The Magnetic Fields – California Girls Lyrics 15 years ago
foreveradrone,

you're right, rereading that comment I see how ridiculous it sounds, and I didn't actually believe it would incite homicides :) it's darkly funny and I listened way too much into it the first time. I am officially chastised.

Sad, and yet somehow so romantic. Love it and the Kinks.

The Magnetic Fields – California Girls Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is totally disturbing. It is taking an idea that many find obnoxious (i.e. young, shallow people) and then seeing that idea as an extremely personal offense to oneself. Instead of just realizing how annoying these girls are the singer sees them somehow as a threat to him in particular. I think this happens a lot in gender issues, too, where one may not like a group of women (or vice versa) because they represent everything that is different from you. I have met some guys (and I am not at all trying to stereotype) who look at everything girls do and see it as mocking to them; a highly distorted projection. I think the song perfectly captures this sentiment, especially when the singer thinks he is special enough to feel personally judged by these countless and anonymous blondes, but it makes me highly uncomfortable because of the thick vein of realistic representation running through it.

Elysian Fields – Mermaid Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is lovely, subdued and hypnotic. Mermaids typically come to represent secrecy, unobtainable passion, and slightly dark sexuality. They are not to be trusted, because they can't become fully human. They are beauty that is hidden in dark waters, and because of this, they also signify magic nearby. I think the poetry of the song captures the feel of the idea of a mermaid very nicely.

k-os – The Rain Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh my gosh, one of my most favorite songs. It's so soulful and intense, in a 1950s r&b sort of way. I see it as feeling stifled by material desires--what we're expected to value in our lives--so much so that even relationships are contingent upon them.

Elliott Smith – Twilight (Somebody's Baby) Lyrics 18 years ago
One of the prettiest songs in the world. Most everyone can, will be able to, or were able to relate to these lyrics, the sound and what's not being said. To the overwhelming sorrow in the finality of his voice.

Poe – Amazed Lyrics 18 years ago
This song used to give me goosebumps. I don't listen to Poe much anymore, but I still appreciate her music. I love this song because not only is it about love and reliance, it's about strength, and taking something back. A house that is monstrous and oppressive can seem like or represent a despair for a person, and in this song, through love, through finding an inner infallible spirit can the speaker overcome what is killing her. It's beautiful.

Coldplay – A Rush of Blood to the Head Lyrics 19 years ago
The continuous references to buying suggests that in order to destroy an institutionalized object (a house, a gun) one must first "buy into" the system or play the game. The power to change something through violence can only be granted through first following that something's rules. The overall tone of the song also seems to hint that these two people are united through their inability to function within the systems they come from. The act of burning also acts as a ritual; an act of power that the two people could not receive from their failure to link with their society, in whatever way the singer may mean. Burning down the house one owns is not a reckless act, and neither is "starting a war," because both are premeditated and somewhat carefully planned out. Thus blaming their (oddly institutionalized) violence upon a rush of blood to the head--on just a whim--becomes ironic.

Justin Timberlake – SexyBack Lyrics 19 years ago
Wow, one of the hottest songs I've heard in a long time. GREAT to dance to! I don't think it's about dominatrices necessarily, just rough sex, and all things sex. Oh, and just because you didn't buy into the whole boy band craze of the 90s doesn't mean you have to forever knock Justin Timberlake and his music. I was never an N'Sync fan, but his music has improved greatly, IMO; everything's very slick and soulful and sexy. I think there's a time and a place for all types of music--from gritty indie rock to tasteful classical to sexy, well-executed pop like this. Great new album!
