The Beach Boys – Help Me, Rhonda Lyrics 15 years ago
Such a great song, definitely an all-time classic. So yeah, some girl decides that she'd rather try out some other guy and leaves this guy just standing there. He hasn't been able to cope with the shock until finally one day he sees Rhonda (who could technically be a beautiful car, but I think it's supposed to be a real girl, tho cars are far safer). He's now hoping that Rhonda and him will hit it off and he'll be even happier.
Like I said, this song is awesome... but there are 2 versions so be careful. The not-so-good one has too much echo chamber and the sound purposely goes up and down during the chorus.

The Beach Boys – Hawaii Lyrics 15 years ago
This is a pretty good classic Beach Boys song that was never a single (as far as I know) so it's remained obscure. It's from the middle of the 'Surfer Girl' album, which is one of their best. Anyone with space on their Beach Boys playlist should include this one. "Hawaii" was kind of re-worked later in the Beach Boys career and became the equally-unknown but still good "Kona Coast" (and it's Christmas version "Mele Kalikimaka")

The Beach Boys – Under the Boardwalk (The Drifters cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
This is one of the good songs on 'Summer In Paradise'. It's obviously a cover, but Mike Love added some extra lyrics that were surprisingly not ridiculously stupid. It also sounds totally different. It's kind of a lazy, laid-back summer evening feel. I think it all works pretty well and it should be on a Beach Boys playlist.

The Beach Boys – Island Fever Lyrics 15 years ago
Actually one of the better songs on its album, 'Summer In Paradise', this song somehow manages to get past its kind of dumb lyrics by sounding really good, especially the chorus. If you're a Beach Boys fan, then this is a great song and it should be in your playlist. Don't let the bad opinions on 'Summer In Paradise' keep you from enjoying this one (or "Lahaina Aloha": the best one on the CD).

As for the album: 'Summer In Paradise' was the Beach Boys' last album (1992), and their least successful (the only one not to chart). It has been ridiculed up and down as an embarrassing disaster, but that's not entirely the case. The album is bad because of three things: 1) It wanted to continue where "Kokomo" left off and they screwed it up; 2) half the songs are either outright terrible or plagued with dumb lyrics; and 3) it's good stuff is mired in all the crap so no one knew it was there since they probably threw it away after track 3. But it's really not garbage, there's great stuff on it... especially if you compare it to the Beach Boys' terrible artistic stuff after Pet Sounds (see my "Good Vibrations" review).

The Beach Boys – Lahaina Aloha Lyrics 15 years ago
"Lahaina Aloha" is the last great Beach Boys song.
The 'Summer In Paradise' album this song is on was the Beach Boys' last (1992), and their least successful (the only one not to chart). It has been ridiculed up and down as an embarassing disaster, but that's not entirely the case. The album is bad because of three things: 1) It wanted to continue where "Kokomo" left off and they screwed it up; 2) half the songs are unlistenably and outright terrible; and 3) it's good stuff is mired in all the crap so no one knew it was there. But there's great stuff if you can find it... such as this song.
As I said, it's their last great song: a lost gem. It has everything you'd want from the Beach Boys - at this time in their career anyway. The opening lyric "Where the sea breeze sways the palm trees, paradise awaits..." is gorgeous poetry for any Beach Boys fan. I won't break the song down, the whole thing is perfect.
As for the meaning, it's about 2 people who fall in love one night in Lahaina, Hawaii, but the guy has to leave on his ship and doesn't know when he'll ever be back.
On top of it being great, it's also a poignant last great chorus for Carl Wilson who had only a few years left... we know he wanted to, but couldn't stay...
and with that he, and the Beach Boys, sailed into the sunset.

The Beach Boys – Baby Blue Lyrics 15 years ago
One of their better ballads (and better songs) from the 70s. Dennis' vocals really work well here and give the song character, while the overall smooth and haunting nature make it stand out. Not a true classic, but worth listening to.

The Beach Boys – Winds Of Change Lyrics 15 years ago
This is unquestionably a lost gem when it comes to Beach Boys ballads. They don't have very many songs in their catalogue that have this gentle yet lush sound. It's produced to have a very 'final' feel to it, and it seems out of place except at the end of an album or playlist (it's the last track on its album: "MIU").
Obviously this song is about change. First the singer questions if it's going to be good, or just another letdown. Then it goes into the two verses that leave the song open for all kinds of different interpretations... I tend to just see it as someone kind of starting their life and being something of a role model or just a good person. At the end of the song the change is sweeping away all the bad of the past. The repeating "wont last forever" can be taken differently, but I think it's kind of like your conscience telling you to act on the change/opportunity because it wont always be there.
Overall, a beautiful song that should be in anyone's Beach Boys collection. (PS - The 'won't last forever' line is basically copied and pasted from the end of their own song "When I Grow Up", though I don't know why).

The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations Lyrics 15 years ago
Undoubtedly one of the greatest songs in pop music history, and obviously in the Beach Boys' repetoire.
I'm not going to dissect the artistry and intricate mechanics of this (or any song for that matter) because my opinion is that it doesn't matter if a song is "art" or just a throw-away tune, a good song is good because of what it does for the listener. This is a great song and I love it, but the far far less complex and artistic "Kokomo" is better because of what it does for me when I listen to it.
People love to argue over whether art/music is good or not, but it's such a waste of time because it's an individual thing. I hate almost everything from the Beach Boys after this song until the 80's because the "art" sounds like crap to me. The "Sunflower" album is outright trash compared to "All Summer Long". "Good Vibrations" is the most perfect melding of the Brian Wilson artistic 'junk' with the mainstream legendary Beach Boys sound, which is why it's so great. (I may not be much of a Mike Love fan, but he had a point back in the 60s when he told Brian they should stick closer to the formula that made them so popular - and would later bring them back).
Ok, there's my brief lecture on why I say what I do about the Beach Boys' songs. I said it here because this song is the crux of the whole thing. Sorry to Brian Wilson and his fans, but his best stuff was his stuff from "Good Vibrations" and earlier. (Honestly, what regular respectable person wants to hear 'Cabinessence' over 'Don't Worry Baby'?)

The Beach Boys – Sloop John B Lyrics 15 years ago
This is such an awesome song! Anyone who likes good music has to love this song (and the rest of the Beach Boys' best). Although I play it anytime, it's especially fun when stuck in transit home, whether it be at the airport or in traffic, etc... then it plays like your own personal soundtrack. Al Jardine picked this one out and made it a reality, and it was perhaps his most successful achievement in the heyday of the Beach Boys. Al Jardine rocks.

'ironhorse' above is correct. Although it can be used to reference any kind of bad trip or experience, this is actually a folk song that Al Jardine thought would make a good song (yep, it did). It is about the very morbid shipwreck of, you guessed it, the sloop "John B."

The Beach Boys – God Only Knows Lyrics 15 years ago
God only knows if it's the greatest love song ever (ha), but it's still perfect and truly one of the greatest songs of all-time. The first line is deceiving, as has been stated, because it's all about how how the love will always be there "as long as there are stars above you...". The best song on "Pet Sounds" and a true masterpiece.

This and "Don't Worry Baby" have the most brilliant and mind-blowingly beautiful vocal harmonies you will ever hear. This is just such a magnificent song. You could play it in Nome, Alaska on the coldest darkest day of the year and it would still feel like it's summer.

The Beach Boys – The Girl from New York City Lyrics 15 years ago
I don't exactly know why, but this song sounds terrible to me. The lyrics are great but the music just stinks... there's no groove or distinctive melody at all. And to think this opens the album that has "California Girls" on it... wow, what happened?

The Beach Boys – Girl Don't Tell Me Lyrics 15 years ago
Good but not great, and it's hard to get all the words. It seems to suffer from that 'echo chamber' production technique that was all the rage at the time. Needs more polish and a lot more backing vocals.

The Beach Boys – Forever Lyrics 15 years ago
A lot of Beach Boys fans hate this song, and I just don't know why. It's not like the Beach Boys weren't involved in this... they just let John Stamos sing it, big deal. He has a great voice for this song and does a great job. I wouldn't buy an album by him though.
I think the song is great and does Dennis Wilson proud in its resurrection. The worst thing about it is the almost inexplicable "crazy guitar solo" part on the 2nd instrumental break. Wht were they thinking?? Still, I think it's a welcome addition to the better of the Beach Boys songs over the years.

The Beach Boys – Forever Lyrics 15 years ago
This is the late Dennis Wilson's masterpiece, however his version suffers from poor sound and production quality so in the end only the real hardcore fans are going to listen to it and enjoy it. I guess I'm not one of those fans.
As referenced above, John Stamos re-recorded it with the Beach Boys years later and it appears on both their "Summer In Paradise" album (1992) and on a Full House episode or two since Stamos played 'Uncle Jesse'.

The Beach Boys – Finders Keepers Lyrics 15 years ago
Another one of those early album throw-aways that are just terrible and a real waste of the brilliant talent of the Beach Boys. (I forgot to say on "Farmer's Daughter"'s comments that this one stunk even more then "Lana" and "Noble Surfer" on their "Surfin' USA" album, so I'll say it now).

The Beach Boys – Farmer's Daughter Lyrics 15 years ago
This song doesn't hold up well nowadays because no one's going to relate to it at all and they probably don't want to hear a rock-n-roll song about travelling salesmen/vagabond/etc. But, yeah it is actually really good and a catchy tune, good enough that most will listen to it a couple of times.
I agree that "Lana" and "Noble Surfer" on the album are not very good, but the instrumentals (all 5 of em) are listenable, especially "Misirlou" which is possibly the Beach Boys' best instrumental song ever.

For whatever reason I think the 'golden era' Beach Boys sound the best on this song in every aspect... when they come in after the drumbeat opening it just melts you. It's like liquid summer. What a magnificent song.

PS: The Beach Boys are better than all of the Phil Spector produced groups put together, so Brian didn't have to worry afterall.

The Beach Boys – Do You Remember? Lyrics 15 years ago
A short but excellent song about some of the legendary people that created rock-n-roll and just how great it is. With rock sounding very little like it's rock-n-roll roots nowadays, this has even more meaning in a contemporary setting. Great music, great song.

The Beach Boys – Do It Again Lyrics 15 years ago
Although the sound quality could be better, this is such a great song by the Beach Boys, definately one of their 'best of the best'. Although many hardcore fans disagree, by 1968 the Beach Boys weren't recording good music as much anymore, but this one stands way out from the rest (along with "I Can Hear Music" from the same album: "20/20"). "Do It Again" is pretty much the anthem for getting the old friends back together and starting up summertime. It charted at #20.

A great topic for the Beach Boys, and you'd think it was going to be like "Surfin USA" only about amusement parks, but it majorly disappoints with it's stupid canned laughs and dialogue. If you're listening to the album ("Summer Days and Summer Nights") then skip this one and listen to the great "The I Kissed Her" which is the next track.

How can anyone not love this song? This is one of the true 'best of the best' Beach Boys and rock-n-roll songs. I remember once back in high school, I was able to put up the "have a safe summer" phrase on the replacable-letters entrance sign, but instead I put "We'll all be gone for the summer
We're on safari to stay
Tell the teacher we're surfin'
Surfin' U.S.A"
Everyone thought it was great and it stayed up for the whole 3 months.

Ah, Beach Boys: Disco Kings. Or not. The Beach Boys should leave this stuff to to the Bee Gees and get back to what they do best, singing about summer in beautiful, complex vocal harmonies. Oh yeah, and the song is almost 11 minutes long (I don't think I've made it through yet).

The Beach Boys – Lady Lynda Lyrics 15 years ago
Loosely based on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desire", this is one of Al Jardine's moments to shine in the spotlight he unfortunately rarely got. The song is a tribute to his wife, and is really really good, mostly because Al's voice is always so young and sunny-sounding (perfect for the Beach Boys). This was a massive hit in the United Kingdom, charting at #6. The UK people were huge fans, but America had all but forgotten the Beach Boys were still around by 1979 (in their defense the Beach Boys hadn't had much good music in a long time), so it didn't even make a dent in the US.

This song proves what makes the Beach Biys so good when they stick with the sound they were known for. It is such a simple, easy song, but is very good and memorable because they give it the treatment they gave their songs in their 'golden era'.
It's actually a very hollow song content-wise - it just sounds good. It was enough to get it to chart at #40 in 1979, but not good enough to meet the high standards of my Beach Boys playlist.

Although I don't ever include it on my Beach Boys playlist, I still like this song from time to time, especially if it's really raining (obviously).

The Beach Boys – Belles Of Paris Lyrics 15 years ago
This is actually a surpringly good song, although not quite a 'best of the best' kind of track. It's a pretty casual, mellow song about Paris and its vocal and musical elements are put together well. By the way, it could be called "Bells of Paris" or "Belles of Paris" (as it is on the CD) - 'belles' would mean beautiful women.
They re-recorded this song as "Bells of Christmas" and it also makes a pretty good Christmas song. Check it out on their "Ultimate Christmas" CD.

The Beach Boys – Peggy Sue (Buddy Holly cover) Lyrics 15 years ago
In response to the above: They recorded a cover of it on their 1978 "MIU" album.

Since the Beach Boys did the smart thing here and let Al Jardine sing lead and stuck very close to the late great Buddy Holly's brilliant original, this song is very very good, especially for the Beach Boys at this point in their career. It deservingly charted at #59, but I still recommend Holly's original from '57.

The CD reissue liner notes sum this song up well:
"'Kona Coast' by Al and Mike might just be the great lost Beach Boys beach song, a gorgeous paean to the mystical land of Hawai'i. Its layers of vocal harmonies are as luch as the tropical jungle and its melody is so contagious it's a wonder the Honolulu Chamber of Commerce hasn't appropriated the tune as its theme song."

This is one of The Beach Boys' 'best of the best', and should be on any fan's short list. As a bonus, they re-recorded it as a Christmas song called "Melekalikimaka" which is on their "Ultimate Christmas" CD.
