Dream Theater – Hollow Years Lyrics 11 years ago
You're all wrong. This song is about Jack Bauer's fake death between 24's season 4 and season 5.
Wait a minute, that is not possible, since this song was written in the 90s, and the TV show was aired 10 years later...
Anyway Here's the breakdown.

He's just the kind of man
You hear about

-- Jack Bauer changed his name/identity, and became an ordinary worker.

Who leaves his family for
An easy out

-- He left his family (his daughter) and made her think he's dead.

They never saw the signs
He never said a word
He couldn't take another day

-- Jack disappeared just like that. At the end of season 4. He couldn't take "another day", well, it had been a long day.

Chorus
Carry me to the shoreline
Bury me in the sand
Walk me across the water
And maybe you'll understand

-- Jack is supposed to be dead. So he says "bury me in the sand". "The water" is referring to the ending of season 6 (Jack gazing at the Pacific Ocean). 24 was set in Los Angeles, California -- they had nice beaches and shorelines there.

Once the stone
You're crawling under
Is lifted off your shoulders
Once the cloud that's raining
Over your head disappears
The noise that you'll hear
Is the crashing down of Hollow Years

-- This verse refers to the terrorists. "The stone" is their WMD, and "the cloud" is the mushroom cloud of the nuclear bomb. "The crashing down" could refer to the explosion of the bomb (season 2 and 6), or the failure of the attack (season 4).

She's not the kind of girl
You hear about
She'll never want another
She'll never be without
She'll give you all the signs
She'll tell you everything
Then turn around and walk away

-- This verse is about Jack's daughter, Kim. She'll never want another man to be her father. Now that her father is (supposedly) dead, she'll try to turn around and walk away from all the sadness in her life.

GZA/Genius – B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) Lyrics 13 years ago
GZA is quite possibly among the top 5 lyricist of all time, and definitely the best in hip hop. His words are like swords but few listeners understood them. Now, "B.I.B.L.E." is the deepest and hardest of them all.

That said, an understanding of its meaning is not required to enjoy this track at all. Just know this: on the album Liquid Swords, this is the final track and the only "warm" song on the entire record. Listening to the album from start to finish is like going through a cold forest, some streets in a rough neighhood, and survived some gunfights, and finally here you are -- a warm haven. You gain strength from the warmth. This particular track really is a spiritual journey, even if the rest of the album weren't.

Literally, the lyrics are instructions given to a soldier that is about to die. Biggie and Pac must have been playing this song in their heads while they got shot. Since everyone of us will die sooner or later, we all should remember these instructions and follow them before our lives end.

Porcupine Tree – Anesthetize Lyrics 13 years ago
I can totally relate to the music, but not at all to the lyrics.
Except the final part:

"I could see you
But I couldn't hear you
You were holding your hat in the breeze
Turning away from me
In this moment
you were stolen
There's black across the sun"

this is standard melodic black metal in disguise. I always sing the final line with shrieked vocals. Stale story really: boy sees girl, boy likes girl, girl leaves, boy recalls grunge hit "Black Hole Sun".

Porcupine Tree – Open Car Lyrics 13 years ago
Open Car is actually set in the O.C. (Orange County, California)
"Summer dress" is a reference to the character "Summer" on the popular TV show The O.C.

"You think you're smart
I think you're art
We agree on this"
Summer thinks she's smart while she isn't. Ryan thinks her body is a work of art while it isn't. (Ryan obviously has no appreciation for art.)

*spoilers below*

This is basically Ryan having sex with Summer after Marissa died. Not incest, but it is immoral nonetheless. Friends don't sleep with each other's girlfriends, and Summer is Ryan's best friend's girlfriend.

*spoilers end*

Finally, "an open car" is the type of car you see in California all the time. Because it doesn't rain much there.

Porcupine Tree – Open Car Lyrics 13 years ago
To im_a_pirate:
steven wilson has been making psychedelic and prog for so long, that he takes it for granted. he doesn't think porcupine tree music/lyrics are any more complex than the average rock band, because he takes it for granted. he works with opeth (a progressive metal legend) and he probably already forgot how non-complex a rock band could be (Opeth is like 50 times more complex than a pop punk Simple Plan).

also, steven wilson has been known for hiding the true meanings beneath his words, especially after Blackwater Park. I wouldn't take his words when he said "I don't think we are a progressive rock band" or "Porcupine Tree music is very very simple". He probably said that for a purpose only known to him: 1. Maybe he just grew tired of the word "progressive" and wanted to be marketed as something new (as I said, he has been making prog for a very long time). 2. Maybe he wanted to stress the "complexity" of "the way the albums are constructed". So Steven, would you like us to call you "epic rock" or "construction rock"?

some fans are able to listen to Porcupine Tree without realizing it's prog. I guess this is one of the reasons why they're special.

Moor: open land usually with peaty soil covered with heather and bracken and moss.
The guy is NOT the Moor, he is "searching my way" on the moor.
Much more poetic now.

Opeth – Godhead's Lament Lyrics 13 years ago
it's great to read some story but NO THANKS.
Opeth are an awesome band, until you start reading their lyrics ... I never understood a word of it.
"Still Life" means "a painting of a number of (usually) inanimate objects, which have often been chosen for a specific reason and arranged in a certain way." "Face Of Melinda" is simply the face of a girl, period. And that's how I interpret it. I just take it as instrumental music and forget about the existence of any back stories.

"Searching my way to" is very exciting. But what does "perplexion" even mean? I don't wanna know.

Ladytron – Beauty*2 Lyrics 13 years ago
There is a reference, but not to Andy Warhol film. It's actually set in a futuristic sci-fi world (as you can tell from the music itself).
Let me tell you what this song is really about.

//back-story
In the year circa 2116, a faster-than-light starship Von Braun is colonized by aliens known as "annelids" or "The Many". (They're a species similar to the Zerg in StarCraft.) A couple onboard try to escape from the ship. Their names are Rebecca Siddons and Tommy Suarez.
//back-story ends.

You are the hero. The couple contact you for help. You repair the escape pods for them, and "rendezvous" with them. You watch them escape in the pod and you are wondering "hey can I go with you?" The answer is no, you can't go with them. Your job on the ship "is not over". You still need to fight the aliens before you can go home.

"Beauty Number 2" refers to Rebecca Siddons. SHODAN is Number 1 (that is, your virtual girlfriend) and Siddons is "Number 2". The romantic thing is attractive, but not the main focus of this song. The main focus is RESPONSIBILITY. You could go with the couple, but there would be "consequence" -- it would "all turn to dust". It's up to you to save the universe blah blah blah (but since Thom Yorke said he could do that, why can't you?)

You have to experience the scary, cold and lonely Von Braun to understand it better. It's a warm and touching (while also a little sad) feeling to finally see someone escape from the ship alive. And this song captures that feeling perfectly.

"It's not over" is the key line here. You will want to hear this song only when it's NOT over. When it IS over, there are happier songs to listen to.

Baby Bash – Suga Suga Lyrics 13 years ago
Some mentioned that it's about a type of drug called "Suga". If that were true, Steven Wilson would have to learn from this singer Baby Bash, because he wasn't able to hide the hardcore content beneath his soft vocals as well as Baby Bash did.

"Suga Suga" is just a lovely love song about a lovely lady. May imply a form of relaxed sex, on a lazy afternoon. But no drugs. The soft textures of this song is genuinely unique. It's an R&B song, and the feel can't be found in any other R&B song or in any other genre. In this sense, it's a one-hit-wonder.

BTW, this song is by Baby Bash featuring Frankie J, two singers that are known for nothing else. About two years later, here came another song "Obsession", this time by Frankie J featuring Baby Bash. The song is, again, about the obsession with a young lady. It's just funny that the two singers only have two famous songs, and took turns "featuring" each other.

Black Sabbath – N.I.B. Lyrics 13 years ago
As I became a metalhead, I noticed the first metal band -- Black Sabbath, the first metal album -- Black Sabbath, and the first metal song -- still "Black Sabbath".

However, N.I.B. is the best track for new listeners. Don't believe when people say this is dark or distorted or symphonic or whatever. This is NOT. The early Sabbath albums are as accessible as they get. Unless you are a princess living in your palace made of sugar, who never saw the dirt in the world, you will like Sabbath's classics, for sure.

It's a love song with real catchy melodies and easily understood lyrics. I wouldn't be surprised if someone put this and "The Reason"(Hoobastank) in the same "greatest love songs" list. The first line says it all, and is the best line to start a love letter to your crush with.

Sabbath songs had a solid dirt feel to them -- they were far from as metallic as newer bands such as Iced Earth and Megadeth. Sabbath is called metal, but actually feels more like soil and rocks, not iron and steel.

Porcupine Tree – Blackest Eyes Lyrics 13 years ago
quote: "The whole album shows how collaboration with Opeth has opened a new world to Steven Wilson. Death Metal and Black Metal are worlds of intense guitar riffs and distorted lyrics."

Steven Wilson worked with black metal bands too? Well, this song's lyrics are quite "black".
I think Steven Wilson changed the face of Opeth's albums too. From Still Life to Blackwater Park there's an obvious difference. Opeth has since become more modern, more mainstream, despite Still Life being the best of them all.
I guess Opeth should be thanked for PT's incorporating progressive metal elements. The 21st century Porcupine Tree are considerably better than their psychedelic counterpart back in the 90s. (all the more reasons why Pink Floyd sucks.)
And "Blackest Eyes" is considered to be the best PT song ever, on the best PT studio album ever. (that's not my opinion, just according some RYM votes)

There is a picture of "Blackest Eyes", on the In Absentia album cover. Ugly guy. Definitely a serial rapist.
A better explanation: that picture is not the rapist, but the girl being raped. She has the blackest eyes, not him.
Either way it's enjoyable lyrics.

Opeth – The Drapery Falls Lyrics 13 years ago
it's all about sex, but not happy sex, sad sex.
Nip/Tuck season 4 has a scene in it, Christian wearing a piece of "drapery" and is forced to have sex with Michelle in front of Burt. When "The Drapery Falls" (from Christian's body), Burt took a look at his penis and realized how incredibe it was. But Christian isn't happy at all about the fact that he could prove his ability in front of Burt (the husband of the woman he loves).

Opeth – Patterns In The Ivy Lyrics 13 years ago
it's like walking down the campus of Ivy League. In universities, it's usually quiet and the acoustic guitar portrays that nicely.
The patterns in the ivy is that universities would lead to the real world, while at the same time feels isolated from the real world.

Opeth – Harvest Lyrics 13 years ago
all the "Harvest" songs in the world mean the same to me: gaining something that you have fought a long time for.
The Neil Young version was happy, and this one is sad. Happy because you finally got the thing you wanted, and sad because you fought (too) hard for it.
And it's almost like, when you finally got it, when it's finally over, it's not as satisfying as you had hoped.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Lyrics 13 years ago
two-headed is metaphor. I'm a Two-Headed boy because I have two distinct mentalities, first being post-punk and second being progressive. It's rare, because most progressive bands don't do punk, and most punk/alt bands don't do prog.
There are three-headed girls out there too.
This comment has nothing to do with the song though.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Communist Daughter Lyrics 13 years ago
Continuing my previous comment:
The "mountaintops" are in plural forms, which indicates that there are other girls exactly like her, being shared by the ugly men in the village. Sometimes even three-way.

The music sounds so innocent, I never thought it would be pornography -- I guess it's something we have to live with whether we like it or not.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Communist Daughter Lyrics 13 years ago
the "shared prostitude" theory is correct, but I really don't want to interpret "mountain tops" as her breasts. I assume that only the "inferior" men would have sex with her (because they couldn't get a date otherwise), and for these men, she is the top quality thing in the whole world, the finest thing they can have, a.k.a. the mountain top.

Think about it, why would semen stains the breasts??? Seriously.

Opeth – Demon Of The Fall Lyrics 13 years ago
I like it that Opeth has many songs about girls. Why not just understand them like the usual pop songs, in this case, the "Demon of the Fall" is trying to rape the girl inside her house,

She rose, screaming at closed doors.
Seductive faint mist forging
through the cracks in the wall.

that is to say, the Demon hasn't seen her completely but already had a glimpse of her through the wall, and smelled her seductiveness.

"Run away Run away", is sung by clean vocals, but makes no difference, it's still the Demon's thoughts. The Demon was thinking, "You can run away, but I'll still catch ya."

"CREDENCE" is but the credence of her virginity. She didn't die.

That's just my understanding, and I found it to make a lot of sense too.

Olive – Miracle Lyrics 14 years ago
IMO it's about having a crush on someone you know.
The chorus is about hanging out with that person. You like that person but they don't know it. I think that's what "one-way love" means.

New Order – True Faith Lyrics 14 years ago
I read the first several comments.
By the title alone, it's about believing in faith. (Does that make sense?) Most people thought that too, until the songwriter himself revealed the answer. It's officially about drug dependency. Someone mentioned "this song is about organized religion just being another drug". That's a good point but this song is supposed to be positive, not negative.

There are a number of reasons why we can interpret it differently.

1. The songwriter wasn't a drug addict himself, neither am I. So the song doesn't tell you how drug dependency really feels like. And you don't wanna know.

2. In order to make it a hit, the producer made them change the lyrics. It's exactly what producers should do. Now everybody can relate to this song one way or another.

3. the new wave melody is so positive and bright. There's nothing dark or depressing here. Not like drugs.

4. The title is still "True Faith", which seems unrelated to drugs. Religious people yada yada. I'm a pagan and this is how I interpret the song.

My interpretation 1: Counter-terrorist. After a long day and long night of intense action, Jack Bauer sees the morning sun and thinks "I used to think that this day would never come".

2. The plane crash in Lost. John Locke's plane crashed and now he can move his legs. "I feel so extraordinary, something's got ahold of me." The Island is the true faith here.

3. Generally, it can be about a true faith in whatever you believe in. and the lyrics always seem to apply. The lyrics seem so flexible.
