The Rocket Summer – Save Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is really interesting, and a great picture of the great Bryce debate. I love Bryce, and he's a wonderful musician and person. If you listen to his Early Years EP, which he recorded by himself when he was 15 (yes, 15) the songwriting and lyrics are more mature than most of Hello, Good Friend. The debate is this: did he start pandering to the hoards of teens who pay his bills? I don't think so. He's an incredibly upbeat, happy guy and his music reflects that. But I think there are times when he's afraid to express his older self. Songs like Goodbye Waves and Driveways, Christmas Present and TV Family show what he's truly capable of, and if Save (and the other tracks off his iTunes EP) are any indication, it looks he won't shy away from his potential in the new album. Personally, I love this direction. Bottom line, an amazing prodigy of a musician who should push himself to write more songs like this. Cheers. |
Sister Hazel – Where Do You Go? Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is a wonderfully honest look at the hopelessness of a relationship lost. He writes from the standpoint of knowing he's been beaten by the relationship, and he feigns an attempt at salvaging it. But ultimately, this song is about admitting when it's time to throw in the towel. Great piece from a band that remains my guiltiest pleasure. And it was even featured in the most recent episode of Scrubs -- you can always count on Zach Braff to deliver the right song for the moment. |
The Format – Faith In Fast Cars Lyrics | 17 years ago |
on the live EP "And Now I Hope You're Alright" this song reads: You said it was suicide on the Fourth of July. I say it saved my life. AND NOW I HOPE YOU'RE ALRIGHT. It does, trust me, it's the name of the album. Is there another version where he says, "I just wish you had died." It'd be interesting if he changed that lyrics, because that would seem to reflect his pre-If Work Permits mindset. After Nate wrote If Work Permits, he said he had something of an epiphany about the value in "Just being alright" and not being mad at this girl anymore. Pretty incredible song. Another example of how this band is the best at making a simple song so brilliantly complex. Cheers. |

How are there not more comments on this song? This is the best one Waking Ashland has ever done, so powerful, and brilliant lyrics. |
Ben Lee – Begin Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't think this song is simply about walking outside on a beautiful day. The phrase "I only wanted (or want it) to begin" refers to the idea of a relationship that has been doomed before it could get off the ground. It's as if he is dating (or just got done dating) a girl whose idea of what could go wrong doomed the potential for what could go right. He is saying that he knows things can be difficult, but that he wants her to give it a chance before she comes in and nay-says. It's a beautiful song about not second guessing things that seem natural, and allowing things to unfold according to their natural order -- and the first step to that: let them begin. |
Howie Day – I Do Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is the best Howie Day song there is, except maybe Ghost. Incredibly sad, but really well done. I don't know how I came upon it, but I do have it in my library. Just amazing. |
The Format – At the Wake Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Here's what I think: this song is a story. A guy is reminiscing about a breakup, and lamenting that they had to drift apart. I think they didn't understand each other after a while ("you just don't see me anymore") and they've drifted. The turning point is when they "wake to the sound of the phone as it hits the ground" and the singer and his ex are reunited at this funeral. Upon seeing her, he realizes how much he misses her. He wants a second chance, even if it's a "second chance to say goodbye." I get a little confused though, by how many people are involved in this story. Either way, it's an incredible song, and one of the better Format pieces. Absolutely worth buying, as its a departure from their normal style, but with all their usual brilliance. |
