This song is awesome. I can't stop listening to it. Couple thoughts on Kimbra's verse. It initially had me thinking that her last line was a clever twist in who she actually was - initially it sounds like she's explaining what went wrong in their relationship, but when she says she catches him "hung up on someone that you used to know," perhaps she's not actually the one he's obsessed about - perhaps she's the new gf, and she's sick of him being hung up on an old flame. And maybe it's just a perpetuating cycle. But then after watching some interviews about the song, he mentioned he needed to add something else- another side to the story. So apparently he did intend this to be the other side of the same relationship. So now after listening to it a million more times, it sounds to me like she initially hoped he would be able to let go of the relationship and just be friends - but it just wasn't working for her and she was getting fed up with his crap and she couldn't handle it anymore. Because he was still hung up on her. She IS now the "somebody that he used to know," talking about herself in the 3rd person. She had to cut him off. She's explaining her side of why it had to be that way. That meaning fits better with the rest of the song. (but it's a song, and as such, it's totally open to interpretation. you make it mean what you want it to mean.) So now I'm realizing how it actually describes my first relationship almost perfectly. |
