Sting – Fortress Around Your Heart Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is about revisiting the past, and more specifically the break up with his first wife.

I believe the following lines specificaly refer to the bi-polar disorder he suffered during the time when the Police and his wife were breaking up.

"Then I went off to fight some battle
That I'd invented inside my head"

Bi-polar disorder often feels like a conflict, one minute you are down, giving up, the next irritable, and explosive. In truth, these conflicts are present all the time in a bi-polar person, and at times they can manifest at the same instant.

deadmau5 – Cthulhu Sleeps Lyrics 13 years ago
Cthulhu Sleeps is honestly one of the songs on 4x4=12 with a lot of meaning behind it. There are a lot of postings out on the net that seem to indicate that this song came from incident where Deadmau5 had passed out on state during a late summer tour, and ended up cancelling part of it. In an interview in DJ Mag Top 100 issue, he had this to say about the incident.

“I had an epiphany… Cthulhu called. Nobody was home, completely flayed my mind… couldn’t take it. Passed out.”

There is a moment in the song where it speeds up extremely fast, then slows and becomes somewhat somber and dark. I think this might be indicative of what happend during the incident. He was touring, frantically and it all just kind of caught up with him and things went dark. I am just glad he didn't get hurt :)

deadmau5 – Strobe Lyrics 13 years ago
With a lot of Deadmau5 tunes, there are no lyics, so meaning it tough to discern.

As for this song, the begining to is slow, peaceful, and somber. I can't help but feel that he was writing this for Meowingtons. Of course, it progresses, and builds up to a huge eargasmic finish! Got to love that feel good beat.

deadmau5 – Sometimes Things Get, Whatever Lyrics 13 years ago
The more I listen to Deadmau5, the more I come to believe the there really isn't much in the way of "meaning" behind it. It's just move your a$$ and dance feel good music, and we really need more of that in this day and age.

As for the meaning behind this song, if there is one. I would say it's either about a relation ship, or the ramblings about technical issues experienced while trying connect his musical gear. He is a self admitted gear head, so it wouldn't supprise me.

Depeche Mode – Enjoy The Silence Lyrics 16 years ago
I have been a Depeche Mode fan since the first time I hard songs from there Music for the Masses album. I think when they look back on this band, this song will always be the song that is synonymous with the band, it’s their definitive song. It’s as good to listen to today as the first time I heard it, and is timeless in it’s truest sense of the word.

Having read all the interpretations on this site, viewing the music video repeatedly, I think that the overall theme of this song, at it’s highest level, is one of escapism. Escapism is a mental diversion by which to relieve oneself of the perceived unpleasant aspects of daily stress.

This claim we be illustrated against both the interpretations of a drug induced stupor, deep romantic involvement, as well as symbolism within the music video, which I will explore further. I do realize that is often not good to explore music video symbolism with actual song meanings, but since the crowned king/prince symbol is closely tied to this song in the video as well as during concert performances; I feel that this is significant to the meaning and should be explored.

Lets break down the inner meanings of the word silence first. It could mean a quiet moment (who’s counter point would be chaos), or it could mean the act of not expressing, as an act of preserving.

The song begins with the first stanza:

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Can't you understand
Oh my little girl

Simply stated, he is speaking of a chaotic point of violence in the world around him, that it is painful. And there is a need to have an escape. If you follow the romantic relationship interpretation, it is him pressing his need to be in a quiet moment with his loved one to escape. If you follow the drug interpretation, it is his confession to his naive “little girl” that he needs an injection to escape. And if you follow the music video symbolism of a crowned king/prince (often a literary symbol of privilege, authority, higher spiritual state, or superego), then he is explaining the desire to flee the bickering of his court to his “little girl” princess.

The main chorus continues and is repeated:

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Here is where interpretations of the song’s meaning diverge a bit, but at a high level, essentially have the same meaning. If you follow the romantic relationship interpretation, he is confessing that his love for his “little girl” is his escape, and that why worry a perfect moment with imperfect words. If you follow the drug interpretation, he is confessing that all he needs is the drugs running “in my arms” and that words would only take him way from his high. And if you follow the symbolism of the video, then his escape is being way from his court and using the chair in his “arms” to enjoy the silence and actually enjoy his kingdom or “little world” or just his daily journey through life. There is also an underlying desire to stay away from expression, as “words are very unnecessary, they can only do harm”

The second stanza before the main chorus is repeated:

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

Again divergence in interpretation, but the higher meaning is the same. If you follow the romantic relationship interpretation, he saying, why make vows, they can be broken, let’s just enjoy the feelings, the pleasures and even the pains the relationship brings without words. This reinforces the “in my arms” escape. In you follow the drug interpretation, it’s breaking of a vow because feelings are so intense for the drug, though gives pleasure, it doesn’t remove the pain it was meant to quell, and the stupor of the high makes words meaningless and forgettable. And finally, for the folks following the music video symbolism, vows and promises are often made in a position of privilege, but no matter how you try to escape, “pleasures remain, so does the pain” and hence you can never have a moment of escape last.

So hopefully I have illustrated that now matter how you try to interpret this song, it is ultimately about escapism. How everyone needs it, how good it feels, and ultimately how it is only temporary. Enjoy the Silence :)

Men at Work – It's A Mistake Lyrics 16 years ago
I also think the song is about Vietnam. The war was set off by a lot of speculative pretenses, namely around the Gulf of Tonkin incident. I also think it draws on how the military hawks wanted to fight, despite the unpopular views on it.

The Police – Message In A Bottle Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, the theme of this song is one of journey. It is about what we go thru as we live life as single indivuduals.

If you read the begining lyrics, the narrator portrays himself as a 'cast away' and 'lost" Clearly he doesn't like his situation, and that it is more "than any man can bear, rescue me" He says before he falls into despair, but the truth is he already feels in a state of despair, else he wouldn't send an "SOS to the world." I think everyone feels this way when they live as a single individual for the first time, alone, deserted, and a even little desparate.

So he sends out his "SOS" or "message in the bottle" Now the question is why is the SOS in a bottle? Why is he not making a large blazing signal fire, or firing off signal flares? Perhaps this means that although people want to be found, loved, accepted, they also want to protect themselves and the messages they send out. The literal is protecting your message from the sea, but the symbolic may mean being shy and protective from danger in the outside world, or even a fear of expression. The actually message itself inside the bottle or SOS is most likely expressions of love and romance that we all want to be realized ultimately.

In the second stanza, you know that some time has passed, "a year" The next line, "I should have known this right from the start" What should he have known? It is that love is not so easy to find, and that you need to remain hopeful, as "hope can keep me together" On that same note, he has come to realize that although love could be a very good thing, it could also hurt him. That is a keep realization that ultimately turns people from being hopeless singles to realistic singles, that there is good and bad to finding someone.

An now finally for the finale of the song, the last stanza, and my most favorate. He wakes up one morning, and sees how many people out there sending the same "SOS", the same message in the bottle. "It seems I am not alone at being alone" is basically the narator completing his journey, not that he has actually found anyone to rescue him from despair, but that he has realized everyone has felt alone and isolated, and life will go on and that is ok. In the end of the song he still ends his "SOS" but he also realizes that nobody may ever find it among the billions of other messages out there, and he may never find his home, or true place in the world to share.

All in all, a masterful work. One of the reasons I am a fan of the Police and many of the new age bands, always a deeper meaning than just what is in the lyrics.
