Tesla – Edison's Medicine Lyrics 15 years ago
It's nice to know that these are definitely the lyrics because as far as I can tell, they're the only ones published by the band (unless maybe there's a tab book out there or something. (see Wonderful World lyrics, they're totally wrong in a couple places). But anyway, Edison's Medicine, about their namesake getting screwed over by Edison and Marconi. Great ditty.

Tesla – Wonderful World Lyrics 15 years ago
I think these lyrics are wrong. It's not "Get some pearly walks before they turn to frogs," (I mean, what does that even mean???), but "polly wogs before they turn to frogs," you know, polly wogs (spelling?) the little fish things that turn into frogs (sheesh, who made up pearly walks?). Also, it's not "Ever since Johnny went to Nam, he loves his men the way he loves [his arm]," but "...he lost his mind when he lost his arm." Anyway, great song, good feeling, but really, try and get the lyrics right.

Warrant – Uncle Tom's Cabin Lyrics 16 years ago
This is my favorite Warrant song, and lyrically, it's one of the more original of the hair/melodic metal era. For once a song not about sex, drugs, falling in or out of love, or partying. It's not that the lyrics are really creative-the language is pretty typical, but the subject matter is far different and it fits the banjos used in the song perfectly.

Van Halen – Runnin' With The Devil Lyrics 16 years ago
If I recall correctly, in an interview in 1978, Dave said that he wrote this song about his early morning workouts, mainly jogging, that he did with Satan. He and Satan met at the Whiskey--the Devil was trying to see behind Eddie's back to figure out how he did the tapping, and Dave got pissed that he was leaning on the stage, and had him removed until after the set. Anyway, after the set, he and Dave were hitting on the same blond and discovered that they have similar tastes, and actually hit it off as friends. So, there you have it, jogging with SAtan.

I think this is Malcolm X. I love these lyrics.

Switchfoot – Daisy Lyrics 17 years ago
OnDistantShores I think said it best but I think it goes beyond the trials of life, but also I definitely think there is a kind of sin/redemption message here. God won't just help you through life's difficult times, but He'll also help you turn your life around, repent, be born again, etc.

This is killer. The chickin' pickin' toward the end is absolutely killer. Great guitar.

Van Halen – Ice Cream Man Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the Van Halen site says that "I got puddin' pie, banana dixie cups" is the lyric, but I've seen a Van Halen sheet music book that said "I got good lemonaid..." So, when I played this live, that was what I said because it sounds more like what Dave says. By the way, this is a cover so Dave didn't write the lyrics, but it's still one of their best songs and the definitely Van Halen-ized it.

Van Halen – In A Simple Rhyme Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I agree. I love the fact that the music rocks, but the lyrics are, well, sentimental/nice/happy. I love this song, top 10 VH songs ever.

Van Halen – Hot for Teacher Lyrics 17 years ago
The hottest teacher I ever had was a PE teacher in college, she was on the soccer team at another university down the road and taught Soccer at my university. Anyway, she had the greatest legs man, and I totally wanted to ask her out, but alas, turns out she was married, so that dream never came true.

Oh yeah, the song...well, it's the greatest rock song of all time. Yeah, that's just my opinion, but my opinion is right baby!

Van Halen – Dreams Lyrics 17 years ago
Do you know what's cool about this song (besides everything that's been written so far)? Most rock songs, including most Van Halen, are written in minor keys, that give them angst and darkness. Then there's Dreams, which (if my music theory is up to speed-which there's a good chance it's not) is also minor until the end, when all of a sudden, Eddie pulls out this beautiful major key two-handed tapping solo which, being major, sounds happy and hopeful, just like the lyrics. I love that.

Van Halen – Feelin' Lyrics 17 years ago
Yeah, I agree with what's been said, but I think the greatness of the solo is what truely sets this song apart. Since it wasn't in the Dave era it gets overlooked, but the middle double-timed section is killer stuff indeed.

Van Halen – Eruption Lyrics 17 years ago
I can’t help but reply to those critical of Eddie. I was tempted to just say, “Dear Eddie haters, you suck,” but then I figured while that’s what I felt inside, it just wasn’t a very good argument. So, to the Eddie haters:

In the course of human history, there have been but a few rock guitarists who will be remembered for changing the face of rock guitar. So far we have Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, and Kurt Cobain (but not in a good way, so I’m not going to talk about his crappy guitar playing and the era of music that was the buttcrack of rock that he was responsible for making popular). What about Jimmy Page? Well, to be honest, Page didn’t really change the face of rock guitar, he just wrote some of the most amazing riffs of all time. What about Iommi? Iommi didn’t really change the face of rock guitar either, but instead created his own parallel heavy metal guitar universe (mainly a sound more than a style) that played along side rock at the time, namely Jimmy Page, who wrote killer riffs in the style that Hendrix invented. So, three guitarists who took what came before and improved on it. Eddie is the last guitarist on this list to change the face of rock guitar and improve on what came before. Their first album came out in 1978, and when people heard it, a new era began. That was 29 years ago folks, and we’re still waiting for the next guitarist to take rock guitar to a greater place. Grunge came along (dang it, I said I wouldn’t talk about this) and guitar playing regressed to the point that the less talent you showed, the more you were revered. That was the point of grunge, it was the antithesis to what was out at the time, i.e. bands that had guitarists who could play. Yes, maybe it had become cliche, shredding guitars that is, but that doesn’t change the fact that it takes far more talent to play what Eddie Van Halen (and all those who tried to copy him) played than it takes to play even the most difficult grunge song.

There are some guitarists who have equaled, even possibly surpassed, Eddie Van Halen in technical brilliance (some mentioned earlier in other posts) although I’d venture a guess that there isn’t a guitar song on the face of the earth that Eddie Van Halen couldn’t play. There may be some who play with more passion than Eddie, although I think he gets unfairly labeled as lacking any feeling: how about 316-an ode to his son you “Eddie doesn’t play with heart” SOB’s, I’m the One (who says happy isn’t an emotion), House of Pain (who says anger isn’t an emotion), Year to the Day (ok, fine, you want sadness and feeling, here’s a depresser), or Josephina (a child to his mother, asking to learn about her childhood)? Just because he hasn’t committed suicide doesn’t mean he doesn’t play with feeling. Anyway, back on track, there may be guitarists who surpass Eddie in every criteria of what it takes to be a great guitarist, but there has never been a guitar player who was as technically brilliant as Eddie AND could play with as much feeling as Eddie, AND influenced a generation like Eddie, AND helped invent guitar hardware like Eddie, AND...etc. In other words, Eddie is the all-around greatest rock guitar player of all time, and Eruption is his trademark song.

If this doesn’t convince you Eddie haters then...YOU SUCK. There, take that.

Van Halen – Can't Stop Lovin' You Lyrics 17 years ago
I hated this song for a long time because it's pop, and Van Halen shouldn't be doing pop, but I have to admit, it's catchy and it's got a sweet sentiment, so when I'm feeling mellow, I don't mind it. I love the lyrics, however.

Van Halen – 5150 Lyrics 17 years ago
TD Phoenix is right. It's about a selfish woman (I assume since Sammy's straight and he's singing it) who always want's "one more," never content with compromise and sharing. Thus, she wants things 51/50 instead of 50/50. Also, I never thought of the other meaning of the fact that it's a police code for criminally insane, but that could apply to the person Sammy's singing to.
