Dirty Pretty Things – Tired Of England Lyrics 14 years ago
'Don't breathe a word about your loss'

rudyard kipling reference there, a la 'man who would be king' of the libertines. x

David Bowie – Heroes Lyrics 16 years ago
to me this sounds like the precursor to bands like arcade fire..that sort of marching along feel to the song

Babyshambles – Albion Lyrics 16 years ago
he says maidstone in the nme live version..

The Libertines – Music When The Lights Go Out Lyrics 17 years ago
this song was written before the famous fall out but they both have said they were always falling out so it's probably still a pete/carl love song.

submissions
The Libertines – What Became Of The Likely Lads Lyrics 17 years ago
"blood runs thicker" than water, to complete the phrase, really clever play on words suggesting they're like brothers..

thick as thieves is just a common phrase for good friends "oh them two they're thick as thieves"

The Libertines – Boys In The Band Lyrics 17 years ago
yeah i remember reading in Last of the Rock Romantics that Pete was annoyed people thought it was about groupies or something..

Any relation to the Play/Film of the same name?

Babyshambles – Love You But You're Green Lyrics 17 years ago
pete said in an interview (culture show) it was based on a bit in brighton rock and also the song 'i love you but you're boring'

submissions
Babyshambles – 8 Dead Boys Lyrics 17 years ago
"'You look better now than last time But you still look better from afar' I can imagine this line being used as a backhanded compliment aimed at a girl - basically you look good from a distance but when close you're not that special. "

i thought it was because every interviewer always says "you're looking better" even when pete's made no effort to give up drugs

Babyshambles – Albion Lyrics 17 years ago
this song makes me feel english

submissions
Babyshambles – I Wish Lyrics 17 years ago
"I'm piping almost every night
I watch my dreams float by, out of sight"

makes crack sound romantic.

Babyshambles – New Love Grows On Trees Lyrics 17 years ago
Carl: 'i never told you to'
Pete: 'it's just a song' - i never noticed that, quite an insight.

but apparently they did make a death pact

Babyshambles – Pipey Mcgraw/Pipey Obrady/Monkey Casino Lyrics 17 years ago
"one's too many and 100 ain't enough" obviously about addiction to heroin or whatever; have it once and that's too much, if you do that then you'll never be able to have enough of it..

submissions
Babyshambles – Sticks and Stones Lyrics 17 years ago
it's both the song don't look back into the sun and the tabloids.. seeing as dont look back into the sun is about the tabloid the sun, who pete now also jokingly claimed made the first step in getting pete and carl back together.

submissions
Babyshambles – The Blinding Lyrics 17 years ago
yeah pete refers to 'the blinding' as the bright flashing camera lights as you come out of a car or something in front of the paparazzi..

also in the books of albion, pete says he has to make a 'blinding record' to prove himself or something, maybe that's why it's called 'the blinding ep' as in "this one's a blinder!"

Babyshambles – The Man Who Came To Stay Lyrics 17 years ago
"If you sail into the sun, beware the eyes of green"
This is a "good ship albion" reference. sailing into the "sun" of the arcadian dream is not all its cracked up to be and ppl get jealous (like carl)"

i thought that it was a warning, much like don't look back into the sun, he's saying if you do look back into the sun beware of jealousy..

submissions
David Bowie – Across the Universe (The Beatles cover) Lyrics 17 years ago
Lennon plays guitar on this apparently and Bowie said he wanted to make a more angst-driven version of the song as the other versions seem to just be saying 'nothing's gonna change my world' non-chalantly.

David Bowie – Eight Line Poem Lyrics 17 years ago
it's got 8 lines in it and it's called eight line poem :) bowie knows.

submissions
Babyshambles – Gang Of Gin Lyrics 17 years ago
"Who will buy my beautiful roses?
Who will buy my beautiful songs? "

a quote/reference to 'Oliver!' haha. Maybe Pete seems himself as an orphan beggar who has to sell his songs on the streets.. I suppose at the time of writing this Babyshambles probably didn't have a record deal and so he was literally wondering who would sign his band?

submissions
Babyshambles – Delivery Lyrics 17 years ago
"And all, you skins and mods, now get together
Make pretend it's 1969 forever"

classic.

submissions
Babyshambles – Carry On Up The Morning Lyrics 17 years ago
the name suggests a happy-go-lucky 1960s tongue-in-cheek, double entendre-laden version of 'up the morning'...

submissions
Babyshambles – Beg, Steal or Borrow Lyrics 17 years ago
i remember reading/hearing an interview where pete says about how reporters 'will tell you anything just to get you in the car' and talk to you, and sometimes if he's trying to get away quick from somewhere he'll jump in..

also 'oh what a life on mars' sounds quite hancock influenced ('stone me, what a life') but also the obvious relation is to david bowie...but i dont know

Babyshambles – Back From The Dead Lyrics 17 years ago
it's "i heard it said you had come back from the dead" not 'he'..

submissions
Babyshambles – Lost Art of Murder Lyrics 17 years ago
"what a nice day for a murder
you call yourself a killer
but the only thing you're killing is your time" is that a reference to the allogations that the tabloids made that he killed that actor Mark Blanco?

"get up off your back
stop smoking that
you could change your life
do you think you'll change their mind?" another reference to tabloids; he could get clean and sort things out but people would still think he's a waster. quite explicit really.

submissions
Babyshambles – At the Flophouse Lyrics 17 years ago
"I took one draft of life
Paid only the market price" Pete admits that he stole this line from emily dickenson and then just stuck on 'now im estranged'

i love the way he says soz haha

The Libertines – You're My Waterloo Lyrics 17 years ago
Pete and Carl are known for being fans of Hancock's Half Hour...

The Libertines – Love On The Dole Lyrics 17 years ago
"Amaze! One of the best ones. Northern songs was the Beatles writing partnership (Lennon/McCartney). Carl & Pete an obvious comparison heh heh. Check out the Beatles film A HARD DAY'S NIGHT..." yes exactly what i thought.. plus their early stuff sounds quite beatlesy

submissions
The Libertines – The Man Who Would Be King Lyrics 17 years ago
"This is an awesome song, and reading the other comments here, the theme of it fits well with Tell the King, I think." They both start the same as well.. and you can hear "i've got a little secret for you" on tell the king and 'i've got another secret for you' on man who would be king.

Also strangely relevant that the man who would be king is about two close friends who go to make their fortune and end up falling out and one of them dies and the other is left with nothing.. if you think of Carl as Peachy and Pete as Daniel Dravot? Maybe not..

submissions
The Libertines – All At Sea Lyrics 17 years ago
"i'm all at sea dad" i guess that can only be seen as a reference to his father who has rejected him?

submissions
John Lennon – Jealous Guy Lyrics 17 years ago
some kind of fore-sighted answer for the culture club's 'do you really want to hurt me'? i think so.
