Dire Straits – Money For Nothing Lyrics 3 years ago
@[cfinkel:36450] You probably realized my review was from 2006, and decided I wasn't going to reply...but here I am, for the first time in a loooooong time, lol.

I see I've been mentioned a few times by a few other reviewers, and not in a good light. I deserve all of that.

2006 me was maybe a bit of an idiot. I'm not going to do any sort of thorough assessment of this song or any of the others I've said stupid things about, but I will say that Money for Nothing has grown into one of my favorites and I enjoy it in its full length form, inclusive of all original language. My tastes and opinions on social issues have evolved. Censoring artwork is not cool and I'm disappointed in myself that I was ever cool with it.

Cheers.

The Real McCoy – Another Night Lyrics 15 years ago
As with everything...different interpretations.

This song speaks volumes to me, because there is someone in my life like this...not an unknown, but someone who just might not fully understand what my thoughts of them are doing to me mentally. Never a bad thing...but sometimes not a good thing either.

Heat: I think spunheart is simply unfamiliar with the band (note both band members in question have unisex names) and made an assumption based on 99.99999 percent of other songs with similar themes.

In any event, awesome song.

Ah, good ol' Alice Cooper. Can't go wrong here.

I think it's safe to say an Alice Cooper song is all about the music and vocals, much more than the lyrics themselves.

I'd have to agree with the previous comment.

There is the possibility for further depth and meaning here, but knowing ZZ Top, I somehow doubt it.

Feist – 1234 Lyrics 16 years ago
The lyrics to this song are fantastic, without question. However, her vocal presentation is lame (at best), and the musical accompaniment to this track is...well, let's say I cannot maintain mature composure if I used the words I want to use to describe this song.

People do not like this song because it is good. People like it because it is continually pounded into their heads by Apple's poor marketing. It's so popular because it's repetitive in a bad way and has a tone that draws your attention because of how irritating it is.

Like I said...great lyrics. The writer knows what they're doing. However, everything beyond the lyrics (in written form) is simply atrocious.

Boston – A Man I'll Never Be Lyrics 16 years ago
It's a crime that less people have commented on this song.

The lyrics pretty much spell it out...boy and girl are in relationship. Girl won't see boy as he is, either thinks or expects too highly of him. Boy sees this and is saddened that he can't be good enough for girl.

Beautiful lyrics, fantastic instrumentals, great vocals. This is Boston.

Styx – Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) Lyrics 16 years ago
A lot of Styx songs don't have that "deeper meaning" that people try to find in songs. Sorry, many just DON'T have it...the meaning is directly in the lyrics, and usually has no depth whatsoever...not all Styx songs, but many. This isn't an insult to them, and although it is usually considered to be a trademark of a rather non-imaginative lyricist, Styx pull it off very well.

That being said...they're absolutely fantastic. Excellent vocal and musical work make the classic songs hundreds of times better than most modern music.

"keeping my eye to the keyhole" refers to, in this particular lyrical context, working a bad job and listening through the upper staff's door keyholes (literally) to hear about new job advancement opportunities.

This song is fantastic...but attempting to draw depth from it is a lost cause.

spiegelglanz, nice interpretation, but I'm sure even you can see it's stretched razor-thin. I wonder if Styx intentionally did this, to make people wonder about the lyrics, because people always have for as long as music with vocals has existed.

Alice Cooper – Bed Of Nails Lyrics 16 years ago
This song pretty much has two meanings, but they blend together.

I think there can be no disputing the sexual references here. This song very easily and in its entirety can be taken as a reference to hardcore, possibly kinky sex.

However, there's a slightly deeper meaning. Some, not all, of Alice's work around this timeframe did have a deeper meaning, and in this case it's love and the pains of a relationship. For example, "put me in your slammer" could reference both entering a woman sexually as well as succumbing to a particular demand or compromise in a relationship.

Besides these two generally interconnected interpretations, I don't see any other real possibilities. Yes, song interpretation is the responsibility of the listener, but in some cases (such as this one) there aren't many open ends.

"Well I'm takin' my time, I'm just movin' on
You'll forget about me after I've been gone"

RIP Brad Delp

We certainly won't forget about you now that you're gone.

Arguably, a vocalist is what makes a band. He made Boston be Boston.

Genesis – Follow You Follow Me Lyrics 16 years ago
lateralus518, you've got it exactly right.

No, I don't mean that's what Genesis intended by the song...I mean it's the right conclusion to come to. This song is somewhat open-ended. It can mean a couple different things...the first and most obvious is a relationship, and finding security in that person.

However, if you consider the song as not being sung about/to a person, what conclusion do you draw? That it is being sung about memories and past experiences is what I find.

In any event, a great song. Arguably one of Genesis' best.

R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 16 years ago
"Losing my religion", as a phrase, has a very broad meaning: losing control or care in one way or another.

In this song specifically, I think it's a reference to sanity. The singer is mourning the loss of something (what it is, we do not know) and sees his sanity slipping away before his very eyes.

I may very well be wrong, but hey, this is how I see it.

Second in line to this, IMO, is the homosexuality theory on the first page of comments.

Electric Light Orchestra – Don't Bring Me Down Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is definitely about a relationship (say, girlfriend/boyfriend, but could also apply to regular friendship) in which one person (the singer) is constantly put down / made to feel less significant by the other person (being sung to), who always leaves them behind. My rationale for the friendship idea is that many friendships with "two-faced" people can relate to this song perfectly.

As for non-orchestral content, I think it's good. The only ELO songs that I like are the ones featuring restrained or no "orchestra-type" instruments...ie. this song, Four Little Diamonds, Do Ya...all of these songs do feature that type of instrument, but much less significantly than they're earlier hits.

Edgar Winter – Free Ride Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know the originally intended meaning, and yeah it likely is drug-related, but I don't care. To me, this song more or less is about how politics/the world take complicated routes to accomplish nothing when you can accomplish the same (nothing) a much easier way...ie. the concept of "free" being the simple way that doesn't require funding to happen.

Thinking about it, it was definitely about drugs. But hey, I told ya how I see it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who sees it that way.

Jefferson Starship – We Built This City Lyrics 17 years ago
The song never did have an religious meaning. It really, really pissed me off to read SlickDick's comment...religious activists trying to convert everything better than them into themselves...but, this is a topic for a different forum.

ROCKMAN, SHUKE, and CHACHI ALL HAVE IT RIGHT, to varying degrees. Shuke moreso than anyone else, but if you mix all of them together, you get it!

I can't believe how few people understand the simple message of this song. Put it on repeat and put on a blindfold. Listen to it sober, maybe? Anything. Focus only on what you hear, not what you read, see, taste, smell or anything else.

And by the way, the traffic report was an original feature. It refers to Los Angeles in the original version, but many radio stations cut in their own local traffic report for a local bridge.

These lyrics are grossly incorrect. I have yet to find a lyrics site that has them 100%...and this is one of the most far-off versions I've found.

Great music, great vocals, good lyrics, good message. Overall great song.

I beg to differ Chris Dixon, I believe that Jefferson Airplane was the weakest of the three. Then Starship, then Jefferson Starship (for those who do not know, this band went through three "phases", wikipedia it).

Regardless of what the lyrics are about, I think we can all agree that the musical accompaniment is just fantastic.

the lyrics to this song are nothing short of ridiculous. like, really...when you think about it, there's no purpose to them.

however...they're catchy. that's the only catchy part of this song, the lyrics.

what about the music, you may ask

the music is not catchy, not at all.

the music is F*CKIN AWESOME!
synth and guitar have never gone together as well as they do in this song.

What does need explanation, however, is the fact that this, the original, is far better than any of the covers, most notably the Ataris version.

ZZ Top – Rough Boy Lyrics 17 years ago
HOW does this have no comments yet?

Sure, it's not the traditional ZZ Top sound...but hell, it still rocks!

I sort of get the impression that this song is more about love than sex (something different for this band), and more specifically about loving a woman who ignores or brushes off this love as lust since the band were known for their sexual innuendo.

In any event, a great song.

ZZ Top – Legs Lyrics 17 years ago
Well...first of all, there are two versions of this song out there (that were by ZZ Top)...the album version and the video version. I think the overall sound of the video version is better...more defined, more crisp...

This song is without a doubt about a sexy woman. It's just that simple.

However, if you watch the video, it raises some questions. They're difficult to put into words, but if you watch it (youtube for sure) I have no doubt you'll see that instead of trying to make women look like sex objects, they were almost defending less attractive women. It makes no sense when compared to the lyrics, but that's what it is.

This song is simply fantastic. When/if I get the car I want (late 1970s Lincoln Town Car), I want to wear a black pair of aviator sunglasses and blast this song all the way down the road.

From what I hear, everyone gets that feeling from this song.

ZZ Top – Stages Lyrics 17 years ago
ZZ Top traditionally are more about their SOUND than their LYRICS. IMO, no sane person would say that the overall sound of their music is less than amazing.

Afterburner, the album on which this song appeared, marked a turning point. ZZ Top used synthesizers quite a bit on this album. Some purists say that synth's are not a part of rock...but songs like 'Stages', 'Rough Boy', and Van Halen's 'Jump' all prove this to be incorrect.

Prior to Afterburner, their lyrics were seemingly primarily centered around sex appeal and/or partying. This song in particular is either a clever disguise of that, or is in fact about real love.

Either that, or they're taking the same route as with 'Gimme All Your Lovin', whereas 'lovin' refers to sex.

In any case, this song is good. It's quick paced in the ZZ Top tradition, features plenty of guitar (the ZZ Top trademark), as well as enough synth to keep any 80s music fan entertained.

.38 Special – Back Where You Belong Lyrics 17 years ago
This is an extremely powerful song....38 Special are an amazing band (often not appreciated properly I think), and this is a fine example of how great they are.

We've all (presumably) been in a relationship that went sour because of something we've said, an action we made, or a poorly-made choice to end it without a proper view of the consequences.

This song is clearly about that...it's about a relationship which ended either by a mistake or intentional choice by the 'main character' (ie. singer), after which the main character realized that they had real love and just threw it away. "Back where you belong" could be seen as being back in the relationship.

The singer realizes his/her error, and decides to make an effort to right their wrong(s) ("ain't gonna let it slip away").

Overall, this is a simply amazing song...if you liked this, I recommend Don't Stop Believin' by Journey...almost everyone has heard it, but few people realize how deep the lyrics actually are. Give it a shot, try listening with the lyrics open and you'll see.

U2 – When Love Comes To Town Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't know about the religious stuff, I think it's most likely just used for metaphorical reasons.

This song is amazing. Personally, I think it's about the main character (the person the words would be coming from) having 'slept around' quite a bit during another relationship, possibly one that didn't mean too much to that person. Then, something came over the person and they realized their error and that they actually did love the person they had the relationship with, and this song would be the apology.

Just my $0.02.

Dire Straits – Money For Nothing Lyrics 17 years ago
OK, I will clarify.

By 'intro' I mean the not-at-all musical section of the song (about 1 minute, 10 seconds) where the lyrics are "I want my MTV".

The GUITAR intro (after the garbage intro) is fantastic. With the exception of some ZZ Top numbers, I haven't heard much better guitar work than this song.

And the lyrics DO have no depth. No offence to JustChillen intended, but the only people I've found (in person, not online) who see depth in them are burnt out drug addicts.

DEPTH refers to significant meaning. Something insightful. It's difficult to describe, but easy to identify. And this song doesn't have it. That doesn't mean it's not a great song (did I say that? Hell no), it just means the lyrics have no depth.

JustChillen, you turned what I said around completely.
This is one of my favourite songs (definitely not THE favourity, but one of them), and you made it seem as though I was insulting it. I definitely wasn't.

The simple facts are these:
-Lyrics: no depth
-Music: excellent
-Fag: used as common insult, and as such this version of the song should not exist anymore, unless we're about to dis-associate the term 'faggot' with homosexuals (which I can assure you will not happen anytime soon).

And thank you DonAkide. I agree with what you're saying completely....but, I still say that the lyrics do not have depth. They have a meaning...but not a significant one.

JustChillen, your account will be deleted if you reply offensively again. No, I do not have administrative powers, but less than an inch below this box is a 'report abuse' button which I've used countless times before. This site is for posting opinions on music, not arguing about them in offensive and insulting ways. If you must argue, do it in a formal manner.

Trooper – Raise a Little Hell Lyrics 17 years ago
I think Catie86 is mostly right.

This song seems to be about not just taking life as it comes, but standing up for yourself and making the world conform to you. Either that, or it could be about completely disregarding the 'direction' that others are going and doing the complete opposite.

Personally, I think it's a mix of both.

Really, it is quite lame that this was Trooper's only American hit (Trooper was a Canadian band), and though this is one of their better songs, they do have other good songs that never even made it to American radio.

Anyone not familiar with Trooper should look into some of their other songs, not only this one (in particular, 3 Dressed Up As A 9).

Trooper – Three Dressed Up As A Nine Lyrics 17 years ago
This song clearly is about someone who (in some unknown manner) is trying to make themselves seem better/more important than other people.

That is, the person is NOT actually better/more important than anyone else, but is falsely acting like they are.

I love this song because a lot of people in my life are "threes dressed up as nines"...what teenager doesn't know someone like this?

submissions
Deep Purple – Smoke on the Water Lyrics 17 years ago
OK. A couple points here...

It is COMMON KNOWLEDGE to anyone familiar with Deep Purple or with classic rock in general that this song makes reference to the burning of the casino in Montreaux (sp?), and ONLY to that event (obviously including the recording of this song at that time, duh).

Personally, even though I'm a teenager, I am disgusted with those people who not only use pot but also degrade this song by claiming it refers to pot (be it bong or otherwise).

Like many classic rock songs, the lyrics to this song are relatively meaningless. The MUSIC, however, is fantastic. The opening riff is DEFINITELY one of the best known pieces of rock music ever made.

However, the intro is overshadowed by some better known rock songs. Though I hardly consider Jump (by Van Halen) to be a rock song, it is classified as one. The intro to that song is FAR better known than the intro to this song. There are other songs with very well known intros, riffs, and choruses...but this is definitely a good one.

Again...NO DRUG REFERENCES IN THIS SONG. Geez people get it right. Know your music before you talk about it.

Dire Straits – Money For Nothing Lyrics 17 years ago
As far as this songs meaning to me, it's difficult to say. I have a couple approaches:

1. The section in which the word 'faggot' appears is offensive (not necessarily to me) by today's standards, but in the 80s was used as a general insult, not always referring to gay people. For this reason, I think that only the radio copy should exist today.

2. Lyrics: I think the lyrics to this song have no depth. They have no true meaning, symbolic or direct. They show a typical standpoint of a hardworking, possibly low-income blue collar worker.

3. Music: I think the music is fantastic.

I don't know what Jayd is saying; I plan to use CoolEdit to cut out the intro. I think it's the worst part of the song.

I think the reason I like this song so much is the same reason that I like Smoke On The Water (Deep Purple) so much...the music, not the lyrics.

This song and that one are comparable in the sense that the music is great but the lyrics are practically meaningless.

OK. First, nobody should visit the MEATSPIN site. It tried to activate a known-to-be-dangerous file download that installs a new ActiveX codec in Internet Explorer. I use Firefox which is how I knew it happened. Not to mention that if you're a straight guy you won't like the site anyway.

People seem to have the genre messed up. This is one of the first true HiNRG songs ever made. HiNRG is a form of New Wave. New Wave is distantly related to electronica, and is a type of electronica but is actuallly very different. HiNRG = "High Energy".

I was debating including this, seeing as it is completely irrelevant, but it may be an effective way to slap some homophobes in the face:

Pete Burns was/is either gay or has an alternative gender identity. This song was one of the first songs to be successful in the music industry that featured a gay theme (and it does; the lyrics are from one man to another). Remember, I said ONE of the first, not the first. There were others to come before it.

Personally, I see this as just another bouncy HiNRG song. If you're feeling kinda down, it can bring your mood up a bit just because of how 'light' and 'bouncy' the music is.

People who are really into other forms of electronica *that feature lyrics* really owe a lot to songs like this. New Wave is what started the electronic music type, and HiNRG inspired a lot of 90s pop. Pop is one of the genres that are commonly 'dissected' and used in electronic music (you never hear a mixed Van Halen track coming from a club when you drive by).

I'll be keeping an eye on this page after I make this post. Any comments that reflect negativity towards gays will be reported. If you're planning on making such a post, you should feel disgusted with yourself.
