Stars – We Don't Want Your Body Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Ignore my last comment (and how I accidentally scored myself -1 trying to delete it)... I also hear "sold me some cheap ecstasy." |
Stars – We Don't Want Your Body Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I've been hearing "sultry ecstasy" lately. Of course, there's an official lyric book to confirm what's right/wrong, if someone owns it. |
Autolux – Blanket Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The line, "I black out, straightjacket fun," is missing (after "Down into the sun"). |
Metric – Sick Muse Lyrics | 14 years ago |
*This would also make sense with Metric's decision to release Fantasies on their own label and Emily's admission that she considered giving up music. |
Metric – Sick Muse Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I always assumed this song was about how money-driven the music industry is and the pressures it can create for artists. The message is straightforward--money is a "sick muse" and shouldn't serve as an inspiration or motivator. The song could be entirely observational, but the lyric, "Cupid stuck me with a sickness / Pull your little arrows out and let me live my life," suggests that the speaker (possibly the band) was temporarily ruled by money and now wants to reclaim agency over life and artistic pursuits. Lines such as "I'll write you harmony in C" and "Everybody just wanna play the lead" could refer to pandering to the higher-ups and measuring success by industry standards. |
Jason Collett – Fire Lyrics | 14 years ago |
(despite what the video may suggest.) |
Jason Collett – Fire Lyrics | 14 years ago |
amy millan, not emily haines. |
Jason Collett – Out of Time Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i always thought it was "i'm gonna hit rock bottom." i don't own the physical album (and thus don't know if the lyrics are printed in the booklet), so i could be wrong. |
Stars – Undertow Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I always thought it was, "All the winds that you rise that you rise that you rise...." |
Stars – Division Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Have they ever released the actual lyrics to this? I always assumed the chorus was something akin to, "Tumble through the flowers / Coming out at the seeds / But for always, for always/ It's you that I see(k)." |
St. Vincent – Actor Out of Work Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I believe it's, "you're the laughter, you're the obscene." As for the other missing line(s), it sounds like, "you're a cast___ looking on;" I'm wondering if it's jargon related to film casting. I also think "I am love" might simply be a strange pronunciation of "i-in love," based on her mouth in the music video. Anyhow, I think the song is about being in love with someone, but realizing it's unhealthy and inadvisable ("I think I'm mad"). The person feels somehow comforted by the relationship ("you're a supplement, you're a salve / you're a bandage"), but knows the other person is dishonest and hiding something ("actor out of work," "brass knuckles underneath"). |
Neko Case – Middle Cyclone Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This has already become one of my favorite Neko songs. Ignoring the subject/pronoun disagreement that will fill the rest of this comment.... I think it's about someone who is in love, but cannot or will not make themselves vulnerable. They can't make themselves let down their wall and clearly can't choose to not be in love, so they feel helpless, foolish and, worst of all, responsible for their anxiety because they are hindering themselves by keeping quiet. That's just my take. |
Kaisercartel – Okay Lyrics | 15 years ago |
these lyrics might be from the demo version, but the march forth version has: "this still silence" >>> "distilled silence" "it's okay if all our answers are wrong" >>> "it's okay if all right turns to wrong" |
Neko Case – Vengeance is Sleeping Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I believe it's also "the hours that grind your life to dust." |
Neko Case – Vengeance is Sleeping Lyrics | 15 years ago |
damn-bam = "damp and" |
Neko Case – Pretty Girls Lyrics | 15 years ago |
(sorry, i didn't see the larger comment box at the bottom of the page; that wasn't meant as a direct reply to your comment.) |
Neko Case – Pretty Girls Lyrics | 15 years ago |
neko confirmed that the song is about abortion in recent ny times article. from her comments, i don't think it's meant to be at all accusatory. |
Neko Case – People Got A Lotta Nerve Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I was thinking: So the saying says An elephant never forgets Standing in the concrete cage Swaying silent, saying They walked over the ocean And their dreams, they dreamed awake Until the lights grew dim Until the cop cars came Everybody tells me this is crazy Yes, I know it I'm a man, man, man Man, man, man eater But still you're surprised-prised-prised When I eat ya We know They call them killer whales But you seem surprised When I've been deep down To the bottom of the tank Where you can't turn around They took half your leg And both your lungs And I craved, I ate hearts of sharks I know you know it I'm a man, man, man Man, man, man eater But still you're surprised-prised-prised When I eat ya Yes, I'm a man, man, man Man, man, man eater But still you're surprised-prised-prised When I eat ya It will end again in bullets from.... It will end again in bullets from.... |
Emily Haines & the Soft Skeleton – The View Lyrics | 15 years ago |
These are the lyrics to "Eau de Toilette." The copy of the album circulating the internet is incorrectly tagged (based on the tracklisting on the album liners). |
Stars – Bitches in Tokyo Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Chris came up with the title and music and it's apparently named for Amy specifically, and also for the band in general, as Torquil says they were all bitches on their last trip to Tokyo. |
Neko Case – In California Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I love this song; it's so melancholy. Also, I believe it's: Another fool playing songs that don't matter For people who chatter endlessly 'Nother suicide on the 405 |
Neko Case – Deep Red Bells Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"A hand print on the driver's side / It looks a lot like engine oil / And tastes like being poor and small / And popsicles in summer." I love how she incorporates these details of the victims and prospective victims--the innocence and modesty of their childhood, especially--into a whole detective/crime theme. Before learning about the song's inspiration, the hand print reference never made much sense to me. I think this will always be one of her best songs. |
Neko Case – Star Witness Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Ever since reading about the story which inspired it, this song gives me chills. My favourite line is probably, "My nightgown sweeps the pavement; please, don't let him die," because it creates such a strong image of a woman standing, with her gown blowing, while the child is rushed away. |
Neko Case – I Missed The Point Lyrics | 16 years ago |
To take it literally, I think it's something along the lines of, "I cannot and will not ever understand how or why the universe works, but our love is simple and something I get." I want to say the first two lines, about lightning and clay, are saying, "Regardless of my lack of understanding, I can still function and go on," although that seems a bit unlikely, since the alternates offered are both nature-based, as well. |
Stars – Bitches in Tokyo Lyrics | 16 years ago |
andreaaa - Good point; that seems pretty obvious now. Farn - I'm guessing I made that mistake because the chorus is ridiculously muddled. I don't know how you could manage to sound any more accusatory. It doesn't look like submitting the song for correction does any good; I guess this means I should quit being irritated by other incorrect lyrics. |
A Fine Frenzy – Rangers Lyrics | 16 years ago |
It's "the crumbs are gone and the way, and the way is lost," according to the text on the cover of the demo. |
Stars – Today Will Be Better, I Swear! Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I love this song; Amy sounds amazing and it's so optimistic, which is what makes Stars so inspiring. I think she actually says, "Keep your head and drop your gun." |
Stars – My Favourite Book Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I'm pretty sure it's "Shattered, but not lonely." I think the song is pretty straightforward, being about love and feeling secure and comfortable with someone who really knows you; there's not a lot to read into. |
Stars – Bitches in Tokyo Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Thanks; I've submitted it for a correction. |
Stars – Midnight Coward Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Accordingly, I believe the lyrics are closer to: Sweetness, sweetness never suits me When I get it up to take you home Maybe it's love, love at first slightly drunk And I'm walking with the sun in my mouth Worry, worry is a web Gonna let it fall tonight from where we stand Sickness, weakness at the fall Of how you're going to play it How long should I stay? Promises, promises never cease to assist it And now I'm back on my back Please bite your words Hurry, hurry to believe I can always trust as much as you deceive |
Stars – Bitches in Tokyo Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I'm not sure about the line "Simply passed as sin," since it sounds like Amy says "with" somewhere in there, but it was my best guess for now. |
Stars – Midnight Coward Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I believe this is a song about not wanting to recognize a night will turn into a one-night stand, so both parties just go along mindlessly and optimistically, refusing to think it may not work. |
