10,000 Maniacs – More Than This Lyrics 8 years ago
This song is to me a praise of the present, like a modern Carpe Diem. We have to accept life as it is, enjoy it as it is, the moment is precious since it is all we have. We shouldn't be wasting life worrying about its meaning and requiring further explanation, as there may not be any. Like the "Fallen leaves in the night", we can't say we're blowing and it shouldn't matter.
This song is about not clinging to delusions, but the general tone is positive and life affirming. It invite us to be "as free as the wind" with our own human condition.

Bastille – Overjoyed Lyrics 9 years ago
indeed this song seems to be about convincing a depressed person to open up.
I had to battle depression myself, and i remember one of the most striking features is how it makes one feel so lonely and unreacheable, because there is no way to communicate in words this very subjetive feeling of hopelessness. The temptation to simply isolate from the world and avoid misunderstanding is huge. Depressed people often suffer silently giving very few hints -- "The calling in the dead of night" is a metaphor for that, since the dead of night is a time where people are usually not paying atention to and only those who are awake can listen to subtle noises. A call for help from someone depressed is usually as subtle as that.
The narrator sensibly sees his friend is in pain and worries about that.
He still reminds us even though words cannot describe the whole human experience or express the entire suffering one may be through, they are still "all we have" to make a connection, a meaningful bond with others. Avoiding making that connection in a time of despair will bring no gain and the lonely person will always keep "falling off the fence that way".

Imogen Heap – Clear the Area Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the message on this song is to someone having a bad time (depression, heartbreak..). I don't think it necessarily involves sexual/romantic expectations. It's simply about telling someone you care about you'll always be available to help him/her in their darkest hours, but also will respect his/her privacy and space.

"Knock knock, are you alone?
No one's out here and I was not followed"

She's paying a visit to this friend who is emotionally isolated in sadness/depression and doesn't want this person to be alarmed thinking she comes with someone else who might witness him/her in depression. When you are in a bad time, you don't want any unexpected guest knocking on your door since you won't be able to give them attention. Instead Imogen implicitly tells him/her she's not there to seek attention, but to give attention.

"Love love, you're already home
Party's over and you don't look so good"

Maybe "party" is a metaphor for "good times". This person used to be happy before the heartbreak/depression/etc. Doesn't necessarily means a real, physical party.

"No need to stay as it's always nothing
But your eyes tell a whole other story
And I feel the weight of the world"

Imogen knows this person fells embarrassed by her/his sadness and doesn't want to admit his/her depression (hence always keeps telling Imogen it's "nothing" to worry about)and possibly fears to be seen as weak. That's why Imogen comforts this person, saying she/he can completely trust her, she won't think any less of him/her and won't bring other people with her when she visits him/her to respect this delicate moment.

"I won't talk
I won't try
Just move
It's too still in your sadness"

Imogen is very sensible and knows she must be there for her friend without becoming another burden. So she won't invade his/her space. That's why she says "I won't talk", "I won't try". She wants to help him/her deeply, but at the same time she knows she can't push this person against his/her will. The person won't admit he/she needs help ("it's always nothing") and Imogen suffers with that and feels "the weight of the world", because she's not foolish and can see in his/her eyes "another story".

"Slowly, darling
Nobody means any more to me than you
If you're in, baby then I'm in (into this)
With you always
Careful, close to the edge (you're scaring me)
Fall into my arms (where did it all fall)
Fall into love (love)"

The same message: Be patient, things will work out. Don't do anything impulsive, since you're "close to the edge". Imogen fears this person may commit suicide or violence against himself or others. She says he/she is not alone, because she is with him/her ("If you're in, baby then I'm in").

"You'll find your way back down
And I'll keep the area clear
(Please clear the area)"
She expects this person will overcome this problem, and even if she/he doesn't ask for her help, she'll keep "the area clear" to him/her and won't ask for anything in return.

"When you find your way back down
In one piece
Then I'll just be waiting here
Right here"

Imogen knows that when this person is healed, their relationship will be fine again and possibly stronger.

She's Jewish but not strictly religious. She said recently: "I don't even know half the time what exactly I believe. I do know that in some moments, I'm sarcastic about religion, and sometimes, I'm in awe of it, and sometimes, I'm angry at it, and sometimes, I love it."

"And the hand of the watchman
In the night sky
Points to my beloved
A knight in crystal armour"

Could this be a reference to the Statue of Liberty, standing as the watchman from the Song of Solomon?
In the song of Solomon, the woman asks the watchman where her true lover is, and then finds him. But on these lines the hand points to the sky, giving us the idea that her lover is unknown to her. So the implicit message here is that is Utopian to nourish expectations for this love, and unrealistic to suffer seeking a prince charming (or a knight in crystal armour) who will satisfy all your deepest needs.

That's why Natasha kind of envies Pearl(I think she said once Pearl was "brave" and also the fact that she used to impersonate her in NY indicates that).
Or at least she envies Pearl's abilities to live freely, not being attached to love ideals and accepting life as it is, with no mystifications. But at the same time, Pearl also scares her, since she doesn't want to give up love, even if it hurts her heart badly (it reminds me her song "Sarah").

Interesting this New York background story.. It seems the story is about feeling lonely and not able to find love (good love) and be in peace at the same time.
Although she had a boyfriend, they were distant and it seemed that they couldn't feel complete together (like two suns blinding each other every time they come close). She created a "cloak made of rainbow colors" (in my point o view this expresses the idea of creating a mask of denial, since she is struggling to admit the idea they are not right for each other). So she puts bright colors to hide the fact their relationship is not working (neither her relationship with the NYC) and she creates the alter-ego Pearl. There's a lot of heartbreak energy in this song and hope of finding real love. This song is a lot like "Good love".

Bat for Lashes – Siren Song Lyrics 14 years ago
I think the end is more like:

"And the stars are exploding in your eyes
It won't be long until you'll be running
No, it won't be long until you're running
And it won't be long until you're running
And it won't be long until you'll be running
Cause I'm evil (x2)"

I think she alternates between "you'll be running" and "you're running".

Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is so clear to me. Its not about a person in specific nor a relationship of two people but about the humanity in general and how we all(humans) are now. As the world has become industrialized, people have lost their meaning and value as human beings: we are now things, replaceable pieces of a great machine(the system, the order, the society), and have lost our hability(sensibility) to care about the others. Although the "streets are busy", the humanity is not united, the crowd is speechless, anonymous and meaningless. Humanity is a group of lonely individuals that share disposable or at most superficial relations. We live empty lives (guided by routines, we are always too busy and worried) and dont even care about ours neighbors. If people are dying out there, starving('well, lucky its not me', people may think), we were told(and teached by the system, the historical process, the 'big brother', whatever you call it) to care only about our needs and live passively obeying to this impersonalization thats going on. Expressions like "trains and sewing machines", "busy streets",etc. give us this idea of materialism and massification.
She's(assuming Imogen is the narrator) quite sad about it and questions if the way things turned out were really the best to us, if this whole process was "just what we needed". "You decided it is" that is, people in general dont choose anything, the system chose the "best" for us and we just have to obey to it cause all the governments, the stabilished order and social rules "were here first". (we as individuals didnt choose anything, we are were born naked in a world thats is not 'naked', is rather covered with rules we didnt create and may not agree with, but we have to accept anyway)
The part where she says:
"Oily marks appear on walls
Where pleasure moments hung before"
is quite clear also.
Oil is, with no doubts, the great symbol of this greedy world. The pleasure moments are now just memories. we can only see "insensivity in a still life". The love and human values are put aside in the name of the profits.
The news are not good, we read the headlines with indifference and apathy("we dont care a bit") like if the mess in this world wouldnt affect our lives at all.
And the narrator cant stand this apathy, this lack of feelings.
At the end im not sure if she's saying "oh no you care a bit" ironically, like "ok, i exaggerated when i said you didnt give a shit about the others, you actually care a BIT" or, another possible interpretation, she's giving us hope like "everything is not lost because i see a glimpse of human feeling they (the harshness of this massified and artificial life) couldn't take away from you."

Sorry, it got very long, i dont know if i expressed myself properly(sorry for any grammar mistakes, im not an english native speaker) but if you read the lyrics you'll see this general idea makes a lot of sense.
