Depeche Mode – Barrel Of A Gun Lyrics

It's about mental instability with vampirical references. And the protagonist is feeling kind of guilty about it, but he doesn't know what the f*ck he did.... |

I think it's about Alan too... this song is mostly guitars/drums - not much keyboard on it - an obvious attack on Alan ;) |

It's an unbalanced relationship where you suffer, because the other person doesn't devote as much as you do.... |

Depeche Mode – Condemnation Lyrics

Martin is using criminal judgement and court ("book in my hand"; "blindness") as an allegory for personal, moral judgement.
It's ambiguous what kind of judgement it is: could be about God, a lover... or anything else. But he claims to be innocent: "If you see purity/As immaturity/Well it's no surprise" |

Depeche Mode – What's Your Name Lyrics

I just don't get why they went so far with it. These lyrics are so stupid and it's obvious they were trying to catch gay fans. There's NOTHING subtle or metaphorical on the entire song. No poetry at all... bad bad lyrics. |

Drugs, God, Girls... pick a subject and it will fit. It's an ambiguous song about pure devotion and reverence - like a cat. |

Yeah, I think it's a gay song. Probably to appeal to their the homosexual audience. Fletch even wore a policeman cap, for God's sake!!! ;) |

Depeche Mode – Satellite Lyrics

The lyrics are about isolating yourself.
I think it's another break up song, as Martin said he broke up with his girlfriend prior to writing for the album and that was an influence to the dark theme of the album... |

Depeche Mode – I Am You Lyrics

I think it's a positive song, as most songs on Exciter were about love.
It's not about fear of being with or losing someone. It's about giving yourself to the other person and being complete. He's just being clever about it.... "I must live with this reality"; "No denying the facts"... etc |

Depeche Mode – It's Called A Heart Lyrics

Alan Wilder's less favourite song.
It's a bit too synth-poppy for that period, between Some Great Reward and Black Celebration, way out of what they were doing, IMHO. |

Depeche Mode – The Dead Of Night Lyrics

It's probably about "teenage wildlife" xD
A glam song for the new millenium. IMHO, it's Martin's version of "Nightclubbing" by Iggy Pop/David Bowie... It's just about going out and stuff. Nightclubbing has some dark elements to it too, such as the line "We walk like a ghost".
Also, both have a triplet-feel to it. I think they're HEAVILY related ;)
And yes, it has guitars on it - it's just buried under reverb and heavy distortion. Watch the live DVD to see how he plays it!!! |

Depeche Mode – Black Day Lyrics

It's an alternate version to Black Celebration. Martin once said it's about sarcasticaly celebratingForgeting all I couldn't do today a day where nothing happens. The line "Forgeting all I couldn't do today" says it all.... |

Depeche Mode – Monument Lyrics

I agree with you, pharmageek. I think it's pretty empty, but it has some early Martin Gore metaphores: the monument is an achievement in life. It's a very pessimistic lyric, actually...
Maybe I'm just getting ahead of myself, but this lyric may be a sign of what he would do in the future, most notably his fixation with religion show a bit on "this kind of praise". |

I think this religious/romantic ambiguity is one of Martin's most distinguishable characteristics. |

Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus Lyrics

tjkerouac is right - it's about Elvis and Priscilla.
It's about an unbalanced relationship - hanging onto someone who's more an idol than a partner to you. A "Personal Jesus". |

Depeche Mode – Black Celebration Lyrics
|
Martin once said it's about a day where nothing happens, a black day, a blank day... It has a sarcastic tone to it, esp. the line "I'll drink to that".
The "a brief period of rejoicing" is producer/label manager Daniel Miller impersonating Winston Churchill... it goes along pretty well with the song. |
