Gosh, this song is wonderful! I'm like breaking out in a cold sweat when I listen to it! I agree with shsclassicrocker... "I've all this wonder of earthly plunder will it leave us anything to show" could be about the enviroment, I don't know how big that problem was in the seventies though, I didn't exist then:P |

Love this song, the bassline is awsome!
I belive thet 'A nuclear error, but I have no fear, London is drowning and I live by the river' means that a nuclear war and horrible times are comming, but he dosen't worry becouse London is going to drown and he will be the first to die 'couse he lives by the river? |

I belive this song could be about a love relationship that ended, but that he still loves her. But he didn't face this wile they werw together, he placed her inseconed place, ("love to aim at besides") so she left him. He lied about things (line three) and now when she's gone he wants her back (line two). He took the relationship for grand (man I don't know if that's the word), he didn't think she could acctually leave him, he didn't take everything that serious ("We'll work it out", "forever is right where we were"). Now he knows he will always love her ("never be clean").
I love this song so much it's so beatifull, definatley one of my favourites at "Curtains". |

I love this song... But it is these are the 'fates' I pushed out of the way. I think the first part of the song is about him being confused, until the gods of the city... part.
"I left my body, I left my fate. But it is so hard to keep away now"... About to have left things behind and to want it that way, but still missing it.
"There wasn't anything for me, I always faked my smile" part I think is about being unhappy but don't want to let others know, or having nobady to tell it.
The "careless angels" bit to "I can't see now" is about pain, people hurting him, people that is no good to him. It also could be as jonny17 says, but in that case I don't understand "give me disease" "pain in my neck to feed of me" "shut my eyes and I can't see" parts...

These are the fares I pushed out of my way
Now they've come back here to haunt me
It's plain to see who the winner and loser will be", ha plays a game that he knows how it will end, the things he's got rid of comes back to him. This doesn't have to be bad...
