Lana Del Rey – Video Games Lyrics 12 years ago
@anicechianti ... I absolutely agree about the "father" angle. Of course she isn't going to come out and say "it's about my dad molesting me." But the opening line "swinging in the backyard" is so evocative of childhood, it's almost like "what else could she be talking about!?" If not her dad, then maybe an older boy that molested her while she was still pubescent.

She wrote a song earlier in her career called PUT ME IN A MOVIE that talks about, again, making a movie "video game" with a man she meets. "If he likes me and takes me home, Lights, Camera, Action!" and it goes on to say "You know you like little girls, you can be my daddy."

Something VERY dark has happened to this girl!

"lick me up!?" no, I think it's "PICK me up and take me like a vitamin." I don't recall ever licking my vitamins before I took them...

A Fine Frenzy – Silent War Lyrics 14 years ago
I couldn't make out the part about what her heart speaks (sounded like "puddle-leaps" which makes no sense to me) nor the bit about how he razed her with the sound of shaming!? Just did the best I could, but I would welcome any alternate takes?

A Fine Frenzy – Blow Away Lyrics 14 years ago
I see in this song that she is in a relationship with someone who wants to keep things "come and go" as he wants, but she wants to take it more seriously. I think she's expressing that being with a guy like that is a waste of time - the time spent just gets sucked into space never to return - it just blows away - there's no substance.

I believe the correct line is:

"with a heart full of MYTH and lore"

makes more sense, I think.

Regina Spektor – Baby Jesus Lyrics 16 years ago
I haven't actually heard her sing it, so I can't be sure of the tone, but I find it to be a mix of anger and mocking at the attitude of Christianity that it is Jesus or hell. I can understand that a non-believer would be annoyed at the attitude, if and when it exists. So, in a sense, as a Christian I'm not bothered by the bulk of the song. I think she expresses an understandable fear of what some zealot might do to her in the name of his god. I'm sure any culture where religious zealots rule has its share of terrified non-believers (see also the Middle East, where unbelief gets you executed).

The only line that offends me is "they said, all the non-believers they get to eat dirt
and the believers get to spit on their graves...
believe!..."

I know there are morons out there who send out this kind of signal - but I can tell you the attitude of the Bible toward the unbeliever is ANYTHING but "spit on their grave." The attitude is one of great sadness for the lost - be offended if you like, but do not accuse us of hate.

Oh yeah, I still love you, Regina - and I respect your honest sentiment here - you can only be who you are, and better to be who you are than to fake it!

Abra Moore – Family Affair Lyrics 16 years ago
Now I feel stupid - I've read that this song was written regarding her relationship with her step-mother in the time dealing with her father's death.

I guess not everything is a sappy love song.

It brings tears to the eyes, nevertheless!

Abra Moore – Family Affair Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't know why - I can't listen to this sone without tears running down my cheek. I think it is the way her voice almost breaks when she sings:

"don't take it away from me
don't take away the one love that matters"

When you listen to the album, the next song is "Pull Away" - both songs are Abra's appeal to her lover to stay and fight for their relationship.

The next song is "The End" in which we see that, inevitably, the relationship ended.

Yes, this is THE go to album for post break-up therapy! If you aren't in tears by the time you get through "The End," then you've never busted up with anyone you truly loved!

Corinna Fugate – Living Room Lyrics 16 years ago
On the Snow White CD, this song is immediately preceded by the song "I'm Still Here," which makes a good introduction to "Living Room" because in it, the album shifts focus from Corinna's painful laments, mostly about Heath, to the actual perspective of Heath, reassuring Corinna that he is still here with her, which then leads into "Living Room" in which Heath describes returning in spirit to this world he left behind to see what is transpiring. wishing he could hold her again.

Regina Spektor – Reading Time with Pickle Lyrics 16 years ago
Ummm . . . I thought it was pretty obvious that the pickle is her, ummm, "happy time" friend in the bath room, if you know what I'm saying? You know - her substitute for a man, sexually?

Regina Spektor – Après Moi Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm surprised no one caught the Methuselah reference. Whether Regina had this in mind, or whoever originally uttered the phrase, "After me comes the flood" is a literal reference to the Biblical character of Methuselah, who is regarded as both the longest living person and the last person to die before the Biblical flood came. His name is thought to literally mean "when he dies/died, it will be sent/has been sent."

It is taught, in light of this, that Methuselah's long life is a sign of God's patience, knowing He would bring the flood after Methuselah died, then granting him nearly 1,000 years of life.

Placed in the context of THIS song, I think the protagonist is speaking of personal responsibility - "When I die, all that depends on me will fall, so I must stand as long as I can - I cannot live for my own needs, but must look to the needs of those who depend on me."

Corinna Fugate – Undertow Lyrics 16 years ago
Saying a Fugate song is about depression and suicide is like saying the Pope is Catholic - in other words, its a safe bet!

I think in this case, it is about the strong urge to end her life, yet in then end "Ophelia just missed her," and she is both relieved AND upset at the same time.

A Fine Frenzy – Whisper Lyrics 16 years ago
Based on several other songs on this album, I'd have to say this is another reference to her trying to get over her attachment to a lost love, and that she wants her current love to be patient just a little while longer - because while this process has been like running a maze like a rat in a cage, her cries of anguish are getting quieter and quieter, and are in fact, right now, down to a whisper. And soon the past love will be like nothing but a daydream she once had.

A Fine Frenzy – Think of You Lyrics 16 years ago
Here we see another hint that Sudol agonized over a former love. She was obviously quite close to him. At the time of the writing of this song, he seems to have moved on to another relationship (and even started a family?) while Sudol is still reflecting on the good times as a way to get through her own bad times.

You guys nailed it pretty much - I can relate myself. When I met my wife in college, I had just come out of my first serious relationship. And while my wife was INFINITELY better than my previous girlfriend, even so I had alot of baggage to unpack before I was ready to totally commit myself to her.

Sudol is a true wordsmith!

A Fine Frenzy – Lifesize Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't know - I tend to think she is speaking more about the power "we" can have as a connected people. If people could put aside their differences and start to look toward helping the others of the world, there is no limit to what we could achieve for the good of the world - and others would start to see us as "larger than life" in terms of how far we go to help others.

A Fine Frenzy – Hope for the Hopeless Lyrics 16 years ago
She is so positive! How refreshing, these days. This song says - "yes, you are suffering - we all do and will. Even so, you pick up and keep moving and you get through it in the end." Well said!

A Fine Frenzy – Borrowed Time Lyrics 16 years ago
Sudol seems to have a running theme on this album about not just sitting down and letting life pass you by, but getting up and getting out there and taking risks. To me, this song is about not dwelling in fear of the end of your life, even if it is close. Get out there, use that borrowed time to life! LIVE LIFE AND STOP JUST "WAITING TO DIE." So many people live a life of mundacity - get up, go to work, come home, watch TV, go to bed . . . repeat. Sudol says, "Get out there and live! Don't waste your life!"

A Fine Frenzy – Come On, Come Out Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about living life! She says get out there and see the beauty of the world, because if you stay inside it will just pass you by. This is applicable to alot of kids today who are raised in front of the TV and Computer when they should be outside playing and enjoying the fresh air of life. But it also applies to people who find it easier to stay home alone rather than getting out to be with other people, even though going it is risking getting hurt by someone or something.

I gotta tell you - reading Sudol's lyrics, I just think she is BRILLIANT! This is not a collection of dopey love songs. She really has some neat things to say!

A Fine Frenzy – The Minnow and the Trout Lyrics 16 years ago
While obvious, the use of allegory is very nice. Though we are raised to be sworn enemies, if we can just understand that we all come from the same source (and will one day all return to that same source) then maybe we could get over our differences and start helping each other out!

A Fine Frenzy – Last of Days Lyrics 16 years ago
Again, I see undertones of the Christ story. Jesus died and rose to heaven on a cloud, leaving the world to go on without His physical presence. And we wait until the last days for Him to return again.

A Fine Frenzy – You Picked Me Lyrics 16 years ago
As a Christian, I relate this to how Christ lifted me out of my sin and saved my soul. An apple high on a tree is difficult to get to, and can almost be said to be trying to stay out of reach. Few would go to the effort to climb up high to get it, yet He did. A shell blends into the sand trying not to be found - even so, He found me and lifted me up before the waves could take me out to sea.

And He is a fisher of men, so to speak.

Maybe a stretch, but its how I feel about Jesus.
