Okkervil River – A Glow Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the lyrics are wrong and the line is "the lane where he's lying; no heat in his home" since that is a recurring line in the album. "In the oven's heat this house is now a home," from "Song of Our So-Called Friend"; heat and warmth signals that people are living there. I agree that this song is about a homicide.

Okkervil River – Black Lyrics 17 years ago
I hate the fact that people are so resistant to the literal meanings of a song. Molestation is so obvious and so many points in the song support that is is about molestation. The line "where's your mother?" refers to the fact that the mother should have been there when the father took the girl where nobody was around. The most important line "I'll call some black midnight...tell his brand new wife and his second kid" tells of how the man disappeared after the molestation, left the girl's mother and started a new life with a new wife and a new child. Jamisonlikewhat, this can't be a song about abandonment because it wouldn't make sense for the father to drop by the house, put his daughter in the car and drop her off in some remote place in order to abandon her; he wouldn't go back to the house he would just hightail it when his wife wasn't around and the daughter was outside the house by herself.

The National – Baby, We'll Be Fine Lyrics 17 years ago
This song seems to be about a real loser who is extremely dissatisfied with his life. He dreams of his boss noticing him and every morning he has to look in the mirror to try to convince himself that his day will be all right. He's clumsy around his girlfriend and needs the reassurance of others "say something perfect something I can steal."

The National – The Geese of Beverly Road Lyrics 17 years ago
This is a quote taken directly from an interview with Matt Berninger, the lead singer of the band at www.neumu.net.
He [Berninger] added, "I do occasionally steal bits of real conversations or little scraps from movies and TV. Heir to the Glimmering World is a Cynthia Ozick novel that came out while I was finishing the lyrics to 'The Geese of Beverly Rd.' It was just what I needed, thanks Cynthia." This song, he explains, is set in the neighborhood of Brooklyn where he and Bryce Dessner lived during the recording of Alligator, a place called Ditmas Park.
"It's a beautiful neighborhood that feels more like Savannah, Georgia than Brooklyn," he said. "The houses are all free-standing with nice yards and wrap-around porches. I was sitting outside one night watching a bunch of kids running up and down Beverly setting off car alarms. The song is theirs. Recording out there was nice, very relaxed."
