It's also a reference to fellow New Wave band Duran Duran, quoting their song "Hungry like the wolf". Duran were famous for their glamourous videos containing very thin women in exotic locations. For extra inspiration look up the video for "Girls on Film" or anything by the band Arcadia. You'll get an idea of where *this* song comes from.
I also agree with what sapphirexx has said on the subject of society's obsession with anorexic thinness. The ultimate in rebelliousness would be to not give a shit and to be a healthy weight for your height and just be yourself instead of subsisting on less than 100 cals a day. It's the "foot-binding" of the modern age!

I think you're spot on with your interpretation raid357.
I can speak from personal experience over the meaning of the song because I've lived it.
"My morning sun is the drug that brings me near to the childhood I lost replaced by fear"
... and the psychological dependency on ecstasy as the relief from mental suffering...
"I used to think the day would never come that my life would depend on the morning sun"
The feeling is something I've never forgotten. For a few hours, I could be the person I felt I was inside. The inner and outer worlds matched and all in the Universe was "right"... I literally pilled myself stupid, but despite that I still miss the little blighters!
In the most literal sense, Ecstasy was "My chemical romance". |

I can't believe this song has been overlooked for a comment because, in my opinion, it's up there with John Lennon's "Imagine" as a great secular spiritual anthem of our times. It alludes the the spectrum of life from gender and sexuality through to the colour of our skins. We are all united, always for all time as we are made of star dust. This a song of absolute heart-centred feeling..... Feel the Es, but also feel the transcendent truth! "Keep breathing... Keep loving". |

I think this song is incredibly beautiful in how it expresses the mystery of life, especially the "circles in sand" line. We live, we die, we love... We are human and our humanity is a scared thing beyond any religious sentiments. As our conceptual ideas fall away we become pure. |
