Amanda Palmer – Trout Heart Replica Lyrics 12 years ago
Oh my lord can we all just chill the fuck out for a second? This is why vegetarians get such a bad reputation. Obviously there is the pro-vego message in here, but we don't have to jump down each other's throats every time a contrasting opinion is voiced.

I'm surprised no one has made the comparison between this song and "Have To Drive" - she's using the death of an animal (something that, for many reasons, moved her deeply) as a starting point for a discussion of her mental and emotional state. Her experience at the trout farm triggered reflections not only on the omnivorous lifestyle but on life itself.

It seems like she's employing the way some omnivores (including herself) keep eating meat even when they deep down know they don't feel right about it as a metaphor for how she's living her life;
"just keep touring/keep on ignoring/be a good little trout"
Something feels so fundamentally wrong but she is too scared to face what she knows she feels.

What really consolidates that interpretation for me is the shift from asking for a smaller heart to the end result of that request. Her heart is "the size of a 6 sided die cut in half" - that's what happens when you keep ignoring what you feel, what you know, what you want. Much like how the butcher can nonchalantly toss aside the still beating heart of a dead animal simply by not thinking about the reality of the situation, if you refuse to let yourself acknowledge your emotions, there comes a point where either you hold your breath until you hit the floor, or you lose your ability to feel full stop. You don't think about what's on your plate for your entire life, it's near impossible to view it from a different perspective. You don't think about the reality of what's in your mind, you lose touch with yourself to the extent that you lose who you are, perhaps even your ability to love, and slide into numbness.

Sufjan Stevens – Dumb I Sound Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is what happens when unrequited love turns into a kind of hatred.

Sufjan Stevens – Jacksonville Lyrics 12 years ago
Why is calling a lyricist a poet seen as such a compliment, and denying that they are a poet an insult? Some lyrics are far more poetic sounding, I'll admit, and it makes sense in that respect. In the choice of vocabulary, in the structure, the rhythm and metre they are more poetic (e.g Nick Cave), and I personally wouldn't put Sufjan Stevens in this category. That does not mean I see him as a lesser artist - I think he's brilliant - I just think his lyrical style is not like that of a poets. Also, a good poet is not always a good lyricist, and visa-versa - lyric writing and poem writing are two different art forms, and should be seen as such, but they both deserve the same degree of respect.
Also, why do people assume that a poem needs to rhyme to be counted as a poem? Ever read any Sylvia Plath? Allen Ginsberg? In all honesty, I think the best poets (or lyricists) are those who break the literary conventions and don't stick to a traditional rhyme scheme. Where's the fun in doing what's been done before?

A Perfect Circle – Vanishing Lyrics 15 years ago
The lyrics remind me of Radiohead's 'how to disappear completely'.
It's about detachment from reality, which form of detachment is a different matter.
The first impression I get is that it's about detaching yourself from a situation. You know when you're having an awful time and you just close your eyes, and pretend to be some where else? That's what I get from this song.
Or, like some have said, it could also be about suicide. The freedom of floating away and vanishing from the earth.

Billy did LSD? Well, I s'pose he didn't count it as a drug when he said he's never touched them.... Or when he said never he meant recently...
Anyway, I think drfunk got it right.

Nine Inch Nails – Where Is Everybody? Lyrics 15 years ago
Most people seem to have said it already.
I think Sapromind is kind of right. It's not just straight out optimistic though, it's a desperate want to be optimistic. Desperately hoping that there's something better in life but not quite believing it.
"maybe I wish I could try"
Wanting to try to be happy, but not quite knowing how. That's pretty much the gist of the song, wanting things to be better - to have people who care about him, be happy, get off drugs, everything, but just not knowing how. It's a twisted form of optimism.

Something For Kate – Slowdance Lyrics 15 years ago
But... What? No comments for one of the best SFK songs?
I think this song's pretty self explanitory... Not quite, but more so than most of theirs.
"slowdancing with some one who is a thousand miles away"
This could be taken literally or metaphorically - slowdancing could be just what it seems, but it's probably not. Maybe just close, intimate, but with some one who isn't at all there. This song almost represents slowdancing as a twisted contest, trying to see who'll crack first.
The chorus explains itself - she feels like everyone is watching her, even when they may well not be. It's that feeling of being so self concious that it feels as though every one in the room is looking at you.
Slowdancing
In a minefield where everybody knows your name
And every familiar face just makes her lonely
Distance and the weeks gone by
Not only some of my favourite lines ever, but also the verse that sums up the song. If you make a mistake, miss a single step, everything could be blown to pieces. And everytime she sees another fairweather friends it tears her to shreds, because everything has changed and they could never know her.
The rest is almost a conclusion for the song - you'll be the talk of the town. Her paranoia and self conciousness makes her feel as though she is the talk of the town, as though everyone's watching her.

Another theory on this song is that the girl has done something like tried to kill herself, or been through a horrible break up that everyone knows about. That would mean that her paranoia is almost justified - they're watching her because they know what's happened. And though she tries to piece her life together, she can't do it under pressure and the watchful eyes of all who know her.

There's my 2 cents :)

This song reminds me of a friend of mine.
It's about the type of person who can face anything and always bounce back, despite what people think.

Placebo – Summer's Gone Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is about an internal struggle, about trying to be true to yourself. There are also some elements of self hatred in here - "crushed by the way that you cry" and "stung by the look in your eye". Being so angry with yourself for being unhappy.
The chorus, speaking about how you "try to break the mould, before you get to old" is referring to trying to be yourself while you still have the chance.
I think that last whispered bit is just kind of words of encouragement? The rest of the song is more of a narration, but that bit is telling them to hold on.
Of course, I could be way off the mark here, but that's how I've always heard this song.

Nine Inch Nails – I'm Looking Forward to Joining You, Finally Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's about a lot more than just losing his grandmother. That's kind of the central theme to the song, but there's more to it.
Seems like he was already depressed when his grandmother died. He thought he felt at his absolute worst, and then he lost her as well - "thought he lost everything, then he lost a whole lot more"
He's so miserable and disappointed with life, and therein lies the reason for the title. I'm looking forward to joining you, finally. He was already sick of life, and her dying just gave him one more reason for suicide.

Love this song, probably the best cover SFK have done.
And, for those who are interested, I managed to track down the original. Not sure if you can download, but here's the myspace: http://www.myspace.com/trulyhazel

Something For Kate – Strategy Lyrics 15 years ago
A relationship falling apart.
He loves his partner, but she refuses to let him in. He wants to help her but she always just says nothing's wrong, lying to the person who loves her just like she lies to everyone else.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Rocket Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is about freedom. Plain and simple.
It's about wanting to stop lying and pretending and be free of all the bull shit of everyday life. He's determined to stop putting on an act, to stop obeying the voices in his mind teling him to do what is sensible and acceptable.
That's my interpretation anyway.
This is about being free from himself as well as everyone else's expectations, about finally letting go and being himself, whoever that may have become.

I think the main idea of this song's pretty easy to figure out...
Blue skies bring tears = clarity brings sadness. When you figure out what's happening, you feel terrible.

What the…?
How come no one sees this song the way I see it? No one else seems to hear the bitter insincerity in his voice. I mean, think about the line “who am I to need you when I’m down? It’s not saying that he doesn’t deserve the person, it’s a hurt and angry line, very sarcastic. The song isn’t one of self-loathing and believing you don’t deserve some one, it’s a song of anger mixed in with pain. Everyone seems to be taking every line for it’s literal meaning, but just from listening to his voice you can tell that it’s not.
I dunno, I could be way off track, but that’s how I’ve always seen it.

Veruca Salt – Shimmer Like A Girl Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with Lougolas. It seems kind of like a hit at the female stereotypes, like she's sick of trying to 'shimmer' like a good girl's s'posed to.
Veruca Salt kick ass, even without Nina they still rock.

Something For Kate – Kaplan/Thornhill Lyrics 16 years ago
This song seems to be about some one who’s continually changing themselves. They’ve made mistakes in the past, so they’re trying to find a new and better identity, but they can’t. The speaker knows what the person has done, but loves them anyway, and is waiting for them to realise they can be themselves. They’re taking they’re chances that the person will realise it & won’t lose themselves along the way.
That’s what I think anyway

Something For Kate – Light at the end of the tunnel Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about reaching the bottom. When you've sunk to the lowest point you can possibly sink to, nothing is going right and nothing seems to have a point anymore. It's when the only thing keeping you going is hoping that things can get better, looking for "the light at the end of the tunnel"

Something For Kate – Manmade Horse Lyrics 16 years ago
So many great sfk songs don't have comments yet! Crazy... Anyways. It seems like the person's depressed, unhappy with their life, but is hiding it. They want people to realise, to ask (ask me how I am, ask me how I've been), but no one's noticing at all. They're furious as people for not realising, but when people ask at all, they deny anything's wrong. But, they still think people should realise and keep asking (now you don't bother looking twice). This is such a great song, Paul Dempsey is amazing!

Something For Kate – California Lyrics 17 years ago
In an interview, Paul said that this song was about the fantasy that surrounds Cailfornia/LA/Hollywood. About how when everyone thinks of there, they think it makes dreams. Everyone who goes there gets famous, but it's about the other side. All the people who go there & have their dreams crushed, & never make it.

Something For Kate – Déjà Vu Lyrics 17 years ago
This song seems to be about a girl, & she keeps trying to figure everything out. She needs to find reasons for every little thing, coincedence & 'deja vu'. She can't accept that things don't work in patterns, & that "the world just happens".

My parents divorced when I was 7 or eight, & this song can still get to me. I'm not a person who was hugely affected by my parents divorce, but I was almost crying when I saw her perform this live. It's hard to listen to this song, it'd be very hard to perform it.

Pink – Stupid Girls Lyrics 17 years ago
This is really funny. Looking at these comments, I mean. Seriously. Some of these people are exactly what P!NK is talking about. But then there are some people saying that she's just like the girls. A lot of you really don't seem to get it. She's not saying it's bad to be sexy-she thinks "the whole world should be a nudist colony"-but she's saying that girls shouldn't pretend to be dumb to impress boys. Because stupid isn't sexy, or it shouldn't be. Also, could people not come here to insult p!nk? If you hate her, go to one of those pathetic hate forums.
Subtlety isn't exactly one of p!nk's strong points in lyrics, I'll admit that. But, her audience wouldn't like it as much if it were more complicated. & they're still pretty damn good. I'm a die hard p!nk fan, & she's the poppiest person (& only solo person) I like. & I'll tell you if she's any good live on Friday!
P.S Anyone who says she's a hypocritte is an idiot & doesn't know what they're talking about.

Silverchair – Untitled Lyrics 17 years ago
I kinda doubt this song's about anorexia. It wasn't from the neon ballroom era. Actually, it was written for Freak Show, but didn't make the final cut. So it was put on the godzilla soundtrack in 1998. Maybe the lyrics were altered for the soundtrack, but I'm pretty sure this song's about his depression.

Something For Kate – Monsters Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is amazing. It feels like he was talking about me when he wrote it! Like 'geek' said, it's a "I'm WILL make myself feel better" song. When you start getting angry at yourself for feeling depressed, or not being able to do what you keep telling yourself to do. & the line "trying to be 200 thousand years younger", when you just want to go back to being a little kid when you don't have to think. Well, that's just what I think it means. I could be completely wrong.
