Lily Allen – Sheezus Lyrics 10 years ago
This song really seems to miss the boat when assessing female pop-star-conquerdom in 2014: no mention of Taylor Swift. Lily didn't see it coming, I guess....

Taylor Swift – Sad Beautiful Tragic Lyrics 13 years ago
She really takes it to a new level with this one.

Although her collaborations on this album are big hits...it's this one--one she wrote on her own--that really blows it out of the water. She's never done a song like this before...but she does it soooooo well. Very mature. Restrained. And the vocals are so perfectly controlled; flawless.

Can't get this out of my head. Its mood is irresistibly sad and lovely.

Marina and the Diamonds – Primadonna Lyrics 13 years ago
It's basically Material Girl Cubed, but Marina takes that concept to another level with her deliberate and caustic satire of the "primadonna" archetype.

“Electra Heart is the antithesis of everything that I stand for. And the point of introducing her and building a whole concept around her is that she stands for the corrupt side of American ideology, and basically that’s the corruption of yourself. My worst fear — that’s anyone’s worst fear — is losing myself and becoming a vacuous person. And that happens a lot when you’re very ambitious.” --Marina Diamandis

Marina and the Diamonds – Fear and Loathing Lyrics 13 years ago
This song is the epiphany of a dark moment. Reaching rock bottom, and realizing there's no where else to go but up, but forward.

In the video/film Electra Heart: The Start, it is also fascinating to note that she wears the same outfit as in the Shampain video, so it there is this interesting extension of her last album that is expanded into the concept for her second. At the moment singing "And now I see, see it for the first time" (I actually hear "ya" as in see you for the first time, but I'm not quite sure--), she looks in the mirror, so you get the sense that it is really an extraordinary moment of self-realization.

I can hardly wait for the album.

Just because it's simple does not mean there is no deep meaning. Perhaps by "deep" you meant "enigmatic" or "cryptic."

Yet another great Vanessa song for which there exists no decent quality recording!

Mariah Carey – For The Record Lyrics 17 years ago
^maybe true, but i think the song fits in pretty seamlessly with the album musically and content wise (the lyrics seem to reflect the same relationship she is talking about in a few other songs).

i wasn't aware of the ad campaign until i saw the above comment.

Kimya Dawson – Tire Swing Lyrics 18 years ago
how does this not have more comments.

it has this beautiful simplicity in the lyrics. and twinges of sadness that sort of pop out of nowhere and really create depth. in the first verse for example, she sets it up to be like she's taking down someone's picture because she doesn't care or he's a total jerk and then there's strange sort of mature complexity in the admission "It just makes me sad whenever I see it".....and then the part about the tire swing seems like a plain old happy thing "I sang along while I was swinging, The sound of our voices made us forget everything" but then the meaning of the song one again submerges itself in something deeper with the next line
"That had ever hurt our feelings"...so not just everything but everything that had hurt feelings and obviously implicit in this is the fact that there was a painful history.

"if i'm a spinster for the rest of my life
my arms will keep me warm on cold lonely nights."

i looove this.

Tori Amos – A Case of You (Joni Mitchell cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
MMMmmmmmmm.

I think the comments above pretty much sum it up. The lyrics border on poetry; they are so aesthetically phrased, particularly the chorus, and it all just comes together so well with the music. It's so fantastic that Tori did her version of this, because as great as Joni's version is, I feel as if the piano is better suited to the depth and seductive quality the lyrics suggest. It's really interesting because I think Joni's version brings out something different than Tori's - Tori's is somehow a bit darker, maybe. Something about the piano.

Vanessa Carlton – Best Behavior Lyrics 18 years ago
Seemingly generic. But the best part of this song is in the details, I think. The 2nd verse stands out to me because it conveys the closeness of the intimacy and much of the rest of the lyrics seem to focus on distance. And that insane binary - between closeness/intimacy and distance/growing apart - is t the heart of the song. It's terrible to be close then not close, and to not know why yet all the while be plagued by memories that are haunting because are the only residue of such comforting and pleasurable experiences.

Vanessa Carlton – Fools Like Me Lyrics 18 years ago
The reference to cracks is so effective - on one level the literal visual metaphor and then the connotation of stepping on cracks and bad luck- But she really gets her message across with the emphasis on the "cracks not counting" she will love bravely even when she sees little signs, signals, the cracks of their relationship (the "distant look" in the eyes, the "words you could never say) She loves blindly, she refuses to see the cracks, but somehow she "always knew" this is also so relatable. Every turn in the lyrics and music of this song is just superb. And I bet the "it's breaking" part will come out even moreso in the studio album version.

Vanessa Carlton – Fools Like Me Lyrics 18 years ago
"obviously...we've all been fools for love because we've all been trampled and we still go back and it's like what's wrong with us,why - but that's the whole point; it's important to always remain a fool."
