New Order – The Village Lyrics 1 year ago
@[ozizushi:44871] Yes, the song was written/released about 3 years after Ian's death. I remember at the time thinking that the band would reference Ian in some way. I think this is it.

I went to see Peter Hook and the Light a couple of days ago. They did some songs from Power, Corruption and LIes but not this one.

However, Peter did ask us all to think about Ian before they performed Atmosphere.

Bruce Springsteen – Brilliant Disguise Lyrics 12 years ago

Brilliant Disguise has been described as one of the greatest love songs, although you would be unlikely to find it on a compilation of love songs! I think some of the comments here are right. Springsteen was probably influenced by what was going on in his life but the song is bigger than the personal and applies to all of us. It is a reflection on the nature of love and realtionships, can you ever be sure of another's feelings?

Steve Earle – Copperhead Road Lyrics 13 years ago
I am grateful for this comment by littlechicago1. I have always thought that Copperhead Road sounded like a real place.
This is one of the great American songs by one great American artist.

A couple of the comments here refer to the use of bagpipes. They sound more like Uillean pipes or Irish bagpipes. That sound may actually be electronic, either way they add to the 'heritage' feel of the song. Steve Earle is tapping into a deep, long felt and heart felt sentiment about the early settlers and frontiersmen. He sings about generations and the music reflects this. The music is rich in instruments and rhythm. The song is a masterpiece, it even puts Springsteen to shame in terms of combination of lyricism and musicality. You can return to this song any time and it still sounds as fresh.

Journey – Don't Stop Believin' Lyrics 13 years ago
Truely one of the great songs to express the American Dream.
And that is something worth believing in.

Blur – The Universal Lyrics 14 years ago
I think that there are a number of comments here that give the song it's meaning.

There isn't just one drug like the Universal that helps obscure the grim nature of reality, there's a whole collection of things that distract us. The mass media, movies, TV etc. all assist in making life
seem better than it really is.

U2 – Magnificent Lyrics 15 years ago

One has to accept that here is a continuous interaction between the artistic and the religious in U2's music.
So I can see why some may understand this as a religious song about the magnificence of divine love
but others understand it as a hymn to the muses which inspire U2's music and life.
There is no contradiction here, not all muses are divine but many are.

Also, does the song not sound a little like 'New Year's Day" (which is not necessarily a bad thing)?

U2 – I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For Lyrics 15 years ago
I think that abstract dam is close to the meaning here. It's rare in a pop/rock song for someone to bare their soul in this way. But the lines quoted, 'I believe in the Kingdom Come...You carried the cross And my shame You know I believe it' followed by the proclamation, 'But I still haven't found what I'm looking for..' reveals a real truth not a learned truth or a recycled one like so much of the stuff that passes for Christianity. Bono is suggesting that he has listened to the evangelical ideas, he has even accepted them. But the simple reality of God as Love is so much bigger than that. A truth to be explored. A truely amazing song.

New Order – Ceremony Lyrics 16 years ago
There does seem to be a feeling of unfulfilling ritual about the song. I have always liked the intensity of the music which adds depth to the lyrics. I have wondered whether Ian Curtis has been watching The Third Man before writing 'Ceremony' as I am always reminded of the long shot in the cemetary when I hear this song.

Roxy Music – Mother of Pearl Lyrics 16 years ago
I think simonevans is right about the two parts (diptych). The legend is that the first part was recorded and then the band only had the music to work from. Ferry went off, wrote down a few lines and then produced a 'stream of consciousness' which makes up all the second part of the song.

Along with 'In Every Dream home' this is one of Roxy's best songs.
