I'm surprised that nobody has commented on this song. It is so beautiful lyrically. In my opinion, this song describes an infatuation with an alluring female a male character has met in a nightclub. I love the imagery in the lyrics; you could just picture it so well. I like the line: "She flies like a bird over his shoulder/she whispers in his ear, "boy, you are my star" It just seems so romantic in a way. i'd love to say that to someone :-) |

when i first heard this song, i looked up who mat kearney was, and found out he is a christian rock artist. ever since, i've been trying to interpret this song keeping this in mind. so, i think that this song can be interpreted as being spiritual for the speaker. instead of a romantic partner, i think the "person" he is referring throughout the song may be God. I could get the idea that he has had some sort of religiious awakening, particularly from the following lines: "and i found myself in a bitter fight while i've held your hand through the darkest night don't know where your coming from but your coming soon" (maybe he feels God was guiding him through the hard times, holding his hand) (also, a lot of christian people believe that Christ will come again, so maybe that is what the last line refers to) "come on and we'll sing, like we were free push the pedal down watch the world around fly by us come on and we'll try, one last time i'm off of the floor one more time to find you" (maybe singing refers to rejoicing song such as in a church choir. the rest of it maybe refers to him trying to find God) I am not a religious person nor am i that familiar with Mat Kearney, but I think interpreting it in the religious/christian context works pretty well. |

this song was recently featured on one of those "i love the..." shows on vh1...(can't remember which year it was), and i found it really funny that the commentators were saying how this is an insulting song. "you are so beautifull.....well, to me at least" LOL, i didn't agree with this interpretation, but i still thought it was really funny. I actually think the "..to me" part emphasizes that the speaker doesn't care anything about what other people would think, not necessarily meaning that they'd think she is ugly, but regardless of what other people may or may not think, he doesn't care: she's beautiful to him! |

this song seems depressing to me. i don't know if it's just that initial stubborn "I'm right, you're wrong" attitude after you have a fight with someone, or if it is someone sucluding themselves and dropping out of their circle of friends because they really have given up on life. any ideas? |

I definately think it's about a guy who is afraid to admit that he's in love or afraid to realize it for himself, so he tells himself all these excuses for why he still has her picture, or down plays his calling her, and so forth... maybe he is the kind of person who is an emotionally closed person and doesn't want his true feelings for the person to be known, so he shrugs off all the evidence that he's into her and actually tries to push away the girl a little bit. some of the stuff is a little insulting, if you think of it: me calling you doesn't mean anything to me, so don't be tellin all your friends about it...and your picture is only there to hide that ugly stain on the wall...not as if i want your picture around... I think he loves her but is too emotionally unavialable to actually get close to her. |

what do you guys think of the line, "she wonders who will be the first to go..." (is the next word, alone, part of the same sentence??) I am so confused by this song. my uneducated guess would include the idea that this female character is the pessimistic type who dwells on the morbid big picture, and the narrator tries to talk to her and get her not to think about those things. I get this notion from the part: "And I can tell you about the little things So you don't think about the big things for a while" and since the female character is doing the wondering who will go first, which i am assuming means, she's wondering if he'll get bored with her and leave her.. that seems completely wrong, since I have no clue about the remainder of the song, it most likely is completely wrong! a lot of ben's songs seem self-evident, but not this one! |
