Pearl Jam – Yellow Ledbetter Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Loved this song for years and years. Great use at the end of 50/50. Great film btw. Just one of those great instances of film and music placement. Don't know how I went so long without this on my iTunes |
Grateful Dead – Ship Of Fools Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Obviously an amazing song. Love Jerry's contemplative almost longing voice in this one. What does the phrase, "I won't slave for Vegas" mean? I've been thinking about this today as the song's been stuck in my head. |
Grateful Dead – Ship Of Fools Lyrics | 12 years ago |
HAH wow all this time I thought that was the lyric. =] Should have read before writing that. Oh well. |
Moe. – Hi and Lo Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Second to last line "on the road to unlimited devotion" always makes me think of the Grateful Dead and their song "The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)" That's gotta be a reference right? Good song nonetheless. Not my favorite by any means but ill jam out to it once in awhile |
Grateful Dead – The Music Never Stopped Lyrics | 12 years ago |
yeah one of the few good contributions she gave to the dead. actually she wasnt as terrible as I thought she would be when I saw her with DSO at gathering of the vibes this past summer. Really awesome song. The sax is great and Phil bumpin along on that bassline. Beautiful |
Moe. – Rebubula Lyrics | 12 years ago |
amazing song, obviously one of moe.'s best. I just can't get over some part of the song that sounds like part of Buster. Sure, thematically, No Doy as an album has a lot of similarities but I just see the closeness in the two songs. on top of that the first (hopefully of many) time I saw moe. at Vibes they did Rebubula > Buster > Rebubula which blew my mind. peace |
Moe. – Four Lyrics | 13 years ago |
while I rarely try to interpret moe lyrics and usually just appreciate their jamming, four is one of those songs I have found meaning in. riding back to boston after my sister's graduation from college this song came on and it really resonated with me. I know it obviously wasnt the intended meaning when moe. wrote four but I interpret it as that long periods of time go by quick (i.e. four years in college) the whole "it was so easy" part is not like whatever that was went through was easy in terms of difficulty but it went by so easily/so quickly. I have no idea about the four sleeping dog lies. again this is just how I take the song which is how songs should be taken. yes writers of song have something or a number of things in mind but using music to your own personal interpretive power is something all listeners should take advantage of. peace, love, unity (and moe!) |
Dr. Dog – My Friend Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I think this song is talking about a friend whose thinking about dying as the end of it all, without a possibility of an afterlife. love how the song turns into a second song almost when the other vocalist (dont know his name ha wish I knew dr dog better since theyre so awesome) |
Grateful Dead – Pride Of Cucamonga Lyrics | 13 years ago |
such an awesome song im discovering. wonder why they didnt play it live really. gotta here some phil and friends versions now. just an awesome song to me. phil is really good for a few tracks to break up albums |
Grateful Dead – Unbroken Chain Lyrics | 13 years ago |
uh, dont know if that was just a joke but they took the sample and splicd it to sound as such haha. sorry if I sound dumb. love AnCo and the Dead! |
Three Dog Night – Mama Told Me (Not to Come) (Eric Burdon cover) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song was written by Randy Newman as lightheared reflection of the LA party scene in the mid 1960's. I feel like it's pretty obvious what the song is about but it is in fact a damn song. Man, if only I were born in 1950 and not 1990, haha. But who knew Newman wrote it, just learned that today. |
A Tribe Called Quest – Steve Biko (Stir It Up) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Yeah the title is kind of a stretch but Biko has a few mentions in the song hence the titling. like when phife goes, "I'm radical with this like the man this song is after". ATCQ was all about "stirring it up", mixing new styles and in the same light biko was trying to mix up south africa/bring down apartheid. nice little homage while it's not truly a song just about biko. midnight marauders could be one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time |
Phish – The Mango Song Lyrics | 13 years ago |
as good as phish are as musicians, sometimes their lyrics really bug me. thanks to subskin for the little tidbit, at least it doesn't seem completely redic. I just could not get over "Your hands and feet are mangos, you're gonna be a genius anyway". It always screamed to me "pretentious/senseless for the sake of being pretentious/seneseless" love trey's guitar work here =] |
RJD2 – Take The Picture Off Lyrics | 13 years ago |
ahh where is this sample from? sounds like a stand up act |
Death Cab for Cutie – We Looked Like Giants Lyrics | 13 years ago |
simply love how at the end "and I held you closer" just fades...sort of a wistful memory of past love/old fling someone said it best, but gibbard really captures the imagery of young love and the adventuresome nature of it. been going back to this album for seven years now! |
Animal Collective – Guys Eyes Lyrics | 13 years ago |
wow, the early versions are so different. kind of wish noah kept it the way it was and put it on the forthcoming tomboy...but then again guys eyes is one of my favorite MPP tracks. Damn, I like both |
Yael Naim – New Soul Lyrics | 13 years ago |
hearing this sampled in girl talk's feed the animals turned me on to the song. everytime I heard the sample used I could swear it was a song from the 70's. she really has an amazing voice, definite sound of a throwback |
The New Pornographers – To Wild Homes Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Wow, this song has always been cool to me since I got into "Mass Romantic" but I never thought of what it meant beyond it's extremely catchiness. But looking over the lyric, I am devoid of a clue. Haha damn!? Reading up on "Letter from an Occupant" it seems Newman doesn't always have to make sense with his lyrics and will oft fit lyrics around what will sound good with the music. Hopefully there is some deeper meaning here |
Animal Collective – Loch Raven Lyrics | 13 years ago |
sometimes people just say odd things to sound cool or artsy or unique (...and a lot times they just sound like giant douches, like slinkstersars here) Like many AC songs, I'd be lost on the lyrics without the internet despite absolutely falling for the music. The music is just so dreamlike it kind of sedates the listener. But the lyrics....wow. Really gives me the feeling of having someone that seems so worthy to you of not giving up on. And I will not give up on her =] |
Blink-182 – Mutt Lyrics | 13 years ago |
a decade plus and this song still makes me sing along when it comes on shuffle. got to thinking its just about swingers who just don't give a shit. but the line "she's open waiting for more" kinda lingers to me and makes me wonder if the girl is into the guy a little more than just sex. ah blink 182, deep stuff =] |
Wilco – Hummingbird Lyrics | 13 years ago |
this, to me, is one of wilco and tweedy's best written songs. there's just something so poetic about it and the similies and metaphors fit the subject matter perfectly. how can it get any better than, "Remember to remember me, standing still in your past, floating fast like a hummingbird"? |
Animal Collective – Tikwid Lyrics | 13 years ago |
yeah I wonder if these are the actual lyrics because they seem a little absurd. (as if AnCo isn't absurd) not to take away from whoever submitted the lyrics. I simply just wonder if they are 100% accurate. "And I can feel your rhythm if you feel my rhythm" Love that line. To me it describes to people into each other that are just establishing the fact that they're on the same wavelength Ahh Avey |
Avey Tare – 3 Umbrellas Lyrics | 13 years ago |
hmm this song sticks out most after my first listening experience of "down there" perhaps he is referring marijuana when he says green umbrella. I kind of feel like weed to me is my green umbrella that "I've been hiding under". maybe that is what he is trying to say. AC as a whole are one of my most admired group of musicians but i find so much difficulty in deciphering the meanings of their songs sometimes |
Animal Collective – Did You See the Words Lyrics | 13 years ago |
and this is why they are one of my favorite bands. sonically, I feel so attached and yet sometimes I think the daunting task of deciphering the meaning of their songs is such a rewarding experience. Props to "yesitsme". I really appreciated their words about this song. Ah, if I could only spend ten minutes talking to Avey and Noah (obviously geo and deakin would be cool too, but you catch my drift) |
GZA/Genius – B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) Lyrics | 13 years ago |
one of my favorite tracks on liquid swords and its not even by GZA. so deep and while I can't relate to the whole 5 percenter beliefs and the like, I can still relate to being 12 living in hell so that line chokes me up sometimes. im glad gza let killah shine on his own. really makes the classic album go out with a bang |
David Bowie – Young Americans Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I definitely appreciate lazerpj's comment and it is undoubtedly well thought out and analytical. I agree with your points but I don't completely think the "I read the news today" Beatles allusion is trying to say that. Perhaps it seems lame of me to disagree without offering a better interpretation of the Beatles allusion, but I simply can't figure it out. |
Slightly Stoopid – Mellow Mood Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Loved this song for years and it just popped in to my head. I've wondered before and I still wonder what does "I love you twice a month since you had our first child mean". I know it has been asked before but I can't really seem to get what Stoopid means by that. Any insight? |
Joe Walsh – Life's Been Good Lyrics | 13 years ago |
yeah the ending of this song is so hilarious to me, I always have to listen to it. Some dude, probably one of Walsh's buddies saying "Here come the Wahh Wahhs" HAHA must have just been high or something but it's so goofy and funny. Obviously the riffs in this song are timeless. Makes me want to put down the bass for a bit and get back guitar |
Redbone – Come and Get Your Love Lyrics | 13 years ago |
And Sifuasher hit it perfectly, Mexicans have Native American heritage. The Vazquez brothers happened to be Mexican-Americans with Native American heritage |
Redbone – Come and Get Your Love Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Lennon, sorry but you kind of sound like bsing. Every source I've encountered lists Redbone as being Native American. They even got the idea for putting together an all Native American band from Jimi Hendrix (who was part Native American himself). The term "Redbone" is a direct reference to their Native American heritage. What about their song "We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee", doesn't that seem to have some Native American resonance? I know you haven't posted in years but logically, I think you're talking out of your @ss Anyway, check out their video for the song wearing some pretty Native American looking garb http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vUOg3Y7ve4 I mean it might have been a gimmick but c'mon. I'm really surprised people come on here and act like they toured with people, especially Redbone. haha I mean great song and all but people just make me laugh |
Modest Mouse – Autumn Beds Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I feel like there is no way this is supposed to be about an actual court case. Not calling out any of the previous posters, but to me it just seems like the subject matter isn't that literal |
Bob Marley and the Wailers – Ambush in the Night Lyrics | 14 years ago |
love the funky synthesizer line especially after bob sings ambush in the night in the chorus. the live version in santa barbara is awesome. go bob |
Grateful Dead – New Speedway Boogie Lyrics | 14 years ago |
can someone enlighten a younger dead fan about the Altamont "fiasco". thanks and peace |
Grateful Dead – Sugar Magnolia Lyrics | 14 years ago |
deadhead22 has such an excellent point. they wouldnt have written this and intended it to be the cause of people fighting especially on the internet. but I read this was the breaking point in the relationship between Weir and Hunter but I can't figure out why. Someone said it was because Weir replaced one of Hunter's lines with "Jumps like a willys in a 4 wheel drive" Is that supposed to mean something? Why would Hunter be so mad |
Animal Collective – Graze Lyrics | 14 years ago |
ah word. good looks on the sample |
Phish – Runaway Jim Lyrics | 14 years ago |
awesome song. i was wondering where it came from since i cant seem to find it on any album. the only version ive heard is from a live show. i know this is one of phish's most played songs live but im just curious of its origin |
Dr. Dog – Shadow People Lyrics | 14 years ago |
just getting in to Dr. Dog but I read somewhere this is the songwriter's view from his West Philly apartment window. Most likely discussing the "wrong people" or drug dealers, etc. Love the upbeat piano it's almost ironic. This is my first Dr. Dog cd thought I would check them out since theyre from Philly and are described as psychedelic. peace |
New Boyz – Tie Me Down Lyrics | 14 years ago |
alright this song comes on the radio all the time so its unavoidable sometimes..but i thought i misheard the lyric so I had to look it up how the fuck does one "make love, sex, weed all in bed" yeah i get making love and having sex but HOW THE FUCK Do you make weed? that line is retarded |
Peter Tosh – Fight Apatheid Lyrics | 14 years ago |
interesting fact, very curious especially since i'm studying apartheid in one of my courses. great song. tosh politically strong as ever here |
Stevie Wonder – Black Man Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Just got Songs in the Key of Life. As a music fan should have had it a long time ago but Stevie's gonna be at Bonnaroo! anyway the first minute or so I thought, "oh no another song by a black artist denouncing whites and only celebrating black discoveries" well im glad I was wrong because this is a very good message saying how we all contribute. this is very important especially with racists of all races (wrongfully) claiming they are the essential inventors. peace and unity brandon |
Jay-Z – Empire State of Mind Lyrics | 14 years ago |
i really want to know why jay says "rest in peace bob marley" he doesn't really have to do with New York i love bob marley obviously and this was just a random thing to me anyone have some insight? thanks |
Mos Def – Rock N Roll Lyrics | 14 years ago |
as a white hop hop head this song really pisses me off. dont get me wrong i love mos def but how can this song not rub me the wrong way. yeah i know the black roots of rock n roll. they're undeniable. but like someone else said the stones never claimed to be the creators they were very open about expressing where their music came from. also, i think it very immature to point out some of the less talented white musicians (limp bizkit and korn) when there are so many garbage black artists out there too. def acts as if the majority of white people who care about rock n roll are in to korn when it's not true. |
Animal Collective – Essplode Lyrics | 14 years ago |
im only familiar with 2004 and beyond ac (including eps) but i have one live show i listen to a lot (atlanta in 07) and this with fireworks is so awesome. i love this song but i havent heard the original. im movving my way down ac's discography but still not at danse, cant wait. love the lyric "You gotta stop all your worrying Essplode" says so much to me |
Sublime – I Don't Care Too Much For Reggae Dub Lyrics | 14 years ago |
to the question about opie, besides being a close friend of the band he also did some drumming for the robbin the hood album as well as creating the album art. on top of that i think he mastered the album since it is heard "Opie, He's our Master" but i dont think this is brad on heroin. just the band kicking it as someone said, chilling with some dank i presume |
Rusted Root – Send Me On My Way Lyrics | 14 years ago |
if you like this song, which I do, check out Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al". doesn't it sound like they got some inspiration from it? not calling them anything just interesting thing i wanted to point out |
Paul Simon – You Can Call Me Al Lyrics | 14 years ago |
seems to be about a midlife crisis. yeah i know it says on wikipedia but it makes sense. love the beer belly line. also from wiki on the bass line "The song features an unusual bass run performed by Bakithi Kumalo, in which the second half is a reversed recording of the first half." So just saying. but the bass really drives the song. But doesn't this remind anyone of Rusted Root's "Send Me on My Way". I mean it sounds like they got at least a little inspiration from this |
Animal Collective – Who Could Win a Rabbit Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I think marillchu is legit. they do use email and back then it would make even more sense. anyway stupid to argue when this is such a beautiful song! |
Wilco – I'll Fight Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Obvious meaning but awesome song. Definitely can picture the soldier as mentioned before. LOVE LOVE LOVE WILCO'S NEWEST ALBUM =] |
Animal Collective – Graze Lyrics | 14 years ago |
3:00 sounds almost like a Pan Flute group or something. Get the feeling of being isolated from someone or something that is out of reach. |
Animal Collective – What Would I Want? Sky Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Well everyone pointed out the Grateful Dead sample but I wanted to just say how it was really tastefully used. I mean, I'm a sample nut, absolutely love them (mostly in hip hop) but there is nothing worse than a badly used sample that doesn't feature any altercations or new use. Note, this is the FIRST EVER Dead sample used in a song. Pretty historic and I hope it means a lot to AC since I know Avey and Panda (and most likely Geologist and Deakin) were heavily influenced by the Dead. Very glad to find this sample and to see how it was reworked. Song is dope overall... I think Fall Be Kind feels like it could fit on MMP pretty nicely maybe it was just the tracks they didn't finish in time. As you know AC works on their songs for years before they even get recorded so I dunno, just a thought. |
