KISS – Black Diamond Lyrics 16 years ago
It's taken me a few years but now I've finally realized how KISS is totally amazing. Although cowbellplz would even have to admit Gene Simmons is slightly more than "just a little but of a sell out" - he wrote the fucking book on it!

KISS – Black Diamond Lyrics 17 years ago
I refuse to listen to KISS on principal (for obvious reasons) so have only experienced this song through the version by The Replacements. I fully admit I've never heard 'Black Diamond' performed by KISS, but I still know it's approximately three thousand times more awesome than anything Gene Simmons had to do with. By the way Gene, nice reality show. Real original.

The best debut song on a British album since "Rock n' Roll Star"? You better believe it.

The Stone Roses – Fools Gold Lyrics 17 years ago
excellent post wordsandbirds - a great personalized remark on what the song could actually mean to Ian Brown. However, when I hear this song, I see the beauty of it lies in the generality of the theme. This song is about all those who's journey is for inauthentic means, the ones who are looking for the treasure but it is not their real treasure. I love how wordsandbirds used the word propoganda, as all the people not chasing after their own independently concieved goals are victims of some form of societal propoganda. Their goals in the end, will not have any real meaning to them just like fools gold has no value (sorry for having to actually point that out, but i just wanted to be as clear as possible).

The Flaming Lips – Mr. Ambulance Driver Lyrics 17 years ago
The Flaming Lips have the uncanny ability to create music that finally lets my life accept some kind of positivity. Even in a sadder song such as Mr.Ambulance Drive, I recognize the morbidness of the situation, but at the same time feel an inspirational power infuse my soul. As the lyrics amalgamate with the sounds I feel introspectivley energized and ready to finally crawl out from underground and embrace the beautiful blue sky. The Flaming Lips are a magical source of musical serenity. Can't wait to see them at the V-Fest in Toronto in September.

The Flaming Lips – My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion (The Inner Life as Blazing Shield of Defiance and Optimism as Celestial Spear of Action) Lyrics 17 years ago
A postive rebellion of a bird to sing throughout the winter even while all the other birds are long gone. The bird did what he wanted and did not let anything beyond his control distract him from what he himself believed is important.

The Flaming Lips – My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion (The Inner Life as Blazing Shield of Defiance and Optimism as Celestial Spear of Action) Lyrics 17 years ago
A metaphor for fullfillment in life by using the seasons - autumn the beginning of a period of sadness in this case. While most birds fly south to warmer [happier] weather the rebellious bird in this song decides to stay throughout the winter. Deciding not to always chase after the seasons and the sun the rebellious bird sings beautiful melodies in the winter. This bird has hope, knowing that just because it's winter [a dark depressing period] that it has to get better [warmer] and the bird will do what it in it's own way to make the best of the time.

Arctic Monkeys – Leave Before the Lights Come On Lyrics 17 years ago
the first time i saw this song was during a show at the Kool Haus in Toronto and I remember not being too impressed with it. But after hearing the recording a couple times it has really gotten hold of me. Alex just keeps pumping out the the classic tunes. However it makes me extremly interesting to see how the new album is going to sound - it has to be much different that "Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not", and 'Leave Before the Lights Come' is an encouraging recording of a song written and recorded well after the overwhelming hype. Alex has the literary talent to keep making genius lyrics, and I hope he is able to branch out and explore more different themes than the summarization of everyday teenage life from the debut album. He did all he can, and it's time to move on, and with his talent I can't wait to see what it brings.

Ocean Colour Scene – Travellers Tune Lyrics 17 years ago
A symbolic journey of looking for love? Or is it more focused on any other kind of general thought of travelling far and wide looking for something - something you want and need and will not stop to get until you have it. Whatever it is, it makes me want to step out my door and experience the journey.

Ocean Colour Scene – Profit In Peace Lyrics 17 years ago
The most thorough explanation of this song can be found in George Orwell's "1984", particulary the part where Winston Smith is given a copy of the manual of the Brotherhood. Inside there is a very details and intelligent look inside the causes of war and the consequential benefits to a very small portion who are able to profit and exert control over the general population through extended periods of war. Basically it is explained that if all surplus human labour is directed to a destructive path such as war then the masses will be kept in lower living conditions through longer work days and the constant fear of death if not protecting the country by contributing to working to produce weaponry. This eventually results in a veil of ignorance blinding the population from the motives of their government and the population is generally dumbed down.
However, this song is essentially a plea for the previously mentioned to not occur, and instead wishes for peace, mentioning the only real 'profit' for all humans can be through peace where a large bulk of a society's labour force is not focuses on creating vastly expensive and labour intensive weaponry to destroy other human beings. So a new fight is called on in which a fight against the corruption of the governments who to war and bring the power back to the people so we can all live more beatiful lives, collectivly as good people are not wasting their time, money and well-being on wars that do nothing but destroy.
A wonderful thought and a wonderful song.

In my opinion the best song off of It Still Moves. My Morning JAcket are creating irresistable epic recordings and Masterplan is one of those, such that it would not be out of place on the band's masterpiece - Z.

John Frusciante – Time Goes Back Lyrics 17 years ago
The best from John Frusciante has the ability to but the musicianship to the side as the listener feels John is communicating to them only through emotions through the median of sound. Wearing his heart on his sleeve, John Frusciante has the inate ability to channel those painful yet beautiful feelings he has experienced into the listener and take them into his own, magical world.

The Stone Roses – Bye Bye Badman Lyrics 17 years ago
The centrepiece of the Stone Roses debut album Bye Bye Badman ignites the rebellioussness of a Britain in the midst of the conservative government led by Margarat Thatcher. This song [thanks for the explanations of the lemons paul coyle] spoke to a generation of British youths who had long grown up in conservative Britain and gave them a sense of rebellion and self confidence as it kickstarted a generation from the Smiths to Oasis and Conservatives to New Labour as the resurgence of Cool Britania commenced.

David Bowie – Heroes Lyrics 17 years ago
And when we are all mostly parts of the machine, the dehumanization of society has resulted into turning the Modern Man into something less than human. When we are controlled by so many other forces, many of which are not driven by real human desires such as love and art, but are instead driven by the machine-like goals of materialism. As humans become more machine love becomes less genuine and the quotations perhaps indicate a more cynical commentary of the lack of real love in a relentless and mechanical zeitgesit.

David Bowie – Heroes Lyrics 17 years ago
While on the surface this can be seen simply as a uplifting "Let's Take On the World" anthem, the genius in this song can be attributed to the quotation marks. With the clear reference to the Berlin Wall and the conquering of oppression by love, there is a sad and cynical twist upon the realization the same love can make us feel like heroes, but we can only really be "heroes" as we are can be oppressed by forces we cannot easily defeat. The beauty and exhilaration of love can make everything seem to be paradise, yet at the root it is bittersweet as most can never be real heroes, but are mainly parts to the machine.

Modest Mouse – Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset Lyrics 17 years ago
A brutally honest reflection upon oneselves is needed to see through all the lies we subconsciously create around our lives. This song appears to be at the stage where Issac is in that dark and terribly painful moment where he has been able to look at himself in a purely objective viewpoint for the first time in too long. He has been seeing his life in an individually subjective way and has created lies, and ran away from what he knows he needs to do and is reflecting on what he realizes he has done and is left in a state of complete confusion. Issac has become aware of the discrepancy between his subjective view of his life with the universal truth and objective viewpoint but is lost as to where he really stands. A painful moment, yet vital to being able to change one's life for the better and begin to understand the connection between one's self and everything you experience outside the confines of your mind. The journey to authenticity can only be achieved through honesty, and most people cannot experience the immense suffering caused through honesty. However, it is beautiful to see Issac describing that stage, as it creates a friend for everyone out there who are experiencing the pain in their attempt for authenticity in the initial phase of complete objective honesty.

I can only thank Modest Mouse for creating something so wonderfully reflective about the pain we sometimes put ourselves through to correct the past and become better people right now, and now in the future.

The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony Lyrics 17 years ago
Life in a nutshell can only describe The Verve's soaring opener to Urban Hymns. Bittersweet Symphony explores the primal theme of the zeitgeist, initially painting a bleak picture expressing the emptiness of materialism when so many lost souls in the modern age only chase after money until they die. However, Richard Ashcroft sings with all his emotional force, as he looks to the brighter side and all the beauty of life. Music and love are what carry him and he sings this song as an ode to them, showing the pains of life can always be succeeded by what ourselves define as the beauty we want to experience and live our lives for.
