This song is about Morrissey and his relationship with the childhood home town. Growing up in a place riddled with poverty was not easy and it greatly influenced his writing. I think Mac did a great job of portraying Morrissey as painter painting out every song and then eventually gaining fame and losing "every single instict" that he had previously known from his old life. | The meaning of this song is simple. Its direct purpose is to emphasize the subjetivity of good and evil and further explain that we are all men and women of conviction, it just depends on the discretion of others. One of the most important lines that was miswritten is "He's a sinner AND saint for defending" Obviously if we are all sinners and saints there is need need for a the hero archetype. This song is the first step on an album that is completely representative of the mystics journey. | |

To me this whole album is about two phase transitions that occur in life and what happens to a person when they occur at the same time. The two transitions I speak of are: 1: The collapse of a significant personal relationship (i.e. marriage, losing a life long friend) 2. The spiritual growth of the self as it struggles through a materialistic world to achieve some higher knowledge or wisdom. Dark Night of the Soul is a term used to describe a specific phase in a person's spiritual life. It is used as a metaphor to describe the experience of loneliness and desolation that can occur during spiritual growth. This "dark night" is a necessary phase in the mystical quest toward gaining enlightenment or union, hence we are given in the chorus: "Redemption is a bitch to end on. and Suddenly everything's real." It is important to note that in mysticism the purpose behind the path is to dicover what is ultimately real in the universe and then connect with it. I find it desperately human of the main character to bitch about how hard life is but also how fulfilling it can be. This song not only the turning point at the end of the album but also contains some of the most deep-rooted human concepts. |
