José González – Cycling Trivialities Lyrics 16 years ago
God, this song blows me away. It's so epically depressing. The way I see it, it's about how all of life is basically meaningless and trivial, and all we are is part of a cycle which goes on and on. So people are "cycling trivialities," just caught in the loop of existence, but most of them are too blind and self-possessed to notice it. All of those things in our lives we see as important, our dreams and ambitions, beauty, humor, self-growth, comes down to cycles of water, carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorous. And then González just keeps playing through the guitar loop over and over and you sit there, stunned. Earth-shattering.

Get Set Go – It Must Be Love Lyrics 17 years ago
great song, good job on lyrics. my favorite get set go album. but i'm not sure about this line:
"You're sick of stayin' up till 3."
i always thought that was "sittin' up till 3" as in, he was sitting up until 3, wondering where she was. is this an official version?

The North Atlantic – The Bottom of This Town Lyrics 17 years ago
maybe the best song in the history of ever.

yeah.
so, basically, it's about the loneliness of cities, and how people discover that they need each other more and more as loneliness deepens.

The Mars Volta – Asilos Magdalena Lyrics 17 years ago
Mary Magdalene is still the far-and-away most misunderstood character in the Bible. For one thing, she wasn't a prostitute! For another, she is never described as one of Jesus's closest followers- she was just another disciple. All we know about Mary Magdalene is that she was present at Jesus's crucifixion, then, later, at his resurrection. There are other women named Mary in the passage, namely, Mary the mother of Jesus, the "sinful woman" who was likely a prostitute who had seven demons cast out of her, and, in addition, there was a woman who went unnamed but is the star of the famous story in which a woman washes Jesus's feet with expensive perfume and her own hair. And trust me, she was NOT Jesus's wife. (I do not say this as a conservative Christian, I am in fact a deist; my father was a pastor, so I've read much of the Bible several times over. She wasn't Jesus's wife because there is absolutely no mention of this in the Bible, and explicit mention that Jesus was not married.)

None of these other women are Mary Magdalene. Nonetheless, TMV may not have known any of that, so Asilos Magdalena may well have been written from her perspective. I think that once you cut through the wrongheaded religious symbolism, Rexcore has the best explanation- the woman has suffered terrible injustice, and makes a pact with her lord's enemy.

P.S.: aydinyasin biraders, stop using drugs. You make no sense.

HIM – Wings of a Butterfly Lyrics 17 years ago
You can say anything you want about the interpretation of the song, but the factual basis and inspiration for the song may have come from the experiences of famous actress Natalie Wood. As a child star, her parents were very abusive and pushed her into fame. In one specific incidence, Wood's mother wanted her to cry on-camera, and she could not do so. So, in order to get the tears flowing, she would keep a butterfly in a jar on the set and tear off its wings to get Natalie to cry. Additionally, Wood said that anytime she saw the wings ripped off of a butterfly, her tears came directly "from the soul."

Take it anyway you want, but I think it's pretty likely this song was inspired by that.

The Coup – Me And Jesus The Pimp In A '79 Granada Last Night Lyrics 17 years ago
How has no one commented this yet? This is one of my favorite Coup songs and one of my favorite rap songs period. It's pure, complex, dark, meaningful, and elegantly brutal. The problems Boots has with the social structure of Oakland and the glorification of prostitution are bold without being blunt, and every line is its own form of dark beauty. Love this song.

The Decemberists – The Mariner's Revenge Song Lyrics 17 years ago
This sounds a bit crazy, but this song reminds me of The Coup's "Me and Jesus the Pimp in a '79 Granada Last Night." There are a ton of parallels; basically, the only difference is that "Mariner's" takes place at sea and "Me and Jesus" takes place in Oakland.

I've heard this song about a million times, and it's still one of my all-time favorites. Very few other songs, even by the Decemberists, are as adept at creating a mental image. The narrator lets you see every detail of his life, from a fatherless child to a wild-eyed murderous young man. It would be almost impossible to screw up the music video for this song: Meloy gives you all the details in his lyrics and his mournful and wild voice. Great, great, great song.
