Iron & Wine – Cinder and Smoke Lyrics 17 years ago
I get something totally different. I see the couple as good and strong together, but there are issues between Her and her parents, some sort of negative relationship with her parents, something the love of her partner has helped her partially overcome.

They clutch hands as her parent's home, her old family home, burns. Drunken mother, father clutching a photo (of another child? A dead one?) - we see her parents as this dysfunctional couple.

The second verse, obviously sexual, he seems quite confident this is the manner she will deal with the fire at her old family home. Perhaps it is the manner in which she deals with other things her family upsets her with.

Outwardly, the girl says she wants the fire to end - 'pray for rain' - but inwardly, she hopes the rest of it burns, removing all elements of this family experience she's had.

I say this because I relate happily to this song - my parents are imperfect, they bother me, and my partner supports me when they do so.

To look at your partner and know one of you will see the other's death, one will spread the ashes, to feel comforted by that. That's what it means to me. I want these lyrics engraved on my tombstone or something. It puts into clear words what I feel with my partner as we come to realise we may just be that couple some day.

Iron & Wine – Muddy Hymnal Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the overall story is pretty much all there; it's the tiny nuances I love. For instance, all through the song I get a sense of it taking place at least a century ago - everything seems so archaic, the times of taverns and wooden buttons and captains and preachers. The mention of 'telephone' jars me, bringing me back to the present.
