Iron & Wine – Muddy Hymnal Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Isn't it "The righteous suffer and the falling land?" Seems to make more sense, especially given the religious overtones of the song. I&W uses a lot of Christian imagery in his music. Not necessarily a Christina himself, perhaps a student of early German Idealism/Romanticism. |

It's not about sex. It's about rough sex, to the point of rape. |
Sage Francis – Crumble Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Thanks! |
Sage Francis – Crumble Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Tourist makes more sense with the rest of the line, given that he talks about leaving a city. The imagery of that analogy, btw, is beautiful. As a tourist, you only see the beautiful parts of the city, which in turn skews your views of it as something fantastic. If you live there though, you tend to see its flaws. Also, thanks to richardm82 for the rest of the lyrics. Very helpful! |
Sunset Rubdown – I’ll Believe in Anything, You’ll Believe in Anything Lyrics | 12 years ago |
I believe the line is "Wait for the scary day" as opposed to "fight the scary day". |
Sunset Rubdown – A Day In The Graveyard II Lyrics | 12 years ago |
Right at the end, it sounds like he says "badada badada don't bother don't bother don't bother don't bother (etc.)" Am I the only that hears that? |
Sunset Rubdown – Us Ones in Between Lyrics | 12 years ago |
(Sorry if this is repeated) Last part is "She don't know if he's got the wedding ring(s) on / He don't know if she's got the wedding ring(s) on" There's some fantastic imagery to this song. Spencer's lyrical talent is uncanny. |
Modest Mouse – Polar Opposites Lyrics | 12 years ago |
What gets me is how the song is a polar opposite to itself. The lyrics are downright depressing, whereas the song itself is upbeat and catchy. There are layers beyond layers of symbolism here. |
Mimicking Birds – The Loop Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I will give my interpretation at a later date. Just curious: am I the only one who hears Isaac Brock at the beginning of the song? Background vocals, shouts. |
Okkervil River – In A Radio Song Lyrics | 13 years ago |
Come to think of it, it sounds more like this bicycle pump I used to have that was used by stepping on it. The squeaking of it as you pressed down and released, and the release of the air as you stepped off. |
Okkervil River – Get Big Lyrics | 13 years ago |
I love the "ooh ooh ooooh" right after the line "just remember I'm not him". It's actually eargasmic. So is the lady singer's voice. Anyone know her name? |
Okkervil River – In A Radio Song Lyrics | 13 years ago |
What is the sound that sometimes pops up between verses? Sounds like something steam powered... I take the bus a lot, and associate the sound to the giant-ass windshield wipers that use air pressure to work. I dunno, I really like that sound, but the bus windshield wipers are actually really fucking annoying. Strange. |
Modest Mouse – The Waydown Lyrics | 13 years ago |
It's definitely about the drug culture, but I think there are more layers to the song than just that. The theme (going down, gravity, etc.), to me, refers to coming down from a shroom trip. I went on one last September, am probably going to go on another one soon enough as well, and the lyrics of this song seem to describe just that: coming down from that trippy high you get after eating the magic mushrooms. Could be a crash-landing, could be a soft and safe landing.. really depends on the circumstances. |
Tool – Right in Two Lyrics | 13 years ago |
If this is the case, seems more like they're referencing the ever-going war in Palestine, between the Jews and the Muslims there (though there are Jewish Palestinians, and Christian Palestinians too, who get treated just as bad as their Muslim counterparts). Good analysis. |

Modest Mouse – Edit the Sad Parts Lyrics | 14 years ago |
because it's eargasmic? I'll say! |
Modest Mouse – Jesus Christ Was an Only Child Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I haven't yet read all the comments, so if I'm repeating any ideas, my apologies. Has anyone noticed how he talks about dogs running wild, like in Wild Packs of Family Dogs? I think maybe Penny is Isaac's mom or something, because in Wild Packs, he talks about how his family, little by little, got sucked into the religion by the Wild Dogs (preachers, etc.). So I guess, maybe, this means she regrets it (you should hide your kids while the dogs run wild). |
Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I haven't read all the comments on this song, as there are many, so sorry if I'm repeating anything anyone already said. In the last verse, I believe the garden he and his girlfriend/spouse are growing is a child in the latter's womb, which is why he then refers to "the night that the dog had her pups in the pantry" with "blood on the floor" and his mother then "cried 'til the morning," likely because she knew they couldn't take care of so many dogs, or alternatively, because the pups didn't survive. Maybe he's announcing a miscarriage to his mother? If it's the first, I think he also refers to this at the end of the first verse, where he relates his mother being "stern with the girl" who was with him to him breathing through his mother's body, i.e., as a fetus. I think he's kind of warning her, saying she shouldn't be so stern with the carrier of her grandchild, just as she wanted to be treated well when she was pregnant with Sam. I think the rest speaks for itself, more or less. And ode to his mother. Also, the second and third chorus have different "Sons..." lines: Chorus 2: "Sons could be birds, taken broken up to the mountain." Chorus 3: "Sons are like birds, flying always over the mountain." This is also the best song ever. Ever. |
Bright Eyes – Puella Quam Amo Est Pulchra Lyrics | 14 years ago |
"The girl I love is the most beautiful" |
Wolf Parade – Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts Lyrics | 14 years ago |
At the risk of sounding a tad geeky, and perhaps redundant (i.e., if someone else has already posted this -- I'm too lazy to read every post--), the introductory paragraph of the Wiki post on Hungry Ghosts says "A hungry ghost is a ghost that feeds off of human emotions" which to me sounds just like a Dementor from the Harry Potter books. So maybe Spencer was referring to people trying to feed off others' emotions but never being satiated. Or maybe not, since he does point out in that interview that he's talking about hunger and thirst in general. |
Bon Iver – Beach Baby Lyrics | 14 years ago |
You are correct, jkdeadite. And to emphasize your point, Isaac Brock, of Modest Mouse (and Ugly Casanova) fame, is somewhat known for his mistakes when writing up lyrics or even song titles in the booklet or liner notes of the albums he works on. For example, on Building Nothing out of Something, the track entitled "A Life or Arctic Sounds" is misspelled, to instead read "A Life of Artic Sounds" (the "c" is missing). Anyway, this was probably a useless comment, but I figured, why not combine procrastination time with emphasizing someone else's point. Ignoring this comment will not induce hard feelings from its author. |
Cat Power – Willie Deadwilder Lyrics | 15 years ago |
M. Ward plays the guitar in this song. And he is a fantastic guitarist (and singer). His guitar, coupled with Chan Marshall's voice, equals eargasm. |
Okkervil River – Unless It's Kicks Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Actually, Sheff's voice is wonderful. |
Cat Power – Could We Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Sounds like a fling thing to me. Sex buddy or along those lines. But Cat Power makes it, ah, acceptable? I dunno, she makes it more...I can't find the word(s)! Fuck me. But I sure do love Cat Power; what a powerful voice (pun somewhat intended). |
M. Ward – Color of Water Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think it's about the sun. My boy = son; homophone of sun. And all the other imagery; just think about it. Change of seasons and the like. |
Modest Mouse – The Beta Carotene Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I'm pretty sure it's Despite of all the string, and not "perspire", simply because it makes a lot more sense with the saying and the context (stringing someone along...with string; so even though he had a lot of string, he couldn't string this person along). Maybe. |
Modest Mouse – Tundra/Desert Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Yeah I know what you mean, I listen to it whenever I embark on something stressful or what-have-you, like exams and shit. |
Bright Eyes – Tourist Trap Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I also thought this sounded like Lennon's song! In fact, I was just thinking that while reading your post before I got to the end of it. What a strange coincidence (though I don't believe in coincidence). |
Bright Eyes – N'en Parlons Plus Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I'd also highly appreciate it if someone sent me the song. My email is beginning_of_the_end_13@hotmail.com Thanks. |
Bright Eyes – N'en Parlons Plus Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Je crois que les cheveux attachés est une traduction directe des paroles de la chanson-même. I believe the "les cheveux attachés" (your hair attached) is simply to go with that line in the song. |
Bright Eyes – I Believe in Symmetry Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I haven't read all of the comments yet, so sorry if I'm repeating what others have said. Has anyone noticed that I Believe in Symmetry is pretty much right in the middle of the album? It's the 7th track of 12 (you can't have a middle to 12, so the middle is 6 and 7), and it splits the first 25 minutes of the album from the last 25 minutes. Literally, the album is exactly 50 minutes (according to my iTunes) and according to my mathematical calculations, there are 24.9833333333333etc. minutes before the beginning of this track. So it really is symmetrical. Just thought I'd point that out. It's also probably my favourite track, but Easy/Lucky/Free and Time Code are close seconds (and look that that, those are the last and first tracks of the album). I really do believe in symmetry. Damn, Conor is a genius. |
Bright Eyes – I Will Be Grateful for This Day Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This is actually the best interpretation of the song I've read, notably because of your explanation of Elliott's handsome hell. Good on you! |
Bright Eyes – I Will Be Grateful for This Day Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Elliott used a lot of heroin. I'd even go so far as to say that if you converted the amount of heroin he used in his lifetime into food, you could feed all of Ethiopia. He put needles in his arms endlessly, and a lot of his songs refer to that. In the end, though it was the stab wounds that were the cause of death, the drugs were indirectly what killed him. He was clean for a while, then relapsed near the end of his life (listen to King's Crossing...). So it could be about Elliott Smith; I'm not saying it is for sure though. |
Daniel Johnston – Go Lyrics | 15 years ago |
As I wrote on a youtube video featuring this song...if love could be translated into song, this would be the result. |
Bright Eyes – Method Acting Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Am I the only one who thinks the title of this song comes from King's Crossing by Elliott Smith? "The method acting That pays my bills Keeps a fat man feeding In Beverly Hills. I got a heavy metal mouth That yells obscenities, And get my check From a trash treasury Because I took my own insides out." The part after "In Beverly Hills." has nothing to do with my comment, but they're good lyrics :) |
Bon Iver – RE: Stacks Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I believe the black crow is a reference to death, since crows, like vultures, eat carcasses. He is waiting patiently (legs are crossed), perhaps in a condescending manner, with some anticipation. The keys could be a symbol to the gates of Heaven, where one would go after death. Or the keys to death itself. And the fake toss is an attempt at death, but a (perhaps fortunate) failure. So he's losing at life, in some sorts, and he's asking himself what could have possibly led to this. In brief, I'm thinking it has something to do with suicide, but I could be way off. Justin seems the sensitive sort, but I take him to be smarter than suicide. Then again, who hasn't contemplated suicide at some point? Or is that just me... |
Okkervil River – In A Radio Song Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Am I the only who thinks this sounds similar, guitar-wise, to Dust In The Wind (namely in the verses)? |
Daniel Johnston – Never Relaxed Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Hilarious, yet sad for Syd... |
Daniel Johnston – Joy Without Pleasure Lyrics | 15 years ago |
A truth of the world, as told by Daniel Johnston. Genius. |
Daniel Johnston – Peek a Boo Lyrics | 15 years ago |
http://www.allmoviephoto.com/photo/2005_the_devil_and_daniel_johnston_006_big.html This may be the wall of the bar he painted...though I'm assuming he's referring to the bars on the window(s) or door(s) in the asylum... |
Daniel Johnston – Don't Play Cards With Satan Lyrics | 15 years ago |

Daniel Johnston – Peek a Boo Lyrics | 15 years ago |
As if no one has commented on this song yet... It's so honest, and so fucking true, and so goddam real...I know I repeated myself there, but I have to emphasize how real it is. Fucking love this man... Thank God for Daniel Johnston (or perhaps the Devil, right?) |
Damien Rice – Boring Afternoon Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Could not have said it better myself. This is exactly how I'm feeling right now. |
Damien Rice – Beast & Beauty Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I cried at "Oh no my love and lonely friend; how slow are we gonna take this bend; it's a long road with a cold and stoney end. Where do you go to pretend?" The first one, I mean. |
Damien Rice – Silent Night Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I believe 'taking your flight' might be the british/irish expression, meaning to escape. So when he leaves, she falls apart. This is my interpretation, from an experience I had less than a week ago. I told this girl (name of Lisa, coincidentally) how I felt about her; we talked in her car in front of my house for a good two hours or so. When she finally left, I fell apart (when she took flight). I'm now trying to find something to hate about her to get over it...she said she had feelings for me too, but for X amount of reasons it wouldn't work out. She said she had feelings too, perhaps to try to appease me, thinking I'd leave her alone (you found some love for me thinking I'd go). And then I cried to sleep. We were close to begin with, so really, nothing changed...yet it doesn't seem right...I'm all torn up inside... Like I said, I cried, and I should be stronger than that. And she literally drove me home (you should be weaker than sending me home). And I haven't seen her since, so we haven't really talked...so sleep in heavenly peace...I know I won't for a while. Sorry if that was too personal. |
Daniel Johnston – Man at War Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Well, I just wrote these lyrics myself today. It's a great song, and I was surprised not to see it online yet. Anyways, it's pretty obvious (or at least to me) what this song means: The man at war is Daniel, or me, or whoever wants to be; either way, he's at war with no one; simply, he's at war with himself, and perhaps the world, or, an accumulation of both, so one's own world. In any case, it's a hatred or confusion or misunderstanding of the world. Standing in his foxhole is the fact that he's dug himself a hole, kind of like the trenches during WWI, which is made to defend oneself from the enemy, yet known to be a killer (tetanus, etc.). So as a man at war, you're defending yourself from the shitty world, yet you're getting yourself into (different, more, a lot of) shit, with problems in your life and keeping them in, not letting them out. Also, hence the always being on the defensive. Then, out of the blue, during your depression, this girl shows up. You fall in love; but it makes no sense that she's in your life, when she's such a figure of joy and love and happiness, and your life is one of shit and war. And you ask yourself if she loves you, will she understand why you're at war with the world. Well, you got ambushed by the wave of love, but that then shot up your life, because you got crushed by her when she turned you down. But you got over it (rehabilitated); after all, you're a man at war, so you have to get better. Then she missed you, and you're over her. So you're in opposite roles now. She's torn apart from the loss of you; you still miss her though, to a certain extent. Thus, you're blessed and cursed. Anyways, that's how I'm feeling right now. Fucking terrible feeling. God I love Daniel Johnston and thank him for his honesty and deep metaphors. He's helped me so much. I love you Daniel Johnston! Thank you so much! |
Bon Iver – The Wolves (Act I and II) Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I have to say, runghollow, that I love your interpretation of the percussions as a train; and, to lyriclover81, your interpretation of the song is impeccable. |
