Dredg – Quotes Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is obviously about tripping, in this case probably acid. In fact, lots of Dredg stuff references psychedelics. I don't think religion even factors in here.

The first verse is convincing a skeptical person to just take the drugs, the second verse is about avoiding a social-situation bad trip. The key to psychedelics is remembering that your brain will lie to you as well as reveal incredible truths, this song sums that idea up.

And the reason that the second verse describes social anxiety so well is because having a social panic attack while tripping is an extreme temporary version of social anxiety.

Sarah McLachlan – Possession Lyrics 16 years ago
I liked this song for a while, hearing both cover versions I could find (Type O Negative as mentioned, and new rock band Evans Blue - believe it or not). I listened to it after understanding the (lack of) relationship I have with a particular female, and the whole song came to me at once. I actually cried.

Yes, I know its output from Sarah about a stalker, but I'm allowed to have my own interpretation, right?

Mine is this: not necessarily complete obsession, but the feeling of being possessed by the other even though that person does not know it. This woman fascinates me with every move and every look, and without noticing it I began to build up what we 'might have'. Parts of the lines include "you speak to me in riddles..." and "from across the great divide" which to me says that I cannot understand her words fully because I'm not listening for a message - just the voice. Also, the lines "the night is my companion" and "it's morning that I dread" say 'I feel best about you when my dreams can play as they like'. I didn't see it as deadly attraction or stalker-ish obsession, just internal and external struggle to 'get it out' the right way to the other person how the singer feels.

I was also one of those guys who never had a girlfriend and nobody knew why. I read over the lyrics in this song and compare them to my whole high school and early college period, and it makes glorious sense. In this case, the whole set of lyrics is sung from inside a dream. There wasn't a real person who is the object, but rather a dreamed-up person who is completely fantastic and 'perfect' for the dreamer (hey, it's a dream, right?), and only available through dreams. I actually had a 'person' like this once, so I understand it in this parallel too.

Aside from the lyrical interpretations, awesome song, with gloriously imagined melody and harmony (especially) - makes me wonder who else sang with Sarah on the album version of the song. The verse chords are the same as another great love song, "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaac (Bm, A, E) and lend the song a very powerful sense of haunt.

Audioslave – Shadow On The Sun Lyrics 16 years ago
There is definitely a specific meaning Chris is alluding to. But he's enigmatic as ever, and it's difficult to decode.

In the first verse I imagine him singing about being an external and invisible observer of the good and bad (mostly bad) of everyone's life. He has a rather jaded and cynical, yet self-conceived-as-wise opinion of all things, and offers his pessimistic dogma freely to others. Perhaps in the first verse he's playing the part of God, addressing one of his believers.

The second verse is perhaps the grief and sorrow of one who lost a close loved one, and is unable to make peace with the death.

Perhaps the lyrics in the interlude refer to a schitsophrenic (s?) or someone struggling with some other mental disorder. "Every drop of flame" being a memory trigger for a relapse into such a disorder (as in "A Beautiful Mind").

Thus I conclude: throughout Chris sings the thoughts of several different people in several different states of mental anguish or emotional unrest, all of whom feel alone in the world.

One of the greatest singers in rock history. One of the greatest albums he worked on. One of the greatest songs made by this great band.

Filter – Hey Man, Nice Shot Lyrics 16 years ago
I always imagined that the song was about a hypothetical disgruntled cubicle worker coming to work with a gun a-la-Dane Cook's skit, also reminescent of "Office Space". The lyrics kinda apply to this theory. It's just the idea I've always carried in my head while listening to this amazing song.

Very powerful, despite any confusion over lyrics.

Filter – Skinny Lyrics 16 years ago
The connection to eating disorders is very obvious, especially since the title is "Skinny".

I like these lines especially: "Every sin is their seamless smile" - seamless smile because there's no fat to make seams or dimples; and "At least you will not die" - the rationalization against not being fat and possibly dying from obesity-related illness. Just found these lines interesting since (irrationally powerful) fear of obesity is usually the primary underlying cause of an eating disorder.

But initially, I picked up that he was singing about a terminal hypocrite. It only party applies, though.

Filter – The Best Things Lyrics 16 years ago
Great song with a trippy chorus chord progression. One of my faves.

I think its about a self-esteem or motivation-free instinct slave becoming aware of himself (yet doing nothing...). I say this from experience, being that I once had no motivation or self esteem (ah, middle and high school).

The instinct slave comes from the metaphor for breaking the law - "No cop, no stop, I don't care" - that comes from a lack of self value, as well as the "...no thought, I don't care" line. The law breaking could be in the metaphor of running a red light, or more than that, IE drug use, indiscriminate drinking, adrenaline thrills, etc. He's also Godless.

Possibly he's aware that he'll never change?

Filter – Cancer Lyrics 16 years ago
"Scum of the earth - I am humanity"

that about sums this one up. He's singing as a self-realized and cynical (and possibly insanely pleased with itself) race of self-absorbed ravagers of a planet.

Truth: since humanity has risen, the earth has undergone a type of transformation it has never undertaken. The entity that is singing is cynical, ignorant, and negligent of the way ecology had developed in balance before.

Kitsune's reference to "The Matrix"'s Smith's monologue was the first thing that came to me.

Irony in the matrix: didn't the robot race do exactly the same? Just remembering the completeness of the artificial ground cover they had built, as evident in Revolution.

Unwritten Law – Seein' Red Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is one of my top 10 ever, and I don't like mainstream. That should tell you something.

My interpretation is similar to Fallothelederdwn's, but deals with partying and vices as a lifestyle, not just drug addiction.

This song (to me) is without a doubt about a guy and a girl (isn't every song?). It applies to my situation, and all the lyrics fit pretty well.

There's this girl, who I've been involved with off and on for years (back in high school). We have great chemistry, lots of things in common, similar values, etc. and we think the same way. Pretty much perfect, for all intensive purposes. But she lacks maturity, and she seems like the can't make up her mind on whether she wants to continue her partying, carefree, futureless lifestyle, or if she wants to try to be virtuous and take things slow. If she really tries to take it the smart way, I would be there for her, but until then I don't wanna deal with it.

"So follow the leader down, and swallow your pride an d drown" refers to the forget-the-future (even though your gut tells you otherwise) outlook

"When there's no place left to go, maybe that's when you will know" and "I don't know where I'll be when you come around" refers to (in this situation) me, and how I'll try to be there for her when she 'comes around'

"Don't think you'll ever see my face again" - don't think she'll ever change

"Don't have much time for sympathy, 'cause it never happened to me" and "I think you bit off more than you could chew" - I've never had to deal with the huge internal strugle she has

"And foolish lies, well can't you see I've tried to compromise, 'cause what you say ain't always true, and I can see the tears in your eyes" - she's tried to put me away (immaturely) several times, and I've tried to see it her way once, since I know that what she tells me and what she means are completely different (hence the 'tears in the eyes')

"And what you said now, can't stop the words from runnin' through my head, and what I'd do to get through to you, but you'd only do it again" - I can't stop puzzling over what she really means with her spiteful words (or lack thereof), and I would do anything to have a true heart to heart, but she won't let that happen, and she'll only go back to her old ways every time

"And now it's time to make a choice, and all I wanna hear is your voice..." - I want the peace of mind to either drop it or keep her with me, and I really want the latter

everytime I hear this song, I think of her and what home is supposed to feel like, and the soothing guitar in the verses calms my nerves lots. Amazing song, my fave of theirs by far.

Alter Bridge – Find The Real Lyrics 16 years ago
Amazing, plodding hard metal riffs. mmm tasty. Not to mention some insane guitaring by the man Tremonti, perhaps the most talented major recording guitarist today (the shreds hanging off each lyrical section in each chorus are simply drool-worthy). So is Kennedy's end note (wow that man has a voice! he's in the league of greats like c. cornell, w. staley, and e. vedder)

The lyrics in this song make me think about one trying to seperate himself from former wrong-doings and start a new life, fearing that the way of life the writer has been living will soon destroy him. in other words, not so much "I wanna turn over a new leaf", but more like "I NEED to turn over a new TREE in order to LIVE". He expresses a (religious or not, you decide) need to be redeemed, as if his life really does count on it.

New Order – Blue Monday Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with doctordeath, but i find this song to have specifically applicable (you can allpy it to more than one occasion or event).

There's this girl who is a complete enigma to me. we have great chemistry, etc., but i cannot understand her. somehow cant let go of her, even though she is definitely not for me, and i fully understand this.

the song's lyrics (in my interpretation) go as follows:

the whole song is a dialogue of internal conflict inside the storyteller's mind that occurs at the end of some kind of difficult and tedious relationship (not just a romantic one, though romantic relationships tend to be the most emotionally taxing). the beginning of the song gives some background about how the other person 'possessed' him/her when they met. the rest of the first verse expresses how the storyteller cannot come to grips with this strange relationship, and cannot control it/feels at the mercy of the other.

the second verse tells of how the storyteller knows of the history of the person he speaks of - pleasure-driven/use and abuse relationships with others - and thinks that he/she is falling into the same pattern, even though he/she understands what is the best thing for them to do (leave!)

verse 3 is toughie. my interpretation would have to be strictly metaphoric, and i can't pull it up right now...

last verse: the storyteller "stand here waiting" for what he/she thinks is a solution that wouldn't be too hard. but cant find it. he tells the other to leave them for good, but the other follows (and perhaps feels the same way). the last line is a direct question to the other about how it feels to have the tables turned.

my 1 1/2 cents

Incubus – The Warmth Lyrics 17 years ago
a simply fucking awesome song. so pretty, with a good bit of building dynamics (the last chorus). I especially love teh bit where the overdriven guitar plays the guitar melody line during the last chorus, cuz it fits so well with every other instrument. Obviously, the message is simple and powerful.

But i see it in some more detail than some:

"I'd like to close my eyes; go numb
but there's a cold wind coming from
the top of the highest highrise today"
He wants to escape from a monotonous overborne life, but the assholes of big commerce prohibit him (where is the CEO's office? the top of the highrises)
"It's not a breeze 'cuz it blows hard
and it wants me to discard
the humanity I know; watch the warmth bow away"
He takes a lot ofshit, and the slingers of that shit want him to conform
"So don't let the world bring you down
not everyone here is that fucked up and cold
remember why you came and while your alive
experience the warmth before you grow old"
The first chorus is him talking to himself, or rather preaching and self-assuring
"Do you think I should adhere
to that pressing new frontier,
and leave in my wake a trail of fear?
Or should I hold my head up high,
and throw a wrench in spokes by,
leaving the air behind me clear?"
Then he asks a friend, perhaps, if he should break out of the mold and throw everyone off, or if he should suck it up and be 'fucked up and cold' like everyone else seems to be by destroying others' lives and leave the way clear for other fucked up souls.
The second chorus is a preaching from the friend to the narrator, perhaps, or a preaching from the narrator to the listeners.
The third reprise of the chorus is a loud and clear declaration of the narrator's intent - to not be a dickhead - as well as words of advice to the listeners.
My p.o.v.
Guess I'm long winded too.

Audioslave – The Last Remaining Light Lyrics 17 years ago
The basic meaning of this song can be described with two words:

"THE END"

Other than it being the last song on the album, it definitely is about something ending soon - "last Remaining Light" - duh, and possibly an apocalyptic-type scenario. The idea of needing hope is also with many merits, in a very morals-based idea, including the Christian tie-ins, but not necessarily a 'if you don't Believe, then all you have after life is death' type thing. I was thinking more along the lines of 'have hope and hope will find you', which is a very Christian thing to do. And i do believe the second verse is about smoking tobacco, or perhaps in some way weed, to relieve stress.

Always thot that a great way to make a music video is having some guys smokin cigars/cigarettes standing in the middle of the golden gate bridge looking out towards the sunset, with lots of reds and oranges and yellows for the apocalyptic feel.

Audioslave – Shadow On The Sun Lyrics 17 years ago
Occams_Harmony took the words out of my mouth. Albiet months before I said them. The narrator/singer/in all probability Chris goes into how he vaguely remembers a promising future, but the actions/circumstances around him lead him to be a very sad, jaded, meaningless person who is eager to share his knowledge on how to go down (or how to avoid it), and knows much about the why and how of (and theoreticaly sympathizes with) the turning of good people into evil people. And a shadow on the sun is a shadow, not a silohuette. In order for a shadow to be cast on the sun, either something much brighter than the sun must be near it, or something must happen to make the sun much darker, and there still has to be a light source to cast the shadow (as well as an object to have the shadow cast). He calls himself the shadow on the sun, meaning he's reached a state of mind that anyone should be able to achieve, a paradox, an impossibility almost.

This is also my fave audioslave song, and the best composed on the first album easily. The solo in The Civilian Project version (coulda been the name of the band!) that can be heard on Collateral, is a fairly simple, yet wonderfully executed piece of music.

btw Morello writes almost all of his solos down as little mini-pieces.

Audioslave – Visions Turn to Gold Lyrics 17 years ago
This song was actually part of a very early compilation of songs done by teh band under the name (and album title) of "The Civilian Project". Kinda wierd, eh? It includes We Got the Whip, an alternate version of half the songs on the 'Audioslave' album (Gasoline, Bring 'Em Back Alive, Shadow on the Sun - the version on 'Collateral's soundtrack and a MUUUUUCCCCCCHHHH cooler solo, the single version of Like A Stone which is different from the world release album version, Cochise, and Near as I Can Figure (a.k.a. Show Me How To Live, with different chorus lyrics), and this song of course. I can't actually find teh album. Think it was only sold in Australia.

Anyways, the meaning:

I think it's a sarcastic 'i wish your life was nicer to you' kind of thing. Sarcasm being in the middle of the second verse -- "sure as life a rose could blush just from your smiling, and a waterfall would cry" - roses are already blushing, and waterfalls already cry. May mean that the person he's singing to is butt-ugly. He's obviously speaking about a person nobody notices, or even wants to - "terrified the world will never turn to look at you, and the sun won't see you shine", and wants to see this person be happier, sarcastic or not.

I read somewhere that this song is actually about Chris meeting and eventually falling in love with his current wife. I do a LOT of reading about the band, so i cant place where, kinda like my comment on Doesn't Remind Me. But the falling in love with his current wife idea explains the whole song pretty well. Second fave song on the album, next to YTHC.

yea cover of song by one of the defining funk bands of the 70s, Funkadelic. They also did "Shit, Damn, Get Off Your Ass and Jam!", which was covered recently in the form of hip hop. Interesting spread of influence there.

and i cant find a decent recording of this song anywhere. It's not a B-side, it was only done live, like 7 Nation Army and Techno Ted.

Audioslave – Sound of a Gun Lyrics 17 years ago
Probly the most like any of their first album's songs (my fave album of theirs) in sound and feel. Also my fave song on the album, next to Jewel of the Summertime. The first time i heard it, the pick up at the intro, I immediatey cranked up the volume and proceeded to drive like a complete badass for the entirety of the song; this song is so rockin! Oh that signature Tom/Tim/Brad riff feel!

The political feel - very evident in some of the songs - is also apparent here. And I thoroughly agree with The Serene Man. The world has changed much in the last 20 or 30 years (when Chris was a kid), and the addition of terrorism to the mix as major world issue shows obvious in this song.

Audioslave – Doesn't Remind Me Lyrics 17 years ago
I can't remember where it was i read this, but i think it was official (quotes from an interview, etc.), but the song was made - concept to recording - within a day. The band was meeting for practice/recording one day making the album. Morello was toying with some chord progressions (both the verse and the chorus, but not the interlude), and then Timmy C and Wilk started to fill in. In the middle of this fiddling, Cornell came in (late) and walked up to the mic and started singing the first verse. The chorus was played on the fly. Now THAT'S some band chemistry! Cornell later said that he walked in and started singing about what the song made him think of.

The song is probly mostly about (if not entirely) trying to voluntarily forget old memories that bring up negative feelings, and making new ones that he hopes will not turn into bad-feeling reminders. He also sings about trying to keep his life simple -- "I don't wanna learn what I'll need to forget" -- and turning his life around -- "...The things I've held sacred that I've dropped; I won't lie no more, you can bet..."

There are also some definitatively Christian references in the song, though Cornell makes no attempt to let them be positive or negative (some of you guys seem to wanna take sides). I'd prefer to think positive, since Cornell is a Christian, but he has a way of making most of his religious points in an indirect way (unlike the great majority of declaredly Christian bands out today, who use the words 'God' and 'praise' like Fred Durst uses 'f***' - this drives me nuts, like all Christianity is about is shoving it down your throat), thus leaving it open to interpretation, which promotes thinking about it, the direct opposite of the gospel groups. This applies to every Audioslave song with the exception of "Light My Way", which is a prayer. Notice how he will never use the word 'God' in any of his songs?

my two cents...

Audioslave – Light My Way Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song was intended to be easy to comprehend. Chris does have a tendency to make some wierd statements and intend some very unusual messages, this one's pretty straightforward, not much interpretation to be done, except in the metaphor of the bullet (which he defines in teh song anyway) and 'dawn of the dying day', being either his roots or some hope to make amends and begin anew.

Audioslave – Hypnotize Lyrics 17 years ago
I know its not an Audioslave kind of theme here, but i'm feelin "mafia". Kind of reminds me of "Bulls On Parade", which also partains to the mafia.

My more realistic approach (even tho this song is tough to interpret):
Perhaps its about Chris trying to help someone filthy rich from gettin killed by angry poor people, or jealous less-rich people, but is asking fr some money/stuff in return. Or, more probably, Chris is the spokesman of the poor/jealous, and is sending the point across to "give up some money or give up your life".

Audioslave – Exploder Lyrics 17 years ago
Im gonna agree with RandomDude020. The chorus is pretty clearly about typical human short-sightedness. The Verses can be grasped in many different ways tho. The first one is the toughest. Cornell is my fave singer, and i've listened to most of his stuff, but i still cant get a full grasp on what it is he's trying to say most of the time. Perhaps he means, in saying "I could understand" at the end, he means he came to the conclusion that he speaks in the verse. The man (who's probably in prison) is still happy nonetheless cuz he has the state of mind Chris explains

Second verse is pretty easy to get. First the chain-reaction effect of suicide. Father kills himself, daughter cant live like that, and decides to take the 'easy way out', not realizing that she'll just cause more pain around her. Then a psychotic boy who hides his psychosis pretty well (he obviously isnt treated, probably because of the lack of awareness of his family) lets his anger build up inside of him until he explodes on his unwitting mother.

The last verse is also pretty deep. Maybe he's illustrating the tough time he's having getting himself to break out of the mold, and in the process kills his old personality (?).

this is the song im going to die to. when im old and senile of course, in a ridiculously fast and awesome car wreck. another level to see it is 'get me to heaven or hell or somewhere not here' by ending it all, thus depression. Obviously about boredom with life.

And man o man, Chris is easily the greatest living rock singer. He used to be better, back before too much screaming toasted his voice. This album is the one where his voice sounds the best IMO. In soundgarden he was too shrieky, and more recently his voice sounds too old.

On top of that, Morello might be the best guitarist currently in a high-grossing band. Atleast one of the top 5. And ya cant forget Commerford and Wilk, 2 more of the greatest musicians currently playing in any band. My fave band.

Deftones – Street Carp Lyrics 17 years ago
once again here i go with the drugs (appropriate considering the album title).

being that chino writes about infatuation a lot (not love, too much), i just assume that he meets someone somewhere (on a street, in a bar, where ever) that he used to be infatuated with. she has changed. a lot. now she uses hard hallucinogens regularly -- "who snaps at the walls and pulls meat down" is screaming 'acid' -- (plus MDMA for the added emotional instability), and there is almost nothing left of the girl he once knew. distraught by the woman who's hardly human who has changed so much, he tries to get away from her without offending her for fear (the snapping and the teeth, etc.) that she'd freak out and hurt him bad or kill him. he's uneasy the whole time (thus the 'ohh...' when he's stating his 'address'), and he's very eager to end the situatioon -- "So write it down. now did you get it? get it." and "here's all your evidence, take it home and run/fuck with it".

IMO. great song tho. wierd time signature and contrasting dissonant riffs. Deftones are exceedingly good at making music like this.

this song makes me think drug addiction running rampant.

chino (or the character of the singer) finds a girl he likes a lot and wants everything to stop changing, cuz its perfect as-is. then he professes to ignoring abuse (emotional probably)

then they trip out together: "stop to rest on the moon" since they've been everywhere else in the universe (mentally, and physically too), "then we'll make a fire" - have sex or some sensual or sexual interchange, duh. "i'll steal a carcass for you, and feed off the virus" - they're trippin. he's sayin he would do something unreasonably wierd and dangerous for her (probably blindly without any thot). "feed off the virus" probly means do more drugs. which ones i dont feel at liberty to say.

Then on some summer day in june, they're trippin, and she OD's and turns blue (like a suffocating baby with a non-perforated mucus plug in its mouth - kinda sick), and then he ODs out of fear and pain. meanwhile he's totally ok with bein addicted to hard drugs cuz he's with this girl.

and does chino scream 'fuck 'em!' just before verse 3? i think he does, but i cant tell.

and if its porteguese or spanish (or any romantic language 'cept french) it would be pronounced fay-tih-SYER-uh or maybe fay-tih-SEE-er-uh
