Sting – Love Is The Seventh Wave Lyrics 5 years ago
One may think Sting intended (veiledly) to send a message of love to Margaret Thatcher - the very controversial and very arrogant Prime Minister of Great Britain during the 1980s. She would be the figure of a bossy woman who pretentiously want to control everything and everyone around her described in the line "In the empire of the senses / You're the queen of all you survey / All the cities all the nation / Everything that falls your way".

INXS – Bitter Tears Lyrics 17 years ago
I think it's about a relationship which is fated to flop just because her resentment ('bitter tears') upon him has become stronger than her love for him indeed while he has insisted on being with her until this moment when he has finally realized how rusty their initial chemistry is. He thought actually he has always been a good lover to her but he was totally wrong about this ("And I thought I was doing no wrong").

In relation to the 1st part of the lyrics, I think he's saying to himself that all his tries for trying to save this relationship were unsuccessful and now he has realised that it's time to getting out of it since he deserves to live a relationship full of love ('the best in life') again, despite the fact he still feels love for her, but now he can believe this feeling will die as soon as he starts a new freshing romance ("The rest just begins / To fade by itself"). He was lost in a 'mist' where he simply couldn't see how loveless their relationship was on the last times, thus it's not worth it anymore... He was actually hesitating about leaving her since it didn't seem an easy thing for doing it, but now he can see how much this will be good for both of them.

"In the hour
Of your needs
Lips are trembling
Cause your gonna be free
Realise what were doing here
The time is right to kill your fears"

At the same time, on this 2nd part he's convincing her to release him from this relationship, since they were just hurting each other ("Realise what were doing here"). Then she cries ("Lips are trembling"), but she'll be free too if she win her own fears to start another relationship.

"Push away those bitter tears
Thats what they call doing no wrong"

On these last 2 lines, he concludes that what she did wrong was to use emotional blackmail for keeping him together with her for such a long time. Then he said to her "Get a new life for yourself, girl, 'cos I'm taking another ship!".

Pet Shop Boys – It Couldn't Happen Here Lyrics 17 years ago
It seems to me Neil is talking about two people (a man and a woman, I suppose) who went to another town for trying to get a better life, but their plans have fallen through and nothing has really happened as they expected it when they came there. And now the male character who talks at 1st person is exposing what happened to him and specially to her confident woman friend ("In six inch heels, quoting magazines"), who has decided to work as a prostitute for paying her bills ("Go all the way, you knew you could" and "Who pays your bills? How come you came this far?"). Therefore, she has lost a considerable part of their self-esteem while she's trying to survive on this not a little glamourous reality, even though she has always found a way for pretending not to see the 'scars' she has got until today ("I don't expect to talk in terms of sense / Our dignity and injured innocence / It contradicts your battle-scars / Still healed, so far").

"We've drunk too much, and woke up everyone" and "We've laughed too loud, and woke up everyone"

Well, their stylish posture was changed by a new life full of drinks and loud laughs... In short, they have lost their initial pose on having to face the difficulties on this new place which is even harder than the one where they came from...

And finally in the line "We've found ourselves back where we started from", he shows the real dimension of their flop there...

Depeche Mode – Halo Lyrics 17 years ago
The word 'shackles' (on meaning "anything that serves to prevent freedom of procedure, thought") in the beginning ot this terrific song already show what it's all about. He's trying to convince her about the 'truth' of his convinction that they can do whatever they want for having pleasure ("All love's luxuries / Are here for you and me"), however she's quite hesitant for believing in his words and I think it's basically because she's a very devoted religious person. Therefore her mind is living a permanent&terrible conflict ("The discomfort in your seat / And in your head it's worse") since every time she has tried to correspond to his expectations she feels terribly guilty , despite she doesn't take herself as a 'blessed' person at all, on the contrary she probably sees herself as a unforgiveable sinner all the time("You wear guilt / Like shackles on your feet / Like a halo in reverse").

Nevertheless, on its chorus he tells her that no matter how apocalyptical their fate can be, they deserve to live their love intensely.

"Bring your chains
Your lips of tragedy
And fall into my arms"

Well, he seems to give up to erase her 'brainwash' on this last verse, but he'll never give up her anyway...

Erasure – Joan Lyrics 17 years ago
Another great example of how brilliant Andy Bell can be as lyricist!

Well, he's talking about a young girl who tends to live her life without caring about the social impositions and I assume it's called Joan 'cos that girl is being compared to Joan of Arc's life, who also dared to defy the social conventions from her age.

"Power generation
You live up your life and it feels like FIRE, woah
Suspended in animation
A TRICK OF THE LIGHT and it drives you higher, wo-ah

Blind vision blind faith
You really can be sold
If you dare to disagree"

He's showing to her on this verse and this bridge that she has been deceived by a specific event that happened on her life since that one simply made her believe excessively in her own force to beat the society where she lives for deffending some radical positions. I mean she's simply wrong about the importance of that event and now she's thinking everything will run according to her own will on her life, no matter what the society will think about it... But she's definitely wrong just because the society can simply get rid of her if she insists on this 'misbehaviour'...

"Psychic celebration
Look up in the stars and see Venus rising, woah
Rapture, fascination
You live for the night and your own desire, wo-ah

Blind vision blind faith
You really can't rely
On what they tell you for effect"

On this 2nd part, he's telling her for not leaving herself to be impressed by a couple of exaggerated praises to her courageous posture...

In relation to its refrain, Andy just pretends to disapprove of the way how she leads her own life since he doesn't want she has a tragic fate just like Joan Of Arc...

New Order – 60 Miles An Hour Lyrics 17 years ago
He's a guy who put himself in a very complicated situation just because he has driven his 'car' at top speed, I mean he has commited a lot of crazy things on his life! And that's the reason why he wrote the line "I've had the devil around for tea". Meanwhile his lover has taken a calmer life, so now he's knocking on her door for finding some comfort ("I don't know if I told you / But I'm seeking sanctuary"), despite the fact he's not exactly regret for this behaviour, on the contrary, he seems to want to take her together with him along one of his crazy 'trips'...

"Can't you see that I can't relax?
When I saw you in my rear view
You could have stopped me in my tracks"

I think he's suggesting she's the only person in the whole world able to make him reduce his 'speed'.

Regarding its chorus ("I'll be there for you when you want me to / I'll stand by your side like I always do / In the dead of night it'll be alright / Because I'll be there for you when you want me to"), I think it's a quite shameless one if you compare it to the rest of the lyrics, since he admits he's making her suffer on living his life at this way, but at the same time he's telling her everything tends to be fine in the end of the day...

"Why don't you run over here and rescue me?
You could drive down in your car
Why don't we both take a ride and turn that key
We'll drive at sixty miles an hour"

Another shameless verse... He's simply begging her to go to where he is for saving him from himself, but she cannot accompany his crazy rhythm (!)... This Barney...

Blondie – Screaming Skin Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the use of the adjective 'slaughtered' and the nouns 'fur' and 'hide', which refer normally to animals, show how voluptuous this woman is! And, on these lyrics, she is simply justifying all her attitudes for having fun with her own sexual desire and when she says that "we've got the hemo-dynamic connection" she meant we all have this 'burning' blood inside of us or yet we all are human enough to surrender to our deepest sexual desires. And she doesn't hesitate anymore in answering back who treat her as 'an inferior person' because of this ("Don't call me germ / Swallowing my pride no longer").

Regarding the word 'dread', I assume it's used for meaning she's still looking for stronger emotions on her life. I think she is the kind of woman who loves 'wild' guys...

Siouxsie and the Banshees – Kiss Them For Me Lyrics 17 years ago
Yep, it's totally inspired by Jayne Mansfield's life indeed. From the 1st to the last verse. And as far as I know, she was a very glamorous Hollywood star, who was obsessed for being as famous as her source of inspiration: Marilyn Monroe.

"No party she'd not attend
no invitation she wouldn't send
transfixed by the inner sound
of your promise to be found "

I think these lines serve to show how much all her vanity controlled her attitudes on that 'road' bound for fame. She didn't think about anything else except for finding a way for being noticed by some big shot from Hollywood. And probably its 'bridge' ("Nothing or no-one will ever / make me let you down") is expressing some kind of promise that was made to her by a big shot on that age about her 'big' chances for being a real 'star' in Hollywood. And she would be an invulnerable one, since nothing or no one would be able to take the pedestal under her feet... Well, she was very famous indeed, but her reign in Hollywood didn't last long and soon she saw herself in the ostracism.

"in the fountains pink champagne
someone carving their devotion
in the heart shaped pool of fame"

These lines are talking about her pink mansion in Sunset Boulevard (the 'Pink Palace') and it really owned a fountain that spurted pink champagne and a "pink heart-shaped swimming pool".

Regarding its last verse ("On the road to New Orleans / a spray of stars hit the screen / as the 10th impact shimmered / the forbidden candles beamed"), it's about her death on a car crash while she was going to New Orleans for appear in a TV interview. I think Siouxsie used a lot of 'morbid humour' on these last lines, specially because she called that car where Jayne was on that tragic day as 'a spray of stars' and she probably used a lot of hair spray... In addition, Siouxsie talks about Jayne's death as her last big moment to cause an 'impact' on the audience while the candles for protecting her soul are forbidden just because she wasn't exactly 'a good example' for being followed... Well, almost anyone is indeed...

Regarding its refrain, you just can understand it after reading that last lyrics. I mean she was delayed 'cos she died on the way, so all that she can do now is to send kiss for everyone who used to love her when she was alive.

The Cardigans – Starter Lyrics 17 years ago
It seems a song about someone who is reaching the maturity after going through a very turbulent time while she simply didn't get enough support for standing it ("Lifetimes of changes / A strange generation / Explanations never come in time"). I assume she's subtly making also a criticism upon the lack of dialogue between sons & parents nowadays and this can be one of the main reasons why these same sons (and daughters) have walked by harder ways many times. Anyway, she seems to be prepared to leave all those bad events behind now, despite she recognizes how strong those memories are still on her mind ("This is the age / When my past should be gone / But it's just stronger than the aims I have"). And, as it's never easy to start life from the scratch, she will do it on slow steps' until she feels herself strong enough to make this change on her life in an absolute way ("New beginning again / A bit closer / New beginning again / A little bit closer / New beginning again / A bit closer to the end"), since she definitely doesn't want to leave any chance for her past to come back at this time. Besides, she decides to start this new 'journey' far away from everyone she knew until today. A new place for living, new people for knowing and, as a result of that, new chances to be a better kind, as she said herself. Therefore now she really is a starter!

He's telling her that she has overrated her own capacity for guiding their relationship. She has actually turned his life to something darker and he has realized she will take him to a nervous breakdown sooner or later if he insists on letting her to guide him. I assume he thought she was the cure that he was needing for healing his own emotional hurts at a first impression until the day he could see she is sicker than him indeed... So now he's trying to take himself to a 'better place' and he hopes that she will follow him ("What needs have been / You'll realize / I've found myself / In bluer skies"), specially because he knows how much she needs his support ("Can we dissolve tonight/ Held by your hungry arms").

Tears for Fears – Cold Lyrics 17 years ago
A very bitter song, I think... A woman thought she found the man of her life, but, as time goes by, she gets absolutely tired of standing his apparent coldness. She put so much expectancies upon his shoulder... At a first sight, she thought his coldness was just a spiritual thing, but it was actually an incredible difficulty for being loved.

By his turn, he thought she could teach him how to be warmer on feeling her affection ("Don't you know that love is work"), but she was so disappointed about him that she betrayed him ("Your reputation lies not in your eyes, but those who dare / Will bite the hand that feeds when it don't meet your needs). And this total lack of communication&understanding between them has turned this relationship impossible ("no heat on the horizon guess I'm cold / There'll be no comprimising").

"The coldest shoulder cast in metal
Frozen to the bone
To rely on hook, line and sinker
What a sinker
Sinking like a stone
You'd be better off alone"

Thus, she simply gets rid of him on 'killing' him (in a metaphorical way, I suppose) and he's convinced now his fate is to be eternally cold...

"Attempt to grow and fix undone
And I am the way it's all to scale
We're all companions on which we sail"

Morcheeba – Part Of The Process Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh, I think the word 'tear' on the line "We're taught to tear" probably means "to move or behave with force, violent haste, or energy" and not the meaning that I gave previously, since it fits better to the rest of the lyrics. I mean those urban people have all their energy focussed on being successful and all their steps are given to this direction, no matter what's happening around them. They simply 'run over' what is blocking their way.

Morcheeba – Part Of The Process Lyrics 17 years ago
Great song indeed! I love Skye!!! I think its lyrics owns such an original approach about a fundamental urban question nowadays: the fact that many of us who live in the big cities are so prepared to get success on our personal lives that we're losing that human touch on becoming more anxious and needlessly tense because of that 'obsession'. And this has also make this usual kind of urban people careless about the bad things that have happened around them ("Behind the bomb, no one cares") while they haven't even enjoyed what they have got with their efforts ("You smash they grab 'til it's gone").

Regarding the line "We all love looking down", she's obviously talking that those people love to feel themselves more important than they really are while they are desperately fighting for being successful.

"How can we show, how to feel / Situation ain't so real" and "We're taught to tear"

I think those lines serve to express how hard it has been to those urban people for being in contact with their own emotions. They don't know anymore when they should cry (their tears seem to be programmed by themselves or possibly by TV) or the size of their own problems, since they simply overrate these ones because of their (big) fear of being flopped on this search for reaching 'the top of the world'.

The Cure – Doing the Unstuck Lyrics 17 years ago
1st of all: It's quite strange to see Bob Smith writting such a happy lyrics! He probably was in a (VERY) good mood when he did this one. Well, I think his fans tend to believe he's a dark person all the way, but this one is a proof that (maybe) he has been just played the character of the terribly sad/ultra-melancholic boy all this time... It's a kind of involuntary funny thing to read lines as "For rip-zipping button-popping" coming out from Bob's lipstick mouth.

Anyway, it's a lovely, lovely, lovely pop song and it talks about a couple who have lived in an almost complete depression while the girl has considered everything is lost for them and nothing is able to take them from this situation indeed. Then one day the boy decides for some reason that they can do everything works on their lives, it's just a question of relaxing and changing the way how they see their own lives. They don't need anymore to be those sad ones they used to be just because life is always expecting an opportunity for smiling to you and you just need to smile back to it, no matter how much sorrow you have carried inside your heart. And he has finally discovered this and he's trying to convince her about this truth in a very emphatic way!

Simply Red – Never Never Love Lyrics 17 years ago
This song reflects the present situation of romantic relationships between two people, which is far from being the same than before since it seems more and more evident that 'love' isn't anymore the target for being reached by them. I mean many (urban) people just want to have fun without having a serious commitment nowadays and all this independence has made those people ask themselves about the real relevance of that 'romantic love' that our parents used to live on their own lives.

Depeche Mode – The Love Thieves Lyrics 17 years ago
I totally agree with r-e-volution's opinion here. I mean it really seems something antireligious. See, I'm far from being an antireligious person, specially because I know how much religion have been useful for controlling our 'animal' side. I guess if it doesn't exist religion we all would live in such a worse way than we are living now... Nevertheless, I think many people really tend to be often manipulated by other pretentiously 'blessed' ones.

Anyway, I think Martin is suggesting that we will never be good enough to any religion for deserving all the love from 'Heaven' since we are supposed to be not entirely 'holy' in our human essence ("All the clerks and the tailors / The sharks and the sailors / All good at their trades / But they'll always be failures"), so we are constantly needing to 'stole' love (meaning: understanding and compassion) for supporting our 'inferiority'. Therefore we would be slaves from religion on this perspective. And even the most faithful disciples are ready to fall into a temptation sooner or later ("...And feast on your holiness / As long as they're able"), so they also are 'love thieves' like the rest of us...

Erasure – Catch 22 Lyrics 17 years ago
1st of all: I assume Andy wrote this one for sounding quite ironic about romantic affairs that should find their 'happy end' in the altar, specially because of its title.

Well, a boy and a girl have lived a romance full of ups and downs, since he wasn't exactly well-meaning about the future of their relationship (he was in a dilemma about his real intentions upon her) and he wasn't exactly faithful to her (his misdemeanours). But he has finally discovered how much he loves her and now he's prepared to take this relationship to the last consequences: the marriage ("No misdemeanour / There's a ring upon my finger"), despite he's not so sure about this yet ("If I seem nervous will you show me what to do? / And does the world deserve us?") while he has realized this decision is really taking shape ("Application rushing through").

Regarding his 'worldly goods', this makes me think that maybe she's quite opportunist and maybe that's the main reason why she has been so understanding about him ("We close our eyes and chase away the sorry things / You make it easy for me, life is but a dream").

New Order – Your Silent Face Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm far from being sure about the point of this one, but I'm gonna try to find it anyway...

Well, I think it's about a person who is trying to find a new meaning for his own life after witnessing (or even taking part in) something shameful ("Rise and fall of shame / A search that shall remain / We asked you what you'd seen / You said you didn't care"), so he put himself in a kind of meditational trip, which has really bothered his friends ("The sign that leads the way / The path we can not take / You've caught me at a bad time / So why don't you piss off") 'cos now he's living a life in 'black&white' and practically without communication for trying 'to see the light in the end of the tunnel' at last.

Regarding more specifically these lines below, I think Barney meant he's so busy at that 'trip' that he cannot even for a second consider other opinions, nevertheless their friends still have some hope about his return to mental sanity.

"A thought that never changes
Remains a stupid lie
It's NEVER been quite the same
No hearing or breathing
No movement, no colors
Just silence"

And their friends are almost giving up for trying to bring him back to the reality ("Sound formed in a vacuum / May seem a waste of time / It's ALWAYS been just the same")...

In short, I think Barney is making a mockery of that 'guru' thing, despite the solemn tone of its melody...

R.E.M. – World Leader Pretend Lyrics 17 years ago
I tended to agree with 'the narrator' pov here. I mean it really seems something about facing up to personal fears that you have created&fed along your life. And as more you take time to start this inner war, more those fears have grown inside yourself, and, at the same time, only you know all the tricks that you have used to deceive yourself on putting the beginning of that 'war' off ("I've a rich understanding of my finest defenses / I proclaim that claims are left unstated, / I demand a rematch / I decree a stalemate / I divine my deeper motives / I recognize the weapons / I've practiced them well. I fitted them myself"), thus only you are able to break this vicious circle where you put yourself ("It's amazing what devices you can sympathize...empathize / This is my mistake. Let me make it good / I raised the walls, and I will be the one to knock it down").

"You fill in the mortar. You fill in the harmony" and "This is my life / And this is my time / I have been given the freedom / To do as I see fit"

So it's only in your own hands the 'key' for opening that 'door' which will make you leave all those 'ghosts' behind for finding some inner peace at last. Or you can choose to keep on carrying heavy 'weights' upon your back if you decide to be an eternal victim of yourself.

I also enjoy this song a lot and it really owns a 'nocturnal' atmosphere, not only in terms of lyrics but in terms of sound too. Well, I'm a big fan from this band but I hardly, hardly can get the point on most Ian's lyrics (well, I'm not exactly fluent in English anyway...). This being said, I can try to expose my impression about this - surprise, surprise! - enigmatic one. I think Ian is showing to us that when the night falls our real identities are revealed to ourselves and we feel free to be who we really are ("...impure disguise / our vulgar sons...") and to think about what should really matter in our own lives ("...and you and me / us realized, our bigger themes..."), since the dark of the night would force us to make a big movement of introspection. Besides, the night owns that perfect characteristic for leaving us to be as intense as you can be ("...whatever burns, burns eternally / so take me in turns internally / when I'm on fire, my body will be / forever yours / nocturnal me...").

Neneh Cherry – Woman Lyrics 17 years ago
It sounds as a pamphletary one about the woman's condition in this world. I mean Neneh is talking to every women who have been forced to live under man's oppression without finding a space for expressing their infinity love. More specifically, she's talking about an African woman who has been chased by men who have taken everything from her except for her inner strenght. And she has been chased just because she owns some kind of mystical power ("And for my healing wits / I've been called a witch") which lets her heal people and it seems to me the men from her 'tribe' fear the popularity that she has got with this, since they would never admit to share their power with a woman 'witch'. It's a kind of jealous feeling, I think. So she's condemned to death on fire and every good things she has made must be forgotten by everyone for not making her a martyr.

"I've died so many times
I'm only just coming to life."

I assume she's talking she is like Phoenix bird, not meaning she will be born again in flesh&blood, but meaning it'll always exist another women like her who will be prepaired to try to spread love around this godless land...

Oops, I did it again. When I wrote "...a woman who is feeding the feeling of revenge on her heart on realizing how bastard his man is.", of course I meant "on realizing how bastard her man is.".

I think it can be taken almost as a feminist song, since it talks about a woman who is feeding the feeling of revenge on her heart on realizing how bastard his man is. And now she is able to put him under her wings ("I might be weak child, but I'll give you strength") for trying to take everything that she wants from him, including his infidelity, until the day she can release herself from him ("One of these mornings the chain is gonna break / But up until then, yeah, I'm gonna take all I can take"). She says:"From now on your vagabond heart is exclusively a property of mine!".

Stevie Wonder – Stay Gold Lyrics 17 years ago
I take this one as a (wonderful) 'poem' about becoming older&mature, but not necessarily under a sad perspective if you are a realistic person... I mean he's saying to us for not trying to hold our oldest&precious memories in an obsessive way as expecting all those magic events could happen again, but for leaving these same memories come to our mind only for bringing light to our lives, for making us smile, for turning us less serious than we are at present... Then we become gold again.

Erasure – Phantom Bride Lyrics 17 years ago
I would like to add the following correction to the last lines (after the 2nd bridge) of this one:

Don't you cry, don't you cry
Let me wipe away the tears from your eyes
Don't you cry, don't you cry
Let me wipe away the teardrops from your eyes

And in her mind she'd drift away
A secret place to steal away

Don't you cry, don't you cry
Let me wipe away the tears from your eyes
Don't you cry, don't you cry
Let me wipe away the tears, no more, no more lies

Don't you cry, don't you cry
Let me wipe away the tears from your eyes
Don't you cry, don't you cry
Let me wipe away the tears, no more, no more lies
Don't you cry, don't you cry
Let me wipe away the tears, let me wipe away the tears

Depeche Mode – The Bottom Line Lyrics 17 years ago
He adores her intensely but she insists on playing with his sincere feelings on keeping him under her whims. And he's definitely not interested in knowing her real intentions or in explaining his attitudes related to her. No matter how silly he can be on acting at this way, he's determined to go ahead with this pathetic behaviour until the end 'cos he simply cannot stop himself from doing it. A very understandable behaviour when you are really in love. It's not clear to me that she loves him or not, anyhow it's a beautifully romantic song that probably just makes some real sense for those people who know what love is able to do with our minds.
