The Weeknd – Montreal Lyrics 11 years ago
The lyrics in the background of the song are from France Gall's (or rather Serge Gainsbourgh's) "Laisse Tomber les Filles", a song about a boy breaking a girl's heart and she warns him to "leave the girls alone", unless he wants to suffer her fate.

David Bowie – We Are the Dead Lyrics 11 years ago
Should be noted that O'Brien works for Big Brother in the Ministry of Truth, which fabricates lies, but he also works for the Ministry of Love, which is the torture department.

Ray Parker Jr. – Ghostbusters Lyrics 11 years ago
I believe it is about who we are about to call.

Tom Waits – Misery Is the River of the World Lyrics 11 years ago
Aeschylus wrote the line based on the philosophical thought that you can only judge something on its completion; thus someone is only happy if most of his life, in total, has been joyful.

Seen in the context of the song it seems to imply that a very small majority of things, actions and people are good, because they've had bad consequences or done bad things as well as good.

The Mountain Goats – For Charles Bronson Lyrics 11 years ago
That's what I thought at first too, but I think the bit about Ehrenfeld, PA, the cameraman and "stay cool and seldom speak" fits better with the actor. It's vague though.

Gallows – Orchestra of Wolves Lyrics 12 years ago
Just thought I'd note that "The hardest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return" is a riff of Nature Boy, a song popularized by Nat King Cole that concludes with "the greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return".

The song is of course is about "strange and enchanted boy", "a little shy and sad of eyes, but very wise[...]", whose implied to be a bit of a noble savage; which the narrator of Orchestra of Wolves to some extent also is.

The Mountain Goats – Mole Lyrics 12 years ago
It's definitely something to The Prisoner; I find it very difficult to believe that he would repeat that word, in that tone, and it not being a reference. Wether it's just a quick quip or a more thorough allusion, I'm unsure of.

My Chemical Romance – Vampire Money Lyrics 12 years ago
Is the intro an allusion to Sweet's (another glamrock band) Ballroom Blitz?

The Mountain Goats – Golden Boy Lyrics 12 years ago
Considering how many songs he has dedicated to defiance against Christianity (Wizard Buys a Hat, Heretic Pride, 1 Samuel 15:23) I'd wager that he's an atheist or agnostic with Christian roots.

Gallows – Orchestra of Wolves Lyrics 12 years ago
It's not. If he spiked the drinks, then they wouldn't be able to remember his name and they would be passed out. Did you even read the lyrics?

Los Campesinos! – We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed Lyrics 12 years ago
Kieron Gillen, writer of the comic Phonogram and a music journalist, wrote about Los Campesinos in 2007, saying: "They’re as beautiful and as doomed a pop-band as I’ve ever seen."

That's where the title originates from.

There's a Phonogram reference in "Ways to Make It Through the Wall" as well.

Amanda Palmer – Guitar Hero Lyrics 13 years ago
I'd imagine it was because it was one of the first songs in Guitar Hero 1.

Death Cab for Cutie – Meet Me on the Equinox Lyrics 13 years ago
Since the song doesn't specifically mention any of the Twilight characters, isn't written by someone directly involved with the movie and the author himself has said that it isn't related directly with the story in New Moon, interpreting the song in the context of that story isn't quite accurate.

It should be interpreted as a thing in and of itself.

submissions
My Chemical Romance – Kill All Your Friends Lyrics 13 years ago
"I Was Killing Before Killing Was Cool" is probably a reference to the Al Columbia horror comic, "I Was Killing, when Killing Wasn't Cool" from the alt-comic anthology, Zero Zero.

The Raconteurs – Carolina Drama Lyrics 13 years ago
Actually, I figured the blue tattoos were literal. Prison tattoos usually start out blue, as they're made by heating up ballpens, most of which are blue.

Fever Ray – If I Had a Heart Lyrics 13 years ago
I'm so certain that she's sampled a horror theme for that song, but I, frustratingly, can't place it. I want to say it's a John Carpenter theme.

Los Campesinos! – Ways to Make It Through the Wall Lyrics 13 years ago
Amazing song, though it does kind of bug me that the line is "I identify my star sign/ by asking which is least compatible with yours," and not "I identify your star sign/ by asking which is least compatible with mine"

Art Brut – Slap Dash For No Cash Lyrics 13 years ago
Argos said, and the lyrics support it, that it's about his favorite band, The Mountain Goats. Though I assume it's focused on Darnielle's Lo-Fi stuff. Meaning everything before Tallahassee. Later albums are pretty good though. I love everything he's written.

M.I.A. – Come Around Lyrics 14 years ago
The beat I like.

I also like how Timberland seemingly ignores whatever context is put before his rap to do his usual stick of half-flirtation with whatever singer he's preforming with.

Why is Melloy so obsessed with underwear? It's all over "Her Majesty."

Eels – Mr. E's Beautiful Blues Lyrics 15 years ago
@sdine07, actually he is being sarcastic. It has a sarcastic tone. If something is intentional, or created by someone with a specific intent, it isn't irony. Irony demands that it was happenstance or by accident, and can only be asserted after the fact.

The Mountain Goats – Oceanographer's Choice Lyrics 15 years ago
This is the quick reconciliation in the Alphas' turbulous relationship before they final call it quits. It's the deathless love (a monsterous form of eternal love) from Faultlines. The reconciliation is, of course, not out of kindness, but a struggle between the two, which is why the sex is described by using words commonly associated with fighting.

And the song starts off with an Icon of immortality and purity being, rather bluntly, stabbed to death by... well Death.

Anyone have any idea why it's called Oceanographer's Choice? My sleep-deprived mind hasn't gotten that far into gear on that yet.

The The – Armageddon Days Are Here (Again) Lyrics 15 years ago
The first eight lines are callbacks to The Sweet's (or probably the Damned's cover of) Ballroom Blitz.

Which is of course about an enormous fight between everyone.

Patrick Park – Life is a Song Lyrics 15 years ago
It's also about accepting change and embracing fluidity of personality, for the better or the worse, and is very much anti-materialism. It says that you should never be bound by anything, positive or negative, if it's inhibiting your freedom to do something you want.

Gogol Bordello – Supertheory of Supereverything Lyrics 15 years ago
"No, I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be SSC. It was a planned particle accelerator to be built in Texas. The SSC stands for Superconducting Super Collider."

Which is why Eugene is also singing about protons and neurons.

The SSC was also created in an attempt at "seeing" the Higgs Boson, the particle which is suppose to explain why matter has mass at all. The Higgs Boson is also known as the God Particle. Which is what this song is all about.

Gogol Bordello – Alcohol Lyrics 15 years ago
They do an absolutely amazing and heartfelt live preformance of it.

Billie Holiday – Gloomy Sunday Lyrics 15 years ago
Fantastic and depressing song. The last verse there is just so horribly inappropriate for the song... It just infuriates me.

PS. To be fair, Seress killed himself a good while after the death of his girlfriend and the release of this song. The song has never officially been linked to as a cause of suicide.

Eels – Efils' God Lyrics 15 years ago
It's about dying. "Splitting this hunk of clay," among a plenthora of other blatant allusions to slowly dying. It's a common idea in various relgions that Man was made from clay.

Eels – Novocaine For The Soul Lyrics 15 years ago
It's about the two ways of "surviving life:" finding something that matters to you or getting hard and numb to it all.

Eels – Somebody Loves You Lyrics 15 years ago
It's a very clear song to understand. It's about pulling through awful situations, because somebody (including yourself) loves you.

OK Go – What To Do Lyrics 15 years ago
Lye is poisonous and the Apple can both be interpreted as the Apple from the Bible or the poisonous apple from Snowwhite. The Lye and the Apple are also both contrasts between something good and something bad, which recurres when the song refers to friends as righteous and pathetic.

OK Go – Let It Rain Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is very much about drinking your troubles away, aside from the obvious like blurred vision, "What's in your glass? Do you feel better now?" and spinning in an empty room, "Let it rain" is alternated with "let it pour" as an allusion to the weather, but also to pouring another drink.

Klaxons – As Above, So Below Lyrics 16 years ago
It's also taken from Grant Morrison's The Invisibles series, where he argues that humanity/existence as a whole is a cosmic fetus waiting to be reborn into something new. Barbelith, which is "As Above, So Below" functions as a womb, providing existence with what it needs to evolve. It's basically about the ludicracy of "black/white," Us Vs. Them mentality or I Vs. The Other from psychology, because we're basically all the same thing. As Above, so Below.

The escalation in the song could be interpreted, if we're going by the Invisibles comparison, to be the approaching apocalypse, when existence makes the next leap to something new.

Arctic Monkeys – Brianstorm Lyrics 16 years ago
The lyrics are pretty straight forward, but I'm sort of trying to figure out if the video's meant as a parody of the usual music videos, that seem to put a great focus on a plenthora of anonymous dancing girls with almost no interaction on the band's part. Notice how they're all in shadows and whenever we're show the boys, it's either from far away or an angle that makes it hard to tell who they are, if we didn't know already.

Eels – Elizabeth On The Bathroom Floor Lyrics 16 years ago
According to various sources, the song is a compilation of various poems and just general writing from his sister's diary, while she institutionalized.

Eels – Your Lucky Day In Hell Lyrics 16 years ago
To me, at least, it's about trying to be optimistic about a situation, despite knowing that whatever it is that you're in, it can't possibly go over well.

OK Go – A Good Idea at the Time Lyrics 16 years ago
Like someone mentioned, think Sympathy for the Devil by Rolling Stones. It's pretty much a straightup tribute to that song.

"I was around Jesus Christ had his moment of doubt and pain
Made damn sure that Pilate washed his hands and sealed his fate"

"Stuck around St. Petersburg when I saw it was a time for a change
Killed the Tzar and his ministers; Anastaria screamed in vain"

"Let me please introduce myself I'm a man of wealth and taste"

"So if you meet me Have some courtesy
Have some sympathy, and some taste
Use all your well-learned politesse
Or I'll lay your soul to waste, um yeah"

These are all quotes from Sympathy for the Devil which are mirrored in "A Good Idea at the Time."

If you want to be philosophical about it, it's about doing something stupid and then blaming someone (or a concept) for it, when actually you're the only person to blame.
