this song seems to be about drugs or mental illness

"My thoughts are scattered and they're cloudy"

The more you listen to it, the more you can feel there's a subtle undercurrent of impulsion and paranoia actually - for example:

"Sometimes I think it's hanging down on me."

"Got some pictures in my pocket and a lot of time to kill."

"Why don't you show your face and bend my mind?"

"And they linger there to die."

Overall the song is just kinda gentle and random, but I feel there's a sort of weird impulsiveness there too.

Simon and Garfunkel – Flowers Never Bend With The Rainfall Lyrics 9 years ago
Very interesting song

"My mind dances and leaps in confusion.
I don't know what is real,
I can't touch what I feel
And I hide behind the shield of my illusion."

His mind is confused, he can't work out what's real, he's feeling things that can't really be touched?
I suppose feeling something might be more of an emotional feeling, so you can't touch an emotion.
Or maybe this is some sort of hallucination, like he feels something that isn't really there?
His illusion could mean he is creating an illusion for himself for other people, or that he's literally seeing illusions created by his mind that dances and leaps in confusion?

"The mirror on my wall
Casts an image dark and small
But I'm not sure at all it's my reflection."

The mirror might represent other people telling him that he's a certain way, but he's not sure whether that's a true reflection of himself.

"So my fantasy
Becomes reality,
And I must be what I must be and face tomorrow."

To him a fantasy may seem like reality, he's decided that he must just accept who he is and take things day by day.

The nice thing about these songs is that the words can have double meanings it seems and are quite open to interpretation.

Sting – Windmills Of Your Mind Lyrics 10 years ago
It's about thought itself, I like to think, wait I just thinked then - I think this thought is going around in circles! That was a thought too, and then...

Anyways - thought, paranoia, inspiration, memories - that is what I think this song is about.

UB40 – Present Arms Lyrics 10 years ago
Obviously about war, I wasn't born in the 80s so I can't tell whether or not this may be inspired by the Falklands war... was this song before or after the Falklands?

The Specials – Ghost Town Lyrics 10 years ago
yea and another comedy this was in is Father Ted - when the DJ forgot all his records and just played this on a continuous loop all night.

I wasn't born then - but even I get shivers down my spine hearing this when it's not randomly being used in various comedies for some reason!

UB40 – One In Ten Lyrics 10 years ago
(I didn't grow up in the 80s)
But - I think the one in ten thing means that one in ten people were unemployed (not a one in ten chance of getting a job as fergi suggested)
Still, that was an average across the whole country and in some towns up north almost everyone was unemployed.

The Rolling Stones – Get Off Of My Cloud Lyrics 10 years ago
To me this song is about what it's like living in halls at uni!

Love the imagery of kicking someone off a cloud - great stuff!

Simon and Garfunkel – Mrs. Robinson Lyrics 10 years ago
I think sebastianquilt is right - although it's true that the meanings of songs can be subjective I think it's intresting to find out what inspired the artist to write those lyrics.
My maths teacher also mentioned the meaning to this song before I looked on here, and he's a big Paul Simon fan. Lots of Simon & Garfunkels songs have dark meanings, people say that 60s music is all 'happy clappy', but only because they don't listen properly.

Pulp – F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. Lyrics 10 years ago
In this song, it's like love is a drug and he's talking about the comedown.

Pulp – I Spy Lyrics 10 years ago
To me it's not nessesarily about class war...

You see I spy for a living
And I specialise in revenge
On taking the things I know will cause you pain

Maybe this song is telling the story of a guy who used to work for the MOD or the SAS, but now he's retired he doesn't know what to do except sit on his arse all day. He sees the relationship in this song as a kind of war against some guy by sleeping with his wife, 'taking the things I know will cause you pain' is like some sort of hostage situation

Do you think I do these things for real?
I do these things just so I survive
And you know I will survive

again, sounds like guerilla warfare

'I know the ways your minds work
I've studied
And your minds are just the same as mine
Except that you are clever swines
You never let mask slip
You never admit to it'

espionage? torture?

Eels – Ant Farm Lyrics 10 years ago
It's about... anyone you like.
Sometimes the good thing about songs is it can mean diferent things to different people.
For me it's my dad.
Love a few things, hate a few things, you are one of them. It's deliberatly vague, For me it's about the confusion of weather you love or hate someone.
This is an incredibly powerful song.

Eels – The Medication Is Wearing Off Lyrics 10 years ago
Earlier in the album 'Electro Shock Blues' there is a song 'I am OK', This song is possible about mental health medication wearing off, feeling very trippy and not being able to keep track of time.

Eels – Souljacker, Pt. II Lyrics 10 years ago
I love this song - he sounds just so tired and paranoid. I don't know what it's really about, but to me sounds like someone who has lived in a really rough place, who's had everything taken from them and fears being killed.
'he can hang my neck from the old flagpole'
a referance to the persecution of black people in the USA? Or maybe I'm reading too much into that.
The 'souljacker' could be a play on 'car-jacker', as in someone who steals cars. Maybe he's just an ordinary guy who's had everything stolen from him, and now feel so paranoid, he's worried they'll take his soul.
'[but atleast they] can't get my soul' is his only comfort, beautiful sound.

Eels – Souljacker, Pt. I Lyrics 10 years ago
It's just a really fast song, I don't think the lyrics to this one are meant to mean much but it sounds really good anyways.

Eels – My Beloved Monster Lyrics 10 years ago
I thought the line was:
'If she wants she will DESTROY you'

It's about E's many relationships with girls that are rather... eccentric. She has mood swings and temper-tantrums, and has a hang-up about sex.

Also see 'Beautiful Freak' on the same album.

Eels – Friendly Ghost Lyrics 10 years ago
If you read E's autobiography 'Things the Grandchildren Should Know', this is one of the songs where he explains exactly what this song means. I didn't think the book was going to be that interesting, but I was leant a copy from a die-hard EELs fan when I had only listened to the Souljacker album, and now I'm a huge fan of both the book and all the album, he's truly a genius and the emotions in all his songs are very justified considering some of the amazing and horrific things he's been through.

Eels – Woman Driving, Man Sleeping Lyrics 10 years ago
I think this is basically about that feeling of excitement you get when driving at night and you feel tired, you get this sort of extra energy boost that makes you more aware of everything. This song is just tapping into that feeling so that you feel like that when you listen to it.

'white lines shooting by on the pavement like the sky
looking straight ahead into the black'

I think it's also about journeys in general, taking a leap into the unknown and having the determination to not look back and worry about wether or not you are doing the right thing, though I like to think the man and woman are in the same car, and are simply taking turns at sleeping.

Eels – World Of Shit Lyrics 10 years ago
E's dad actually was a 'troubled genius', he was a talented physicist and mathematician, but he got into strange theories about paralell dimensions revolving around the schrodinger's cat thing which were never taken seriously, except by physics students on dope.

I guess the lyrics are a bit crude, but the track itself sounds excellent, E can do no wrong.

Eels – Tiger In My Tank Lyrics 10 years ago
I dodn't know 'tiger in my tank' was an advertising jingle!

I always thought it was about suppresed rage, like a tiger trapped in a tank, and this verse:

i had a dream last night
the tv and the phone
grew some legs and took a walk
and left me all alone

might be about how people walk out on him, and even the TV and the phone, his last connection to other people, might walk out on him too. Maybe the reason he brought a rockstars ashes is for company, like he's got a connection to someone famous who everyone likes.

Eels – Guest List Lyrics 10 years ago
E is such an amazing artist because he never ever makes compromises in order to become more famous or get more money. However, allthough his music is whats most important to him, he might still secretly wish his music was world famous.
It's about a scene where some guy is trying to get into a VIP area, but the bouncer stops him and has to use his walky talky to check his name is on the list, which it isn't. This song describes the contradiction of knowing the whole celebrity culture thing is stupid, but wishing he had his own walky talky that can reach someone even more important, and stop other people from getting in to his own world, just to show them what it's like, what it's like to feel like an eggshell that's about to crack!

Oasis – The Importance Of Being Idle Lyrics 11 years ago
mixedtasteinmusic, people think songs are about drugs because rockstars... ARE on drugs (ghasp!)
I hope this song is about being on drugs because it gives it more depth, I'm not so interested in a song about being reluctant to get any work done.

Oasis – The Importance Of Being Idle Lyrics 11 years ago
This is the only Oasis song I really like, but this one is really really amazingly good, it reminds me of The Kinks' Sunny Afternoon. Plus, the video is one of the best pop videos ever.

The Kinks – Victoria Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song is definatly sarcastic, or maybe I see it like that because I personally hate British imprialism (and I'm British btw). I didn't grow up in the 60s and I don't really know much about the Kinks, except through their music. I just don't get why a 60's rock band would be into conservatism and the British empire.

The Kinks – See My Friends Lyrics 11 years ago
before I looked here, I thought it was "playin' 'cross the river' !
Kinda sounds like a kid crying when he says it, so I thought it was about a warzone or something!
