Paul McCartney – Jet Lyrics 9 years ago
Paul said it's about his dog, but hey, it's an easy excuse to hide the true meaning of the song which is an insult directed at Bowie. He is revealing bluntly that Bowie is gay. To prove this just watch the wings at the speed of the sound movie concert when they play the song, McCartney makes gay gesture when playing the song. It's about Bowie the major thought as a lady Suffragette city, not so subtle references anyone can pick up. McCartney was used to use songs to reply to Lennon and Harrison and almost anybody he had a feud with. Bowie's reply was much later when he discovered the true meaning of Jet, and it was Let's Dance, starting with the Twist and Shout intro. Let's Dance means let's fight in english slang and the cover is Bowie in boxing gear. The bit of the serious moonlight refers to the moon on this song. Bowie and McCartney were never friends even if they saw each other with Lennon.

David Bowie – Let's Dance Lyrics 9 years ago
you're all wrong, first i don't know why this song is credited to Doc Pomus, it's a Bowie song, unless he did some plagiarism. Let's Dance in english slang means let's fight, hence the cover of Bowie's album of the same name where he is in boxing gear (Bowie was taking boxing lessons). But who is he asking to fight with?..... clue?..... the begining of the song.... yes it is twist and shout.... so he wants to fight the Beatles? why?.... because of Jet.... a 1973 McCartney song that made fun of Bowie about being gay (just look at the speed of sound movie concert in 1976).... " i thought the major was a lady Suffragette ". McCartney met in the 1970s, along Lennon and once McCartney told Bowie his new song was boring and Bowie fled the party, disgusted. So it's not love being the two of them. Only later Bowie found out the true meaning of Jet and was furious. The bit about the radio is to tell McCartney, none of his recent singles made it very far in the top ten. So Let's Dance is Bowie's reply to McCartney's Jet.

Adrian Belew – Pretty Pink Rose Lyrics 9 years ago
This is about the Berlin wall falling off and capitalism going full force into Russia, but capitalism is as bas as communism so nothing's changed really, lyrics by Bowie, music reworked intensively by Belew

David Bowie – Right Lyrics 9 years ago
this is about anal sex, probably with a man, he's on the receiving side as well as the giving side, what we call versatile, but probably more on the receiving side, what we call bottom. The whole song is about the experience of anal sex, how it is pleasurable and confusing. It is also prophetic, talking about coming inside and safe, a thing that will only happen in the 80s with the arrival of HIV and safe sex, he could not know this at that time, he can't also be taken as a drug song disguised as an anal sex song.

Jamiroquai – Canned Heat Lyrics 15 years ago
Dance is a metaphor for sex, you people, it's be done for ages in UK in many many songs, it's a writer's secret, writer 101: when you want to talk about sex you use the word dance or walk, obvious.

Simple Minds – Waterfront Lyrics 16 years ago
i'ts more like a trance then a song, the lyrics are about Glasgow and the harbourfront, the video says it all in fact, it must have had some kind of enlightment going there and made a song about it, it's the periode where their lyrics was not meant to mean anything

The Doors – Shaman's Blues Lyrics 16 years ago
I was almost sure the last And your mind he says And you're MINE. At first level, it's a breakup song, but the last words are really Morrisson at his best (that's why it's in the last verse, it's always the better part of the lyrics). Musically it is my best Doors song, the bass part is amazing (isn't it amazing?) it's haunting in his repetitiveness, and it changes chords in this modern revisited blues style, it has a really fast tempo, hard to play, the keyboards are also really complex and the guitar add a soft touch to it all. It would have gained to have a longer solo à la Light my fire. Optical promise, what that means?

Talking Heads – What a Day That Was Lyrics 16 years ago
In fact, it's not a Talking Heads song, it's a David Byrne song from the Catherine Wheel dance show. But because it's about the start of the Heads without the keyboardist (they were living the three together in the same place) and it was included in the shows, it is known as a Heads song. The Talking Heads version is much sharper and better than the 1981 version with Eno and the likes.

David Byrne – Wicked Little Doll Lyrics 16 years ago
According to some book, this is about the love/hate relationship David had (has?) with former Takling Heads bassist, don't remember her name. Still according to that book, she was always in love with David, but with no return of her love, she married the drummer instead, but was always emotionnally attached to David. Seems the opposite is also true, because he says I will always be in love with you. She is very wicked, there is a long list of bad things she has done to David, just look at how she stares at him in the concert DVD. That's why a reunion of the Heads is out of the question.

Martha and the Muffins – Black Stations/White Stations Lyrics 16 years ago
It's a song by Martha, they were touring the US or something, then they heard there were radio stations refusing to play black music and they were shocked about this, evidently. Nowadays, with all that hip-hop and rap, it's so 1984 in fact to ever think that radio apartheid would last and they were seeing the future when thinking that radio would be black AND white. In fact, today it's mostly black music everywhere, lol.

The Au Pairs – Come Again Lyrics 16 years ago
The sexual meaning is so obvious, since Au Pairs were lesbians (of course not the guy) you have to think of coming as lesbian sex (yes they do come). It's about faking orgasm, but anyone can find some political meaning also, but let's keep it simple, it's about sex.

Talk Talk – Pictures Of Bernadette Lyrics 16 years ago
Well people, help me here, surely it's about a real event in history, maybe something from WWII because we have the "we shall overcome" constanlty on the 12".

Is Bernadette a child, she left only the pictures? took the baby away. It's a tragedy, though, and the music and singing convey it best. Was released outside of a studio album, so it's awkward, don't think it got far on the charts, should have.

Oingo Boingo – Nasty Habits Lyrics 16 years ago
The bits about little boys and girls wouldn't pass the FBI or CIA today, it tells you things like that were going on in 1980 and now you get to prison for many of these nasty habits. I think we are returning to some form of the 1950s. Can't wait for the 80s revival, not happened yet.

That song could have been made by Zappa.

XTC – Down In The Cockpit Lyrics 16 years ago
it's about the feminist movement, and sympathetic to the cause. The Cockpit metaphor could only be thought by Partridge. Of course we're not talking airplanes now. Even if in the cockpit you have control of the plane. The lyrics lacks the spoken part.

XTC – All of a Sudden (It's Too Late) Lyrics 16 years ago
Nothing weird here, that song is exactly about things we missed to do. The time passes, we think we have the time, then we did not do it at the right time, the gate is locked now and it's too late. The you means anyone ourselves.

Curve – I Speak Your Every Word Lyrics 16 years ago
At first glance, she is talking about someone, but what if the you is her, or her inner child or whatever. Or her mother. I speak your every word, meaning she is the same person, so of course she speaks her every word. Could also be a ghost, or a schizophrenic, she hears voices.

Anyway, the music is much more powerful than those lyrics, it's one of my best song of all time.

Curve – Fait Accompli Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it's about AIDS. The background vocals seem to sing FATE in fact i hear AIDS. At first it looks like depression, but when you know they sometimes try to write about two things at the same thing, could well apply to AIDS also. The ball you drag around, AIDS is a ball on the microscope. Written instructions, AIDS gives instructions thru its RNA to copy itself from infected cells. I give it to people, infect. Then there is the phrase it will make you feels good. Well, how can someone explain that about AIDS. Well, in fact, many people who have AIDS develops a new vision to life, and it actually change their life (by force) for the better. Could apply to drugs also. Then, the tile Fait Accompli, which means in french, already done, would mean you have catch AIDS, it's fate, it's a fait accompli. I also heard this song was in a charity about AIDS but it's only a rumour.

Simple Minds – Speed Your Love To Me Lyrics 16 years ago
Maybe it was made in the period where Jim Kerr did lyrics by putting bits of this and that he heard somewhere, with no meanings whatsoever. Just for the sound of it.

But he may also have begun to write political lyrics which will culminate two albums later. It feels like some kind of revolution or maybe it's just a love song. Then again, it can also be about drugs. Almost every artist writes about the drug they take, seems like a powerful inspiration there.

One clue is 24th. Why this date in particular? Or is it her age. Or a street address. The video does not help a lot, as we are in that car riding the highway. Yes, there is definitely speed. Did they use that word in 1983 for the drug?

Moby – Extreme Ways Lyrics 16 years ago
22 replies and nobody saw the obvious (Sigh***)... Usually, a lyricist puts two meaning in a song (maybe more), the first part is one meaning, the 2nd part is another meaning. Here, the 1st part could well be Irak. Then again, it could also be a new sex club opening (extreme ways are back again) or even unsafe sex practice (came along), someone he met on the internet (through it out the windows) like windows XP. Yes a poet like write that, takes unpoetic things like Windows XP and makes it more poetic in a subtle way.

Then the reference to dirty basements (extreme places , never seen any light) sounds really like a sex club, a backroom, even a gay one (the colors of my sea) a reference to the rainbow flag. Did you know Moby is popular in the gay community? Well, it must be for some reason.....I'll let you guess.

But that's the obvious meaning (which nobody saw, anyway...) but the 2nd meaning could well be some anti-war message. But Moby itself talks about indecency in his video, so the sleazy sex club on a basement that opened recently (in London?) where unsafe sex practice takes place even while AIDS is still creeping may be the real meaning. Maybe that's what keeps him writing.

The music is very haunting by the way.
