Corinne Bailey Rae – I'd Do It All Again Lyrics 8 years ago
It's definitely about her husband. According to wikipedia, many of the songs from The Sea were written before her husband's untimely death. This song is particularly telling of their relationship. She seems like a centered person and very meek, but her husband always seemed troubled – probably due to his drug and alcohol use.

I think the comments before mine are accurate with the addition of "You did it all again, you broke another skin" leans towards his drug use (needles). I don't know what drugs he took, but that's what those lines reminded me of.

Ryan Adams – Wonderwall (Oasis cover) Lyrics 8 years ago
In terms of the Ryan Adams version, he included it on his Love Is Hell album, which largely in response to a past girlfriend who was dying of cancer. So with that in mind, I totally get the meaning of this song. Whether Oasis meant it this way or not is lost on me.

Basically, the song is about a guy who is losing his love who meant everything to him. And he's wondering "how am I going to survive without you." But I feel the song goes deeper than that with the bridge stating profound things like "And all the roads we have to walk along are winding / And all the lights that lead us there are blinding."

I those lines are included because when you're losing something that means the world to you, you ask yourself huge questions like "Where is my life going without this great person in it? What will happen to me? What will happen to her/him?" Especially if it's been believed that the couple were a match made.

I like the Oasis original. But I love RA's version.

Joseph Arthur – Honey And The Moon Lyrics 8 years ago
I think everyone's suggestions about the song's meanings are close. But...

I believe the song is from Joseph's POV. He met someone that he's fallen in love with, however, it's just not or hasn't been the right time to be together. Why? The song suggests that's *he's* afraid to fall in love. Maybe he hasn't had good experience with allowing himself to be free (without fear) with someone.

I think he's afraid to be with this person even though he knows he shouldn't be. Fear is irrational and can weight you down and hold you back from experiencing beautiful, awesome things. I think that's what he means about the "shores of freedom". A life without fear of love *is* freedom.

Also, on the "all you want is wrong" line: I think he means the other's persons wants are right BUT the *timing* is wrong.

Other songs on his album this song is featured on suggests that he eventually leaves this person (he gives up) because he's not ready to be in love or open himself up to love.

Fleet Foxes – Grown Ocean Lyrics 8 years ago
I don't really know what the song is about, but when I heard it, I had the most profound sense of awakening. Simply the way I saw the world when I was a kid, just came back to me. As you get older things get less foggy and more contrasted, all the colors turn to black and white. Robin's playful singing and the urgency of the percussion and drums, the helpful guiding of the backing vocals just reminds me seeing the world as a big playground and dancing with the wind.

"I know someday the smoke will all burn off
All these voices I'll someday have turned off
I will see you someday when I've woken
I'll be so happy just to have spoken
I'll have so much to tell you about it"

But I will tell you that this album was powerful enough to make Robin's wife/girlfriend come back to him (see Wikipedia). I bought it just for this song.

The song may have been written to a lover, but my own personal interpretation is it's written to a past self that used to dream with abandon.

Gorillaz – To Binge Lyrics 9 years ago
From my interpretation, the song is about two people who were in a relationship and still love each other. One of them is at fault for the end of their relationship the previous time, while the other who gave it their all just can't seem to get it up (proverbially, love-wise). That person may still care a great deal about the other, but "it just takes so much these days."

The other layer to this song, which everyone has hinted at with mentions of plastic. Is that, like on "Empire Ants," Yumi's character represents the playful, surrealistic, possibly the plastic/toy world aspect of the song. While 2D's character represents the real-time, more realistic aspect of the situation.

"My heart is an economy, due to this autonomy
Rolling in and caught again"

He's making money with songs from his loneliness (and/or the feeling that he has to be on his own because his lover can't reciprocate her former feelings).

"Rolling in and caught again" is repeated one last time, which means it's important obviously. I think the answer to why it's so important can be found from the first time it was mentioned. :]

Expounding on dpm911's comment... The mention actually appears at the end of the song. If you listen closely you hear the sea and seagulls squawking. The mention is sounds not lyrics.

Neko Case – People Got A Lotta Nerve Lyrics 10 years ago
The song is called "People Got A Lotta Nerve" not "People Got A Lot Of Nerve".

I'm trying to figure out why it's called that. There's no mention of the title in the song.

John Mayer – Clarity Lyrics 10 years ago
I think it's about a summer love, of which he's been thinking too much about whether it will last or not. The moment of clarity is about him realizing that he should just enjoy it. Sometimes relationships aren't meant to last but they still teach us valuable things about ourselves and life in general. "He is here now, she is here now" -- enjoy the now, don't worry about the future.

The Dø – Stay (Just A Little Bit More) Lyrics 10 years ago
Wow. This will be me in a few years. This song couldn't have come at a better time. My boyfriend is very much like the boy she's talking about: kind, polite, sound and sublime. But neglectful and unavailable. I have choose to stay or go. I know what I have to do, but all I want is to stay just a little bit more.

Radiohead – House of Cards Lyrics 11 years ago
I think this song and All I Need are related.

What I think (to make it more general) is that about two people. One has reservations, the other just wants to be free to love. Come what may. And he's telling the other to forget about your worries and let's do love.

As far as the addition of the "denial" lines, I think it's implying that the reserved person knows the other is great person, that he can be trusted, that the love (romantic and/or platonic) is there, but is ignoring it. Denial.

Greg Laswell – High and Low Lyrics 12 years ago
Greg Laswell was on NPR a couple of years ago and it was stated that the album this song is featured on (Through Toledo) mainly deals with his reaction to his wife deciding to leave him out of the blue.

I heard the beautiful melody and sadness of this song on Smallville and had to know about it.

I agree with Bubblegirl777 on the babies thing. Everybody knows they would be good together, even him. For some reason she's not convinced or hung up on something else.

I identify with this song so much. Poor guy (poor me).

I agree with xxlilyblackxx. When I first heard it, it reminded me a lot about a relationship I had.

The two are having a great time, but he wants to end it. She's confused but she goes along with it 'cause she can't make him stay.

I know when I broke up with my ex, I started sleeping with the TV on 'cause I couldn't sleep without thinking about him.

Phoenix – If I Ever Feel Better Lyrics 12 years ago
When I heard "Run Run Run" by Phoenix, I thought they were an "eh" band. And then I heard this song on someone's profile, and I feel the love starting to grow.

I caught this song at the tail end of my own experience of what the song is about (heartbreak and trying to get out of it). All through my experience I tried talking to other people about it, but no one could help. When I heard this song, it was like "Finally, someone understands."

Keane – The Frog Prince Lyrics 12 years ago
This is my favorite song from Under the Iron Sea. It's one of my theme songs. I really like the first stanza, and especially the "the simple heart will be prized again" line. This should be like an anthem for all the nice guys in the world. Not that we're frog princes, but we're princes that go unappreciated a lot.

Modest Mouse – Little Motel Lyrics 13 years ago
It's definitely the World At Large of this album.

It may just as well be about death, but I tend to find a relation with my personal situation: lovers who know they love each other and want to be together but for some (stupid) reason they're wasting time being sad and alone. What are they waiting for?

I think this song is about a homicide; a stripper got killed by either him (his alterego named Lee) or an actual look-alike brother named Lee.

Agreed. I jam to this song a lot, but it's kinda gross. :\

And then they rub it in your face"

Doves – There Goes The Fear Lyrics 13 years ago
Lauren's theory is probably the most accurate IMO. For me, the song is about coming out of a period of fear about losing someone. At some point you think to yourself about someone "Well, go on if you gotta go, but don't look back when you keep running into walls and can't find your way out."

This could be a love triangle song.

Landon Pigg – Perfectionist Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm pretty sure it's "pleasures and pain".

I know someone who's a hardcore perfectionist. Stays up until the wee hours of the morning trying to get it right, while neglecting opportunities to experience life - happiness with another person and so forth. It's really sad to watch.

Björk – All Is Full of Love Lyrics 13 years ago
sumeragi_slut - very well said. I very much agree. Most of the comments vary a little, but all stem from their experience with the song. The song is about whatever you think it's about - no right or wrong answer.

For me, the song is about my experience with love. When I'm presented with the opportunity to give someone love, I give without end. That's what you're supposed to do (love without end, amen). But sometimes, for some odd reason, some people don't want that. So you have to believe that there will come a day someone -will- want that and give it back.

I think that's part of the reason why so many people get divorces and break-up and fight and all that - because they don't believe in the bond they have. It means something - it means a lot. There are so many cliche sayings and what-not like love being worth more than gold. That's cheesy but it really is. Because in all honesty, the only thing on this earth you will have when you die is yourself. Love is the only other thing you can take with you, or at least the knowledge that someone loves you. *All is full of love*

Jason Mraz – Mr. Curiosity Lyrics 13 years ago
I recalled this song after going through a break up with someone that couldn't be in a relationship with me anymore because things in his life were changing dramatically and love had to be put on the backburner. Unfortunately, the only sound reason for it was the timing just wasn't right.

I think that's what Mraz is talking about especially in the last stanza: that love is everywhere but it's hard to find, and when you find it, it has to be just right to pick it. Otherwise, things don't work; they fall apart.

In that situation you tend to be hopeful ("if not that person, then maybe The One is still out there somewhere"). In that case, I'm curious - when and where will I meet them?

That's what I hear, anyway.

Wow, I included this on a mixtape for friends with songs about water, peace, and light without even knowing what it meant or what Jonsi was saying. Just goes to show how great they are at portraying emotion with sound.
