John Mayer – Back To You Lyrics 17 years ago
The lyrics are so true, me and my boyfriend just broke up, he is my first love and vice versa. I still mull in ambiguity over why it ended because I believe we were meant for each other. So as the song says, I'm never over you, I know that I will never forget him, he is the archetype of the perfect boyfriend/husband for me. "I'm sleeping in my bed
with your silhouette"...this is how I feel every night when I lie in bed and reminisce all of the memories, and the first thought that comes to mind when I wake up, a feeling of remote emptiness.

Dave Matthews Band – Stay or Leave Lyrics 17 years ago
bigshot937 you nailed it! I had the most metaphysical relationship for a year and a half (my first love), we planned on staying together forever, he said he was going to marry me in the future. Then one day (literally) he said he was confused and didn't know what he wanted anymore, considering he was moving away for school in the fall. Then he started to make a myriad list of excuses, that we are not compatible, justifying this resolve, although I know that's not the truth. Listening to this song brings back those memories that we shared and parrallels it perfectly. Everyone was jealous of our relationship because we seemed to have it all, so much love and affection beyond the physical, we were soul mates. I hope one day he will realize that we are meant to be and ultimately come back to me in the end. I feel like Dave, his lyrics are my exact thoughts. The song paints a picture in my mind of all of the times we shared, the sleepovers we had, laughing hystarically at the most ridiculous things, dancing together, he was my other half. This song brings back those nostalgic memories and it makes me want to cry. I'll always love him.

Dave Matthews Band – Lover Lay Down Lyrics 17 years ago
This song IS about a break up. His true love that he had once been with had broke his heart, and all he longs for is to be back with her. So he says "we were so much younger than" convincing her that they "are stronger" and capable of handling the relationship if they get back together. He's trying to convince her to let go of the past and move forward with him, leave all of their issues "million reasons" and toss them away. He loves her so much that he could not settle with anyone else, she is irreplaceable, "I will wait for no one but you" ...this song is sad when you think about it, he's begging for her love. I love the song though!

Dave Matthews Band – The Dreaming Tree Lyrics 17 years ago
MULLET2k has the most touching interpretation and I see it exactly the same way, aside from the fact that I've incorporated my own relationship into it because I feel that it reflects what is going on in my life presently.
I believe this song is about a couple, specifically a relationship that fell apart. The dreaming tree was his past life, the euphoric world that once surrounded him, being his past relationship and all of the joy that filtered through from it. This dreaming tree (relationship) was his world and what gave him reason to live. For some reason the relationship starts to grow weak and they break up, he thus says “progress takes away what forever took to find,” he has lost what he longed and worked hardest to find. The pressure heavily weighs down on him, he is floating in sorrow and all he longs for is to be with that person, for time to rewind and bring him back under the tree, his shelter. This woman he was in love with had promised him timeless love; perhaps dreams of remaining unified for eternity. Something went terribly wrong and both of their past dreams together are now shattered. He feels the need for consolation and goes to his mother, who will be there to tell him that everything will be okay, as she did when he was young. For some reason he is bitter at his partner for something she has done or said during the relationship, and this is perhaps why they have come to this resolve. He goes on to say that he would leave her if he could but he can’t seem to let go, possibly his love is too strong. She refuses to speak to him, perhaps the silent treatment, which is the worst form of torture, and he is begging for some form of communication. He seems to be saying in the last half of the song that the girl seemed to have everything made. Men came to line up at her door while he probably had to fight his way up that line to reach her. She had every opportunity at her fingertips but did not feel satisfied until she had met him, and now she feels her world collapsing without him. She cannot comprehend why their relationship has ended and drinks to fill the void. Black tears stain her cheeks- she is crying and her mascara paints a ravine down her porcelain cheek. They are both ultimately suffering and everything they had dreamed, the life together they had created is now but a distant memory in the past. No one else will ever be able to satiate or replace the love they had felt for each other. Their lives will proceed yet they will always hold a place in each other’s hearts, no one can replace your first and true love. So this song parallels my relationship, and it’s my favorite song!

Death Cab for Cutie – Marching Bands of Manhattan Lyrics 17 years ago
OF MOROSE has the most accurate interpretation. Me and my boyfriend just broke up, and he used "and there is comfort in the sound" in his msn name directed to me. I looked up the song to find lyrics and came to this site, the interpretation he gave was amazing because I needed to understand it from an objective point of view.

Paul Simon – Slip Slidin' Away Lyrics 17 years ago
He wore his passion for his woman like a thorny crown...
My love for you is so overpowering
I'm afraid that I will disappear..

Those are my favorite lines.
I think the song is about how the closer we get to what we want most in life (the one we love most), suddenly seems to become out of reach for some reason, we're pulled in another direction. When things don't work out the way we plan them it is God's will to decide what is best for us, or so we hope. The man seems to be so in love with his present girlfriend, that he almost fears the relationship because the love he feels for her has so much power over him. He loves her so much that it is painful "thorny crown". Maybe the paradox is that he loved her so much that he had to leave her, in fear of losing her some other way perhaps because he is moving away. We thus slip slide away from what we want most in life, although only God holds the power to control these situations, we have to believe that he will light our path and guide us in the right direction. My boyfriend and I just broke up and he used this song in his msn, I believe speaking to me. So I'd like to believe this interpretation!
