We Were Promised Jetpacks – With the Benefit of Hindsight Lyrics 13 years ago
The beginning of the chorus is definitely:

I can not predict
future events

but beyond that, it's really rough to make out the lyrics

Moby – Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? Lyrics 15 years ago
Someone once told me a while ago that this song, and even the video, were Moby's interpretation of "the Little Prince". And I kinda see it.
In the video, the main character travels around Earth like he's in search of something he just can't find (an ideal life?). He left with great plans, but everywhere he goes, he realizes that there's not much there for him, and he witnesses things that just break his heart to no end. So in the end, he tries to find a way home.
I dunno, anyone else following me on this?

Moby – Everloving Lyrics 15 years ago
I definitely feel that it is about a particular type of love (like, a significant other, or a mother, for a pet, etc.) or just about love in general.
The only phrase that comes to mine is expansive love. It just feels like a never-ending thing.
And it's beautiful.

Los Campesinos! – Heart Swells/Pacific Daylight Time Lyrics 15 years ago
The whole first half just has this devastating feeling to me. Like he just got back from meeting with this other person, and he's still in some shock and awe about how it's not going to work between them. He gets home, takes off his coat, and then it just all falls apart when it hits him. And it's easy to say that we've all probably felt that feeling of being ruined by another person, because we'll never love someone again, or never find someone that can replace them, etc.
In the second half, it's almost as if he's saying to whatever love he's lost "you were so perfect that everything else around you seems just not right" and we all know that feeling of just wanting to be lost in the moment of a single kiss-especially a last kiss/a kiss goodbye. Talking about flailing his arms seems like he's saying that he's put himself out there so obviously and what he feels for this other person that it almost seems childish, embarrassing--but in the end of it all, he'd never take back a moment of it ("I'd never turn my body clock back")
As for the last two lines, it's interesting. One way to interpret it is that he's hiding something from this other person, whether it be his feelings or something else, but in the end, it's easier to be heartbroken and not go through that agonizing and uplifting moment of telling someone that you love them OR it could be about how he's bitten his tongue so many times about how this other person's hurt him/how they've treated him, and in the end, saying them wouldn't help the situation.

I need to stop listening to this. It's just heartbreaking.

Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain Lyrics 16 years ago
The first time I heard this song, it just broke my heart. And every person I have ever gotten to listen to it has said the same.

About the chorus, the way I had always looked at it was that he was saying that he got through parts of his life by taking the most difficult path possible, hence "sons are like birds, flying upwards over the mountain".
The thought came to me when I was thinking about birds migrating, and I thought about what would happen if they encountered mountains, and I said to myself, they'd probably go in between them rather than travel upwards to the top.
I don't know, just a thought.

Sufjan Stevens – Holland Lyrics 16 years ago
The details to this song just give it so much more. Like, I love the way you can hear birds chirpping very quietly in the background in certain parts.

Sufjan Stevens – The Seer's Tower Lyrics 16 years ago
Just as a side note, possible double meaning in the lines:
"oh my mother, she betrayed us, but my father loved and bathed us"

When he was 5 years old, Steven's mom abandoned his family, and his father was left to raise the kids alone. I'm not saying that the Mother Earth/Heavenly Father analogy is wrong, just that he might be hitting two subjects with the lines.

Sufjan Stevens – Romulus Lyrics 16 years ago
Romulus is a city in Michigan, I believe somewhat south of Detroit? (and Godzuki, I wouldn't worry about sounding too ignorgant...I'm not sure how many Americans actually know this...) Sufjan was born in Detroit, and it wouldn't come as a shock to me if Romulus was a town he spent some time growing up in, possibly with his grandfather? Just a thought.
Anyways, This song hurts so much that it's good.
The line about his grandfather buying the VCR is absolutely painful, because you can just imagine this little kid with his siblings sitting in front of the TV, waiting daily for just year after year for their mom to come home.
And the last verse is truly brilliant, because you feel this pain for the kids, who are so distanced from their own mother that they don't even know who she is and possibly one of the only people who truly raised these kids just died. But you feel a certain pang in your heart for the mother, too, who smokes while she dyes her hair the same reason the kids had the VCR. To distract themselves from the overwhelming pain that they felt.
And I agree with the previous post about how there's just this moment of happiness and ectasy when he talks about touching his mother's hair-just to have her their was enough.
Overall, may be one of my favorite songs of his, and even favorite songs ever.

Sufjan Stevens – John Wayne Gacy, Jr. Lyrics 16 years ago
I get shivers every single time I hear him sing "oh my god". It just seems to encompass every single shred of horror that I imagine Gacy's friends, family, and neighbors felt when they realized what he had done.
I've read up a lot on Gacy, and from what I can tell you, this song just seems to say it all. Because even though the murders themselves were horrific, and the sheer number of murders is terrifying, it's the idea that the same man who was considered a family man, a social person, a person who gave so much to his community, is the same person who committed these crimes.
Absolutely chilling and beautiful.
