John Mayer – Who Says Lyrics | 7 years ago |
This song for me all comes together in the last verse with the line "it's been a long time since 22". Im 25 now and that line hits me like a ton of bricks because when you're 22 you're still young enough to get stoned and sort of do what you want, young enough to not have your life figured out and it still be ok. John talks a lot about time and aging and growing up in a ton of his songs, like "can't stop this train" and even on his new album "changing" where he feels like a kid still running around when most people his age are settled down and partnered off. To me, this song is all about nostalgia; i dont know exactly when room for squares came out or how old he was but this song seems like it would go perfectly on that album. The whole thing about the girls is a reference to his resistance to making a real connection with one person, thats why he'd rather be carefree, get stoned, "call up a girl that I used to know, make love for an hour or so" and meet all the girls in the county line. Its not about him wanting to come off as a player i dont think, just the idea that he's so in the moment with any girl that they're all great and interchangeable to him, he's waiting on fate to tell him who his soul mate is and in the meantime he's just gonna keep doing what he's doing even if it may seem immature or irresponsible because like someone said earlier, it makes him happy. at least temporarily |
Andrew McMahon – Synesthesia Lyrics | 11 years ago |
I've always been a huge Andrew McMahon fan, and I'm so happy I got to see this performed a few weeks ago. Although it's stylistically a bit different from JM, the quality of the lyrics is equally incredible I saw pictures from the space shuttle North America at night I could almost see my house I could almost see the rest of my life Now my mothers in the hospital And my friends are in the news Collecting trophies for the songs they wrote When we lived in the shadow of the moon This first section seems to be a reflection about time and space. He uses every tense, reflecting on where he and everyone he loves are in past, present, and future. I noticed he uses a lot of the same metaphors in many of his songs, like references to space and airplanes. Pictures from a space shuttle are removed and only capture moments. Living in the shadow of the moon is a reminder that for most people; all the emotion of their accomplishments and trials are dwarfed when taken from the context of a larger world. And I have never been to mars But I’ve traveled ’round this world Shooting fireworks at falling stars No prison bars And my fathers got a decent job I hear he’s finally pulling through There’s more to life than singing songs we write When we are in the shadow of the moon This verse seems like a very modest way of summing up his experience, but a line like "shooting fireworks at falling stars" connotes a power to add color to the scenery and affect a visible change. (reminds me of "down"). Saying there's more to life than the songs he writes (that most either won't hear or understand) is a foreshadowing of the next verses adding more to the equation with being in love. It doesn’t matter if you’re invisible to everyone else as long as there’s someone who can appreciate the emotions of your experience. I see colors When I hear your voice Grab your wings they’re putting gravity on trial I see colors I don’t hear the noise Because we’re only flying for a while Because we’re only flying for a while The idea of synesthesia, or hearing color in this case is a phenomena often associated with the use of psychedelics. My first DMT experience especially comes to mind, where the whole world came at me in this rainbow wave of soothing energy, assuring me that all the work I had done trying to find myself had led me right to this perfect moment. It's something very powerful, but I feel like Andrew captures it quite well with the emotion he puts into the chorus. Flying for a while is a reminder that life is temporary, a point emphasized repeatedly on “People and Things”, but the fleetingness shouldn't deter leaping for that ultimate sensation. I saw a picture of my niece Twisting high above a narrow beam And my brother looked so proud Like he woke up in this perfect dream And I’ve know you all my life But I knew you long before that too Lets go dancing to the songs we wrote When we lived in the shadow of the moon The first line about his brother living vicariously through his child's success makes a poignant point; like there’s this stage in your life where you're no longer dreaming and have finally settled down. The image of his niece flying above a beam is beautiful to me because it’s another picture, frozen in time; her youth and her grace and her momentary inability to fall. It seems like Andrew and friends are still celebrating the moment of their own success, which is an interesting contrast. I see colors When I hear your voice Grab your wings They’re putting gravity on trial I see colors I don’t hear the noise Sometimes you’re only flying for a while I could love you In the falling rain Grab your wings This is a storm we’re meant to ride Like Synesthesia Aboard a stalling plane It’s like we’re only flying for a while Riding in a storm reminds me of "hurricane", aboard a stalling plane is just like "bruised", and falling rain immediately brings to mind "kill the messenger". I love that only someone who knew his lyrics inside out would notice these trends, so he feels safe recycling and reinventing these old ideas behind the shadow of the moon with no spot light. I see colors When I hear your voice Grab your wings They’re putting gravity on trial I see colors I don’t fear the choice Because we’re only flying for a while And I could love you In the falling rain Grab your wings This is the storm we’re meant to ride Like Synesthesia Aboard a stalling plane Sometimes we’re only flying for a while The idea of not fearing choice is a strong implication that he has at least a few things about life figured out. Endings are not to be feared and falling from the air is essential to learning. We move through all these stages of life shielded from the view of all but those closest. Tracing out the colors of the most beautiful experience requires kinds of magic like flying and synesthesia, but it's the perceived impossibility that makes it all the more resonant. I can see the colors running When I hear the music play |
Natalie Brown – In Your Arms Again Lyrics | 14 years ago |
cross my heart is great but you should get brat pack by the rocket summer too! |
Tom Waits – A Little Rain (For Clyde) Lyrics | 14 years ago |
thank you so much for reading. I really appreciate it |
The Black Eyed Peas – Imma Be Lyrics | 14 years ago |
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha |
Kelly Family,The – Rock'n'roll Stole My Soul Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i agree with you completely. I always wish my friends could see how pointless conflict is. It sucks needing people, even though they alwayse let you down |
Something Corporate – Watch the Sky Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Any comment I have to make about the meaning would just be redundant, but this song is too incredible not to say anything at all. Today is a good day. All it is is somehting to believe in |
She & Him – Why Do You Let Me Stay Here? Lyrics | 14 years ago |
it is pretty cute, I like Zooey's voice alot. But anyway, basically she's just kind of chilling waiting for him to approach her and ask her out cuz she thinks they'd hti it off! |
Lily Allen – Fuck You Lyrics | 14 years ago |
okay i'm kind of missing the profound...i get that she has balls for just being like fuck you, but come on. What kind of message is that? if she wants to make a political statement she might actually want to make specific points to have a valid argument |
Ricky Martin – She Bangs Lyrics | 14 years ago |
haha wow for a fairly pointless lalala dance kind of song the lyrics are pretty decent. I mean she looks like a flower but she stings like a bee? daimond map to the stars? that's pretty freaking clever. Good job Ricky Martin! |
Ludo – Mutiny Below Lyrics | 14 years ago |
well the mutiny kind of has to be his dick in this case because that's what makes it "below" as in "below the belt" |
Bright Eyes – We Are Nowhere and It's Now Lyrics | 14 years ago |
okay this is probably completely wrong but the yellow bird immediately made me think of the poem "hope is the thing with featheres" by emily dickenson. The whole poem uses the metaphysical idea of a bird in your soul as a symbol for hope. It makes sense! |
Zero 7 – In The Waiting Line Lyrics | 14 years ago |
thank you |
Rent – What You Own Lyrics | 14 years ago |
definitely one of the top songs in the show. I agree with penny fresca. see the movie/ play if you haven't yet! |
J-Kwon – You & Me Lyrics | 14 years ago |
wow this song is kind of fucked up...j kwon seems like a pretty rough guy. it's like he's trying to be all cut like oh we were so young and innocent, but then it just turns into her ass and sex and being pissed about child support...not sure if i see how meant to be they are |
Blink-182 – Feeling This Lyrics | 14 years ago |
this is such a classic summer song. Basically, i see it is this guy and girl have a summer thing and it's mostly just sex but as soon as she leaves he realizes that he actually kind of loves her |
Noise Ratchet – Crush Lyrics | 14 years ago |
haha they did such a great job on this cover! Reminds me of the 90s whne mandy was singing it big time. loveeeee |
LL Cool J – Control Myself Lyrics | 14 years ago |
haha this song is so funny. i never realized he was trying to get her to cheat on her bf. the tune is also pretty catchy and j lo's spanish is hott. But yea in a nutshell, cool j wants this chick with a bf who is being just a total tease |
Rihanna – If It's Lovin' That You Want Lyrics | 14 years ago |
fun song...she wants to be with this dude cuz she thinks they'd really hit it off. aww |
The Pussycat Dolls – I Don't Need A Man Lyrics | 14 years ago |
okay not the deepest song ever, but nice mnessage. They're all independent chicks and can buy their own shit and what not. my favorite part is the get off doing my thing line cuz i take it to be quite literal lol |
Dave Matthews Band – Spaceman Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song reminds me of "what i got" by sublime. It's basically about how life is always ordinary with expected ups and downs but he loves this girl so it all works out |
Rob Thomas – Years From Now Lyrics | 15 years ago |
eventually, you're not going to have all the opportunities you have right now, and someday you'll regret not taking chances. if you walk away when it's easy, you'll definitely walk when it;s hard |
Rob Thomas – Getting Late Lyrics | 15 years ago |
time keeps passing, no matter what you do with your life. you just keep keeping on and hope you get a few good moments out of the whole ride |
Rob Thomas – Cradlesong Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i can see why this is the title track, this song is awesome. i think it's about how everyboody is a victim these days and the way we give away our stories so we can have proof of existing. The craddlesong is that he's saving this girl from being ordinary, he doesn't want empathy from the rest of the world |
Rob Thomas – Wonderful Lyrics | 15 years ago |
putting up a front so you can have pretend happy because it's better than nothing. inside he feels like hell because he's just being what everyone else wants and he has no sense of who he really is |
Rob Thomas – Snowblind Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it's about being stuck in a rut, where you feel like everything's endless. in this case, though, it doesn't seem like such a bad thing because atleast he has someone to love |
Rob Thomas – Hard On You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
he loves her so much that he puts her up on a pedastool so basically he's bound to be let down. He's only hard on her because he knows she can do better and he wants her to know it's all with good intentions |
Rob Thomas – Fire On The Mountain Lyrics | 15 years ago |
the world is changing, not all progress is good. he's scared of being left behind, "the future's getting further" that everything will got o shit and he'll be the only one to notice |
Rob Thomas – Real World '09 Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it's supposed to be just like a feel good jam. life's hard, but we all gotta do it, that's just how things work |
Rob Thomas – Mockingbird Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i think this song is about being afraid of love. She won;t comitt, so he doesn't want to be the only one to fall. he's also commenting on how everybody else seems to be smiling, so he's trying to figure out why they can't be happy too |
Rob Thomas – Someday Lyrics | 15 years ago |
it's a song about hope...even if right now you feel lost and scared, someday it's bound to get better |
Rob Thomas – Give Me The Meltdown Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i like this one! I'm guessing the meltdown is like this girls breaking point...basically she just goes about her life pretending everything's fine and that she needs no one "You so perfect that you never really need nobody" but then all her secret problems come out to this one guy who is a good friend and just listens |
Rob Thomas – Gasoline Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i think this song is about living in the middle, so you can't win but you can't lose either. The girl he is singing to just rationalizes everything "You adjust your reason Until you see the light from where you are" so that she seems happy but really she's just complacent. He tried to help her find something better, but it was too fleeting, hence "it burned like gasoline" |
Eminem – We Made You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
aw he makes fun of brett michaels in the music video! That's so sad, rock of love and poison kicks ass! Addmittedly though, i can see why one might mock a reality tv star/ ex glam rocker. This song is very witty and catchy...great single |
Something Corporate – Cavanaugh Park Lyrics | 15 years ago |
this song is amazing. It's one of the few soco songs with lyrics that are very straight forward-no trying to interpret exactly what the lyrics mean. The way it's written is very relatable, i think everyone gets the sense of viewing their own life the same way. basically, it's just taking a very honest look at growing up |
Blood On The Dance Floor – Blood on the Dance Floor Lyrics | 15 years ago |
omg. is it completely horible that i think this is just like the funniest shit ever? haha it's so degrading and awful but i love it! |
Rent – Will I? Lyrics | 15 years ago |
definitely a tear jerker...it's amazing how such a simple verse can be so moving. It's all about just fear of the future and dying; no one wants to be forgotten |
Paramore – For a Pessimist, I'm Pretty Optimistic Lyrics | 15 years ago |
favorite paramore song. Basically, i think the guy just keeps blaming her for everything and pretending he's above it...now she's totally calling him out and saying she won't take anymore |
Attack Attack! (USA) – I Kissed A Girl (cover) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
ah kick ass cover! yay punk goes pop :) |
30h!3 – I Can't Do It Alone Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i can't really figure this song out, even though it's pretty awesome... my guess is that it's about more than just one thing, like an all enclusive party scene anthem he sees this girl all fucked up, he doesn't know her, doesn't love her he's out partying, challenging every chick who gets up in his face he realizes everyone is so empty, but it's not really his fault he's here it's not like he can do it alone, meaning he's being enabled by the scene |
Rob Thomas – Ever the Same Lyrics | 15 years ago |
a very beautifully written song. i see it as trusting someone else to see you at your worst...kind of like a "if we're going down, let's go down together" thing. nice message |
Coldplay – Yellow Lyrics | 15 years ago |
i don't know, definitely lots of different ways to look at this one. I see more of a love song angle, kind of like the girl is a bit screwed up w/ drugs, eating diorder, depression, whatever else you guys mentioned. And then her boyfriend is just like hey, i think you're really beautiful and i'd do anything for you...you're as a bright as a star. i take the yellow to mean a more human affected version of gold...bright, but not perfect |
3OH!3 – Dance with Me Lyrics | 15 years ago |
omg so fucking clever...we wear plaid after labor day and still ger ass. haha these guys are the shit...that's why they can just say whatever they want and get away with it :) |
Harvey Danger – Flagpole Sitta Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I'm not sure if this is related but in the 1920s flagpole sitting was a big fad for people who wanted to seperate themselves from society. People would just climb up and chill there for like a week..i kid you not. Maybe that has some relation to the title? |
Fall Out Boy – America's Suitehearts Lyrics | 15 years ago |
yay i song i could actually make sense out of on this album! I definitely agree that it has nothing to do with pete's own life, other than his take on pop culture. To me, america's suitehearts represent not only celebs who whore themselves out to the media, but also no-name teenage girls who are doing the same thing to make it big. By saying suitehearts vs sweet hearts, i get the image of pretty naive girls doing scandalous things (aka sex tapes, etc) in hotel rooms. It's very sarcastic, but it works really well. good job fall out boy! |
Mario – Let Me Love You Lyrics | 15 years ago |
as far as r&b goes, this song is pretty good. Mario has a good voice, plus all his lyrics actually make sense! It kind of bothers me that this is the exact same song as "gallery" but this came first i guess so props to mario |
Usher – You Make Me Wanna Lyrics | 15 years ago |
kind of basic lyrics, but usher has a pretty sexy voice so i don't mind. at least there's a sentiment behind the song other than scoring |
The Goo Goo Dolls – Black Balloon Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I love this song! I'm definitely going to have to agree with everyone who siad this song is about heroin, if something is both a hole in her life and making her fly, it's definitely drugs. i see this song being about how he let this girl get really close to him and tried to help her over come her issues. In the end, though, he had to leave her because she wasn't strong enough to quit and he couldn't stand to watch her ruin her life |
Hollywood Undead – Everywhere I Go Lyrics | 15 years ago |
omg. so inappropriate but i'm in love..."and i'll punk the pussy like I'm ashton Kutcher" can you get more clever? AMAZING! |
Jewel – Hands Lyrics | 15 years ago |
definitely my favorite on this album. I think this song is about how instead of just sitting around bemoaning the state of the world, we should stand up and fight for what we beleive in. No matter how small of a difference you make, your actions are the one thing you are responsible for |
