Ramones – Commando Lyrics

I don't see why Vietnam would be in the news in 1977; the last commando units pulled out in '72.
But regardless, it is "be nice to mommy/don't talk to commies". |

Ramones – Havana Affair Lyrics

Oiroberto, to be fair...
The Cubans who invaded the Bay of Pigs were trained and equipped by the CIA. They were not stabbing their own country in the back, they were counter-backstabbing the communists, who were the original backstabbers. No one in their right minds willingly embraces communism. Cuba was only independent due to American aid in the first place. They have always liked us, for the most part. Castro, Che, etc do not represent what Cuba is about. When a couple of revolutionaries on an island near your country ally with another country threating to destroy you and all of your people, you don't sit there and do nothing. And when those same commies attempt to repress their own people for their own political ends (power, not equality) you give them a hand. Win win. Pretty obvious really.
Great song, too. |

The Animals – We Gotta Get Out Of This Place Lyrics

They used this in HAMBURGER HILL as well.
Keep it mind, aside from the draftees, most Vietnam vets were there because they wanted to be. Remember these were the people who grew up listening to Kennedy about "asking not what their country can do for them, but what they can do for their country."
As a result, you have many people signing on for multiple tours of the RVN. One man, I believe, spent seven straight years there working with the indigenous highlanders. Devotion to the cause was always higher among Special Forces personnel and also Marines...
Awesome song, anyway. |

Billy Joel – Goodnight Saigon Lyrics

Great song, not the most historically accurate. About the only Marines (Parris Island) in Saigon were the embassy guards. Drug use in the Marines was extremely low in comparison to the other branches, also.
I do agree that it's bullshit how vets were treated when they got home. Regardless of what your opinion on politics is, it takes BALLS to get and fight like that. If my opinion matters... I may paraphrase George Orwell, "people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."

PS: the average age of a serviceman in Vietnam was 22-23, not 19 as is commonly quoted |

Yeah, apparently this song was written by a Fred Weismantel.
He's definitely saying 'cept for my big 10", those who disagree are just hearing what they want to hear. |

This one isn't part of Lifehouse, just a single from that era.
Pete wrote this in response to all the music magazines at the time commenting on his personal life. |

The Who – Eyesight to the Blind (The Hawker) Lyrics

Nope, it was Sonny Boy Williamson in 1948. Mose Allison covered it again in 1958 or '59, and changed the lyrics slightly.
The Who covered it again, using Mose Allison's minorly changed lyrics as a base, then changing it some more to suit the feel of Tommy. |

Destructo and Audiorage, you're completely and utterly missing the point.
It's supposed to be like you're on drugs. Psychedelic drugs. Which aren't supposed to make sense.
Fucking duh. |

AC/DC – Sin City Lyrics
|
Yeah, AC/DC is about as metal as Elvis. Even the Tommy-era Who are more metal than them, with the insane distortion, noise levels, screaching vocals by Roger and classic death-metal growl by John. Boy, I love the Who.
Anyway, yeah, as said, AC/DC never has claimed to be metal, quite the opposite actually. They're a got the hard rock riffwork of the Kinks with the bluesier lead stuff like anyone who was in the Yardbirds. Great band.
Also, RIP Rock n Roll 1951-80. '51 because that's the first time the phrase "rock n roll" was used to describe a musical genre, and '80 since that's when Bon Scott died. |

The BJ spazzing part would actually be a good tribute to the original... the Who were a spazzy band.
For any who may think the GD version is better, pick up Live at Leeds, turn the volume to 12, and sit there and listen for 15 minutes straight and tell me Billie Joe is a better guitarist than Townshend, Mike is a better bassman than Thunderfingers (who has been named best bassman EVER numerous times), and tell me Tre is a better drummer than Moon the Loon. |

The Who – 1921 Lyrics

Yeah, the 1951 switch in the movie Tomym makes more sense. On the album it states Sally Simpson married a rock star from California, but assuming she is 14ish in 1930, then by the time there were any rock stars to marry she'd be like 45-50ish... it is possible, but highly improbable. |

Actually, I have a playlist of this on youtube... live at the Isle of Wight '69, in London c. Dec '69, at the Tanglewood Music Shed July of '70, the Isle of Wight '70, again in '74, and finally in Chicago in '79. I also have 2 or 3 covers included. Too bad there ain't video footaage of the Leeds version- but that one is a bit clean for me anyway. |

James Blunt – You're Beautiful Lyrics

About 7 or 8 months ago my dad and I were driving in San Diego County at night in his car when this song came on the radio.
I was sore for the next week. I jumped out of the car 30 seconds in. I'm sure it's a great song, but unlike another emotional song, LOVE AIN'T FOR KEEPING, it's too... sissy in the way it's played. Maybe if he had Leslie West playing lead guitar and revived Kieth Moon for the dead for drums it would be better. |
