A fun note by the band about this song: Written in Northampton, MA as the result of a lyrical brainstorming exercise, before the band had formed. In the end, Dave and Auyon convinced Don that being in a band would be pretty fun, and Don convinced Dave and Auyon that he was pretty weird.

In the song "Hold On" Denison makes a reference to Book of My Nights by Li-Young Lee. "Everything but sleep" is a line in the first poem from that book, so maybe that poem inspired him to write this song (or the title, at least).
