Burial – Archangel Lyrics 11 years ago
This song captures the psyche of a man haunted by gnomes ("Could it be a gnome?") while uncertain of his own gnome identity ("Tell me I'm the gnome"). It is a poignant thinkpiece that makes us all look in the mirror and ask ourselves: Are we all gnomes?

Jesu – Star Lyrics 16 years ago
After almost an entire year after posting my first interpretation, I returned to find Scooper's wonderful addition to it. I think you're right on, Scooper, and to this day "Star" remains one of my favorite songs. Justin Broadrick is a musical god to me.

This is by far my favorite song of his...very powerful lyrics. A beautiful portrayal of the circle of life.

Jesu – Star Lyrics 17 years ago
First of all, there is an incorrect lyric here which is supposed to be "All you dreamed you are," not "All the dreams you are."

Anyway, I interpret this song as a criticism of modern popular music in which the over-glamorous stardom that accompanies being a "rock star" often diminishes the importance of making creative and artistic music. I interpret the first lines of "If I could just ignore it / If I could just forget it / Like you do" as Justin saying that the art of music is being forgotten and he refuses to do so. "Gonna be a star / It won't be so hard" seems to me like he's saying that it doesn't take anything overly special to be a rock star nowadays, just as long as you get the right corporate connections. I also feel like the repetive and overly powerful snare drum pattern in the song and obnoxious twangy guitars are almost mocking "cliche" rock n' roll tactics.

Jesu – Friends are Evil Lyrics 17 years ago
John 8:1-7

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."
