Damon Albarn – Hollow Ponds Lyrics | 9 years ago |
This song seems to mark the passing of time with a few snapshots from Damon Albarn's life. The Hollow Ponds are in Leytonstone, London, where Albarn lived as a child. You can still hire boats there. The next line refers to the development of the A12 dual carriageway through Leytonstone, which faced massive protests as it cuts right through the built-up area and prompted a lot of redevelopment, including at the Green Man roundabout. By 1991, when this happened, he had moved on, grown up, and was now seeing that what he remembered as a child had changed completely, which seems to isolate your memories more, and gives the song a haunting quality. There are other references to these changes in the lines about CDs to LCDs, horses to trains, and his own career progression seeing Modern Life Is Rubbish sprayed onto a wall and then using that for the album title which pushed Blur further into the mainstream. |
Spoon – Eddie's Ragga Lyrics | 14 years ago |
New York charm, surely? |
Super Furry Animals – Golden Retriever Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Yeah I'm sure the song really is that straightforwardly literal as that, and with no subtext whatsoever. |
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – La Costa Brava Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"If you look on a map, you will see Girona is West of Iraq" Stunning logic, but Girona and Barcelona are both in Catalonia. I think Ted Leo's talking about a holiday on La Costa Brava in Spain rather than anything to do with the war. The 'frontlines' he's referring to, as other people have already pointed out, is just the stress of dealing with such weighty issues all the time, as he did during the recording of Shake The Sheets. I think when he's talking about drinking beer at a vegetarian cafe on La Costa Brava, he means he'd like to be drinking beer at a vegetarian cafe on La Costa Brava |
John Vanderslice – Promising Actress Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The chimes at the start really remind me of Tank Park Salute by Billy Bragg. I wonder if that's deliberate. |
John Vanderslice – My Family Tree Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Man, I really hate to break it to you like this, but sometimes singers adopt personas in songs that aren't necessarily them. Maybe he's doing so here, and Angela is this sister of his imagined narrator...maybe he isn't actually a helicopter pilot, shooting at people with tracer bullets, as he claims to be in Heated Pool and Bar. Come to think of it, I don't think he was a pharmaceutical rep in Abilene or a P.O.W. in Vietnam either. I think he's a storyteller. |
Fleet Foxes – Ragged Wood Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I thought in the first verse it was 'only son' rather than 'only song', and 'by the fire my young 'un', although it's pretty hard to make out what he's actually singing. |
Fleet Foxes – Your Protector Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I also think it may be: The other one waited for me |
Fleet Foxes – Your Protector Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I'm pretty sure it's not: As you lay tonight.... On the morning.... As that makes no sense. Whoever submitted these lyrics needs a q-tip. |
The National – Friend of Mine Lyrics | 15 years ago |
So someone's just explained what it means, after interviewing the singer who told him, yet you still think you know better? Interesting. |
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – The Anointed One Lyrics | 15 years ago |
heartbeats_xxx, I think that was excellently put and well summed up. Comrade_Pinto, I'm almost certain that Ted Leo isn't saying that he and Ferguson used to be 'red' as in conservative or Republican when they were 19, otherwise Ferguson becoming a right-wing Republican would hardly be a betrayal. It's much more likely that he means red in a socialist/left-leaning way, as this would actually make sense, and fit in with both the song, the feelings of betrayal, and Ted's actual political views now. The 'green' could refer to the pursuit of money (in Ferguson's case), or possibly a focus more on environmental issues (Ted's case, as he is a vegan etc.). But that's not as clear cut. |
The Silver Jews – The Wild Kindness Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"The year ends in an X-ray room" |
Bat for Lashes – Sarah Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Adopting Sarah's heart Was never gonna be easy" "But on the dirty tarmac of... The tarmac of the melting motorway" I think this is a really great song, quite strange though. |
Air – Playground Love Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I'm almost certain the singer in this song is Thomas Mars of Phoenix. Although the album sleeve credits the vocals to 'Gordon Tracks' Phoenix played an acoustic version of it in Sydney earlier this year and introduced it as 'a song we wrote with our friends Air'. It was fantastic. If that is the case, it wouldn't surprise me if it did say 'I feel my body remain tense no matter, I'm on fire...' as the Phoenix singer does pronounce words in a pretty unique way when singing. |
Minus the Bear – Women We Haven't Met Yet Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Drunk swimming, what a good example to set! Good song though, despite the hypothermia/drowning risk attached. |
Minus the Bear – I Lost All My Money at the Cock Fights Lyrics | 17 years ago |
In the demo version (and maybe the album version?): "There's more things interesting than this joint" It doesn't make sense gramatically (or at least it doesn't sound right) but that's what he says. And it should be: "I think she's got the right idea" I love the way the lyrics are so simple, he still gets his point across so well but leaves you to your own mental image. |
Minus the Bear – El Torrente Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Great song, really simple lyrics that are really moving all the same. I think suicide is a likely explanation, it would explain the loss of innocence and the bruises/abrasions (from a rope or whatever). I think it's too easy to argue over the petty things though and miss the general point that he's trying to get across; the songs not just about a crime scene but also its effect on the people working at it. I think it's a really interesting take and subject matter. What does he mean by 'he hoped to live through' though? I guess it means he hopes his daughter lives on longer than this girl, but it sounds like he means he hopes to live longer than his own daughter, which wouldn't make sense. |
