Ani DiFranco – Seeing Eye Dog Lyrics 15 years ago
Yeah I was going to criticize your application of gender onto these characters, until I read the last line of your post...

I'd actually be more tempted to think this is a woman talking about a woman..."I want to take a long, cool drink from your bucket"...*ahem*...

Damien Rice – Elephant Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with someone who commented earlier that the "she" is perhaps the ex and the "you" is perhaps the girlfriend. He wants the feelings he has for the old love to die.

My take on the whole "you can't paint an elephant quite as good as she" is that maybe it's referring to the whole "elephant in the room" metaphor...maybe the other girl was better at ignoring the problems they had that were so obvious but neither of them wanted to confront? Perhaps by "painting" the elephant she was making it blend in, disguising it, making it easier to ignore?

It's possible, I guess...

Cat Stevens – How Can I Tell You Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this song, but I have to disagree with the person who wrote before me and said he liked the version with the de Beers commercial better. I was actually really sad when I saw that commercial and noticed they used this song. It's just promotion of materialism as a way of expressing love, which I just think is a little sick. I like Cat Stevens' version better because it feels a lot more genuine and heartfelt. He had no ulterior motives when he wrote or sang this song.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Candy Coated Dream Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this is about a dream of a life with the someone you love. It's romanticizing about being with that person forever and having a wonderful, happy, candy-coated life and then knowing that things probably won't end up that way.

That's my take on it, at least.

Brother Ali – Letter From The Government Lyrics 15 years ago
I love this one.

"You're clinically crazy if you think you can pay me
A figure that can make me slay these innocent babies
I identify with a slave wishin to break free
He was victimized by the same system that raped me"

How does he write this shit?! It's amazing.

Jars of Clay – Faith Enough Lyrics 15 years ago
My favorite lines:

"I'm home enough to know I'm lost"

"Enough a cynic to believe"

and

"Be still enough to finally tremble"

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not sure when he uses "and the cardinal hit the window" to show that it was just another event in his life...I think it symbolizes something beautiful and innocent that mistakenly and swiftly is killed. I think it's quite a tragic metaphor, actually.

My interpretation would be to say that he was confused by this person's death, because he wanted to believe that God wouldn't do something like this. And they prayed and nothing happened. And it seemed like this person had great faith. And yet (s)he still died. And he was wondering why and was very sad about it. I don't get much sense of anger, though...

Brother Ali – Uncle Sam Goddamn Lyrics 15 years ago
dotson,
I don't think most of this nation would fit under the category of "fists raised"...most of them are blinded by their greed and consumerism, as well as the propaganda the media spews out at us.

Joanna Newsom – Inflammatory Writ Lyrics 16 years ago
I had to say, I was a bit discouraged when I read down the comments and realized everyone was talking about writing and the process of writing. Except for one or two people, at least.

What I got from this song was basically remembering a love that was once so amazing and now all it is is a memory. I think the two lovers tried to go back to that but failed miserably, there seems to be a lot of conflict and perhaps stubbornness. Things could not be the same again as they once were.

It's just that bittersweetness of remembering how great it was and then realizing that it's not like that anymore. Which is why I find this song to be joyful as well as morose.

That's my take on it, at least.

I can't believe nobody has commented on this. It's such a wonderfully beautiful song. Every one needs to listen to the acoustic version. It's enough calming beauty to change your life.

Nickel Creek – Can't Complain Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about a guy and a girl who get into a relationship that is too serious for both of them to handle, and then they're not really sure how to get themselves out of it. Neither of them are really happy but they think they'll make each other happy, and for a while they do, until they start looking for more happiness. I think the "can't complain" part is not really serious...it's just kind of like "well, this is a part of life, so we can't complain, we got ourselves into this, it's our fault." although I'm a bit confused when he talks about cheating on her like...

"she can't complain because I warned her I would cheat on her, and well...I'm a guy. that's what guys do"

And I have great doubts that that's serious at all...so that makes me wonder if he's just kind of being sarcastic throughout the whole song...or showing the way they blame each other for everything when it's really all both of them doing everything not one person or the other...

hmmm...I'll have to ponder this a while longer.

Stone Sour – Omega Lyrics 16 years ago
Oh, and I find a lot of politically centered meaning here. It's about the demise of our country as a result of the apathy of its people. All the mentions of government, fascism, opression, classification, the "bigger, better, now" attitude of the media, etc. To me that's the most obvious meaning. It's about his general frustration with America.

Stone Sour – Omega Lyrics 16 years ago
I love that people have been saying this ISN'T a poem because it's a random collection of thoughts well...what is poetry if not random collections of thoughts? That's all it is. Ever heard of a little something called "poetic license?" Yeah. That's because poetry is anything and everything the person writer it could ever desire it to be. This is most definitely poetry.

Placebo – Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
It's disappointing that they played such an amazing song on such a thoughtless show like the OC.

I love this song. Placebo's version. I actually really don't like Kate Bush. But this version absolutely gives me chills. I love the heartbeat in this song, not that it actually is a heartbeat, but it reminds me of one a lot. I just...love it.

It's definitely liars and killers...not lions and clowns/camels. They have parts in their video when the words sang are written on the screen and they write the word "killers." So...there you go.

I wouldn't say this is their best song, but it's one of their catchiest. I like it a lot and it gets stuck in my head a lot.

Everybody seen their music video for it? You can find it on Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuLeIjWOwK4

Good stuff. They shot it in their hometown Champaign.

Foo Fighters – The Pretender Lyrics 16 years ago
I think FooFighter0234 is close with his (her?) explanation. I think this song is about the state of our country in general. I think this song is speaking from the point of view of a person who will not tolerate the kind of mindlessness the American people and the American government are exhibiting right now.

"I'm the voice inside your head
You refuse to hear"

"Keep you in the dark
You know they all pretend"

"Done bleeding ignorance
in your defense"

I think it's partially about how naive we've been, and also partially how stupid our government has been. It's kind of a "we're sick of this bullshit" sorta song. Aimed a lot at the government and the establishment. If you watch the music video it makes sense, there's a line of police/soldier-type figures armed with masks and suits with numbers, in the end the red backdrop explodes onto them. It's pretty damn sweet if you ask me.

Cloud Cult – I'm Feeling So Fuckin' Fine Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is such a horribly sad song. I think the meaning of it is pretty obvious, he's trying to escape his life by doing lots of drugs and having sex with women he doesn't really care about. It's pretty heart-breaking how depressed he must have been after his son died and he split up with his wife.

Cloud Cult – Car Crash Lyrics 16 years ago
From an interview between Craig Minowa and Left Hip Magazine...

"Car Crash" was a really weird experience. I had the melody of a song written and I was spending an evening in this small southern Minnesota town, just sitting outside under the stars and waiting for the lyrics to come to me. Suddenly, I got this really vivid imagery of this young teenage couple in a car crash.

The whole song is a storyline snapshot of those 5 seconds between the time the couple realizes they are in entering into a deadly accident and the actual ends of their lives. In those five seconds there's this sort of slow motion mental conversation between them about how much they love each other, how much they wanted to do with their lives and how much they hope they can come back and be together again.

The next day, after writing that song, the big news in this little town was that this teenage couple had been in a car accident on a gravel road just a few miles from where I wrote the song that same evening. Unfortunately, neither of them made it. I don't know if it's coincidence or synchronicity, but whatever it is, it's odd.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 16 years ago
And to comment again upon the imagery of the bird and the window:

Perhaps Sufjan intends it to mean that you can be flying through life, minding your own business, and then suddenly everything can change. He gives the impression that this girl really enjoyed her life and really understood what it meant to be alive, but then she got bone cancer and everything changed. Her life ended very quickly and for seemingly no reason at all.

Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 16 years ago
This is such a terribly sad song, but I love it so much. My favorite part is

"On the floor at the great divide
With my shirt tucked in and my shoes untied
I am crying in the bathroom"

and also when he uses the metaphor of the cardinal hitting the window. It's so precious and beautiful and sad, all at the same time.

It sounds like this girl really got the most out of her life. It also sounds as if she had absolutely no reason to be taken from this earth, and the lyrics suggest that he is confused and shaken by her death. He understands the way God works and it doesn't seem to me that he is upset about it, more observant and solemn.

He realizes that sometimes things just happen, and it's all up to God, and sometimes it doesn't make sense, and sometimes you can pray and question and never get answers.

That's how it seems to me, at least.

Cloud Cult – Clip-Clop Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is so strong to me. It's so deep and meaningful even though if you look at the lyrics it doesn't seem to be that way. The lead singer is almost screaming out. It's obvious he's looking for something he can't find. He's trying to find happiness but he doesn't know where to look. It's a very desperate song.

"Slish-slosh, life boat, float me away" --He wants to escape the problems he's having in his life.

"I've found escape is a state of mind" --This brings us to a recurring theme throughout Cloud Cult's music...the idea that you create your own future and your own life. Whatever you believe in is the truth, you only have to change the way you think, and you'll end up changing your life. We create our own happiness. In this song he's expressing the difficulty of finding that happiness sometimes.

I believe it has to do with overcoming his son's death, as a lot of his songs deal with that...fighting through that grief and agony and trying to continue through life despite that tragedy.

Cloud Cult – Purpose Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the ending of this song, when he's semi-screaming, singing oooh-oooh-ooh and there's the piano in the background and it's kind of going crazy...I also love the piano part after he says "to hell with the going down" for the last time...soooo pretty. Just everything about this song is great.

To me this song is about dealing with the struggles you have in your life, and realizing there is more to life than what meets the eye. There is more to life than just the material world we live in. There's something beyond that, whatever you think it may be or whatever it means to you. It's a very sad and chaotic song, but I think the overall message is that you have to face your problems or your problems will overcome you and you won't be able to see the beauty and the meaning in life.
