Savage Garden – To The Moon And Back Lyrics 17 years ago
I think everyone has felt out of place before. Feel like they just don't belong in this world.

I can relate. You want people to like you, you want to be loved, but people just don't understand you. They don't seem to care enough about you. Surely, there must be someone out there who understands, who wants what you want. If you can just find them, you can leave this life and go to a different place, far away from this world.

I'm still looking.

Savage Garden – The Lover After Me Lyrics 17 years ago
This song used to make me cry all the time. I took a good 2 years to get over a very serious relationship I was in. This song hits the mark exactly. Even now, it can still tear me up.

Even to this day, I still don't understand the unfairness of life.

Barenaked Ladies – Told You So Lyrics 17 years ago
Seems like a relationship that just went on too long. The love ended in it. Finally, the singer decides he's had enough of it and leaves. He realizes he doesn't even miss the woman at all. Maybe he never even loved her, but had himself fooled into needing her.

It's over. Maybe one day he'll feel bad about the breakup, but he doesn't think so.

Barenaked Ladies – The Wrong Man Was Convicted Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not completely sure about the above interpretation.

"I thought you would wait for me" makes it sounds like he really DID need space.

I once had a relationship like this. My first one. We got so close we did absolutely everything together. I loved it, but eventually I developed doubts. Did she love me or just the idea of being in a relationship? Did I love her or was I so used to having her around that I didn't know anything else.

I grew distant from her, trying to figure out my feelings. She eventually broke up with me, saying that I didn't seem to care enough about her and I didn't pay enough attention to her, but I figured we'd get back together in a month or two once I had time to figure things out. She found someone else a month later and married him.

An experience like THIS I think is what the song is talking about. You need space, you expect your loved one to be there for you when you are ready. But they've moved on.

"And all because I lacked conviction, the judgment's my mistake"

Because if the person just believed in the relationship more, had conviction, they wouldn't have been trying to figure out their own issues.

"Who's lonely now? It takes one to know one"

During the relationship, HE was the distant one and she felt lonely all the time. Now, their roles are reversed.

"I changed my mind; you said that I could change it back"

Same thing happened for me. We discussed our breakup after a while and she said that she could see us being together again in a while, after she had some time to be alone. A week later, she found someone else.

Barenaked Ladies – I Know Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think this song is completely pointless. It appears to be a commentary on society. But it appears to mostly make the point that life is confusing and random and difficult to make sense of. Which it is.

Barenaked Ladies – Go Home Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song, it's a kick in the pants for those who might take their partner for granted.

I know I was one of the people who just assumed that my ex-gf would always be there for me because she always had been. So, I could do whatever I wanted since she would never leave me. I'd go out with my friends, not caring when I got home since I knew she'd be waiting for me. Notice I said ex-gf.

This song is good advice. If you love someone, you should be there for them.

One of my favorite lines in any song is:
"If you're lucky to be one of the few
To find somebody who can tolerate you"

Isn't it so true? Love always comes down to finding someone who can actually stand all your faults. And it happens so rarely. Most relationships end because of that ONE annoying habit that the other person has that you just can't let drop. If you managed to find someone who likes you despite your faults, don't be an idiot and screw it up.

Barenaked Ladies – Alcohol Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is definitely sarcastic and is talking about the dangers of drinking.

"For while I cannot love myself
I’ll use something else"

Talking about people who have no self esteem and instead replace loving themselves with just drinking all of the time so they can ignore the fact that they are unhappy with their lives.

It is pointing out that when you are drinking a lot, you are basically getting close to self abuse.

Barenaked Ladies – Call And Answer Lyrics 17 years ago
Yep, couple getting back together with each other. She thinks he's insincere and that he doesn't really love her, he thinks about her only when she is around. She thinks that, because that's the way SHE is.

He wants her to stop thinking only about herself and to think about him and to show him that she actually loves him and wants him around. But, if she isn't willing to do that, then he doesn't want her around and will point her home.

Barenaked Ladies – You Will Be Waiting Lyrics 17 years ago
She is leaving him because she needs space, her own life. She needs to figure things out on her own.

"And though you say it's not supposed to be me or any entity"

The infamous "I just really need to be by myself right now." line that women give. She is telling him that she doesn't want to be with anyone, it isn't just him. She probably has told him that maybe, sometime down the line, they'll get back together again when she has figured things out.

He's afraid that if he lets her go, she'll never come back. He puts on a brave face: "I don't care if you'll be waiting" in an attempt to support her decision. But, he will be secretly devastated when she goes.

It is sad.

Barenaked Ladies – Life, In A Nutshell Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with colm1225. I've been this guy and that's why this is one of my favorite songs ever.

It's about wanting to be with someone SO much that you'd prefer to be around them constantly. No matter how much you see of them, you only want more. And they are perfect in your eyes. They wouldn't want to change you, because they believe you are perfect the way you are. Even when you want to be by yourself, they respect that: "It's not that easy 'cause my time is often decided for me". I read the line to mean that often the narrator wants to do stuff by himself or for himself, so it isn't easy for her, but she STILL doesn't want to change him. And he's so grateful to have someone so completely understanding and loving.

Your friends tell him that he is too obsessed with someone or that it is a bad idea to get so attached to someone. But he ignores them because he loves her so much.

Barenaked Ladies – Too Little Too Late Lyrics 17 years ago
I've been in this situation before...

Basically, it's about being in a relationship where you are constantly arguing with each other, you go over the same issues over and over again.

She is continually telling him what he's doing wrong, but he never corrects it. He feels she never listens to HIS issues. He finally decides to turn it around and make himself a better person. Finally, moving forward instead of reliving the same arguments: "Record and play, after years of endless rewind"

Unfortunately, he's realized it too late. She'll leave him and there's nothing he can do about it.

Barenaked Ladies – Second Best Lyrics 17 years ago
I know this song has been said by BNL to be about the war. This album was their most politically motivated album and they don't apologize for it.

This is pretty much about the US. About how they are the best and they are letting everyone know it by beating their chest and attacking. The rest of the world isn't impressed by their demonstration.

"If winning is an art
Then it's drawn us apart
When you erased your heart and beat your chest"

Is talking about the rift in relations between the US and Canada because the US seemed to stop caring about people and instead insists of winning to prove their superiority.

Barenaked Ladies – Maybe Katie Lyrics 17 years ago
This is about someone who is having reservations about starting a relationship with a woman because she has a kid and he's a little worried about that.

He's worried about the fact that if he gets involved with a woman who has a kid it will have to be long term. He's going to have to take responsibility for a kid and become a dad.

He thinks it's not worth trying. Pretty much every line in the song is a counter argument to a reason someone would give why they shouldn't date an older woman with a child:

"Do you know everyone you ever swore you'd love for life
I don't know them anymore
I know their names
I'd recognize them on the street and I don't love them"

It is saying that, sure, this woman MAY have said that she loved someone and may have been ready to settle down with them, but you shouldn't think she is a slut or there is something wrong with her. People break up with each other and move on. That's what Katie has done.

But also, you don't have to think of it as a huge responsibility or a big deal. Just take it slowly, get to know her gradually, and if things work out then the kid shouldn't matter. The song also gives the advice that if you really don't think she is the one for you, then don't bother, but you should at least give it a try.

Barenaked Ladies – Stomach Vs. Heart Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is the ago old debate between sex and love. Eating is a metaphor for sex in this song. It's about what happens when you confuse sexual attraction for love.
