Ra Ra Riot – Ghost Under Rocks Lyrics | 14 years ago |
dead link, try http://www.andrewmaury.net/remix/ (it's the bottom one) |
The Antlers – Kettering Lyrics | 14 years ago |
The album, to me, seems either A.) told (sung) from various viewpoints, like a modernist novel, or B.) purposely blurry in its character relationships so as to make its themes more universal. There's really no way to definitively decide exactly what's going on; if Pitchfork's correct and the patient is a child, how could she have had an abortion (as heard in "Bear")? And if she's the patient of the speaker (singer), how come he knew her before she got sick (as heard in "Two")? It's impossible to pinpoint specifics and better just to take in the emotions and themes of the album as a whole,in my opinion. |
Girls – Ghost Mouth Lyrics | 14 years ago |
I hear: "I like the bad boys in the BIG TOWNS" |
Arrah and the Ferns – Southern Comfort Lyrics | 15 years ago |
This (absolutely astoundingly awesome) song seems to be the cousin of Emo Phillips. The whole album gets progressively more serious and spiritual as it goes on, and this song is the crux of that. While Emo Phillips is a humorous take on death-oriented youngsters, this is a reflection on life and death and the potential for pain you have to cause others by living a lonely life and dying too young/alone. Evan is a Vegan is one of the best debuts in a long, long time (along with Any Other City by Life Without Buildings), and Arrah and the Ferns will no doubt earn much-deserved cult fame soon. Long live the memory of this magnificent band! |
Destroyer – My Favorite Year Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think that's actually Dan's voice doing the falsetto-- he does the same thing a lot in his songs with the New Pornos. Also, that last line-- wouldn't it be, "My shithouse has been torched by fascists," referring to the world described at the beginning? Anyway, amazing song with minimalist but potent lyrics. If there were any justice in the world, this would break Destroyer into the mainstream (although I'm not sure Mr. Bejar really wants that). |
The Velvet Underground – Ride Into The Sun Lyrics | 16 years ago |
There's an extremely rare version of this song (live? demo? outtake?) with very different lyrics that can be found on a few torrent download sites. I'll post the words at some point. |
The Fiery Furnaces – Navy Nurse Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is so awesome! It truly encompasses the FF's entire career, highlighting everything great about it: Blueberry Boat's fractured globe-trotting tragicomedy, Gallowsbird's mundane insanity, Bitter Tea's art-rock quasi-techno, even Choir's detailed, exaggerated story-telling. Plus a new hard-rocking edge of its own! I no longer worry that the Fiery Furnaces will run out of ideas; I just wonder how anyone else will be able to keep up. |
The New Pornographers – Entering White Cecilia Lyrics | 16 years ago |
maybe, "I ran to the door, looked around I fell to the floor -- Cecilia was down there!" I'm probably wrong because I don't have the lyrics sheet or anything, but that's how I hear it. Anyway, great song! I have a wildebeest named after Cecilia, and she loves hearing it. |
Ballboy – Avant Garde Music Lyrics | 16 years ago |
the part about the Queen is also based on a true story. Gordon explained it during a performance: http://youtube.com/watch?v=V78vkpAJYls |
Belle & Sebastian – Love on the March Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song is incredible! It makes me so happy to hear it. The vocals are exactly what B&S vocals should be-- lots of stuart, a fair amount of everybody else. I love how they can branch out and try different styles, nail them, and then try something else. The lyrics are great too and fit perfectly with the samba-y style. |
Arcade Fire – When Lenin Was Little Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Absolutely. Lenin was the communist (not really the same "left" as the one on America's current political spectrum) who seized the revolution. He travelled secretly from Switzerland to Russia in WWI because he realized the revolution was happening/about to take form. He overtook it and brought the Bolsheviks into power. He had a stroke at 52 and died at 54; it was then that Stalin ("Man of Steel") took power and REALLY fucked everything up. A lot of people glamorize Lenin, which shows their ignorance. The death camps during the Russian Revolution (comparable to those during the Holocaust) started under Lenin's rule. He was a mass murdered. Hope this helps! |
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Love Song No. 7 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The actual lyrics, I think, are "But it's the way that you talk And it's the way that you move. Gravity's one thing and Gravity's something but How's about coming down?" Otherwise, I'm lost. Beautiful song though. |
Belle & Sebastian – The State I Am In Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Dog on Wheels sounds a little cleaner and more basic-- more like it went directly from Stuart's head to the CD. the Tigermilk version is the product of a full band: Stevie's (always) excellent guitar work, the more expanded sound, etc. This makes sense, because the Dog on Wheels EP was only recorded with a few members of Belle and Sebastian, plus a bunch of other non-BS people. I tend to prefer the band's sound as a whole, so to me, Tigermilk is better. |
Belle & Sebastian – Asleep on a Sunbeam Lyrics | 17 years ago |
1.) okay, what an idiot I am, of course this is Sarah singing, when I posted that I had just started listening to B&S. btw, Sarah's stuff with the band is way better than Isobel's, imo 2.) maybe this is more about camping just on the surface, but really it's talking about the idea of sort of "getting out" of one's life for a while? the whole thing has an escapist feel, and it sounds like she (the singer) is waiting for a significant other to get out of his current situation so they can escape together. just my thoughts. |
Camera Obscura – Phil and Don Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this song is really essential because it was recorded after Camera Obscura had adopted their new sound (as heard on LGOoTC) but before John Henderson left the band. This is basically what all of LGOoTC would sound like had he not departed. I mourn for him. |
Camera Obscura – Lemon Juice and Paper Cuts Lyrics | 17 years ago |
what a great song! should have gone on the album. follows the fasion of B**** and S******** with great EPs |
Belle & Sebastian – Beyond the Sunrise Lyrics | 17 years ago |
and it's definitely not terrific |
Belle & Sebastian – Beyond the Sunrise Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think this song gets unfairly pegged as wretched. sure, it's not great, and doesn't fit at all with the rest of the Belle and Sebastian catalogue, but it's actually interesting if not terrific. Isobel has said that this should have gone on the Gentle Waves record that she was making at the same time, and the whole thing sounds like an early version of her Ballad of the Broken Seas. |
Belle & Sebastian – Put the Book Back on the Shelf Lyrics | 17 years ago |
plus gorgeous cello and violin, and AMAZING lyrics that define the feeling of being lost in society. truly terrific. are YOU happy with yourself? |
Camera Obscura – Eighties Fan Lyrics | 17 years ago |
five years and two albums later, 90% of people still know CO from this one song |
Belle & Sebastian – This Is Just a Modern Rock Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this is the song to which all other B&S songs are now compared. it's pretty much a landmark in the band's career |
Neko Case – Margaret vs. Pauline Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Here's my interpretation: "they smooth her hair with cinnamon waves and they placed an ingot in her breast to burn, cool and collected" The morticians beautified Pauline for her funeral "but she’ll never be as clean as the cool side of satin, pauline" Margaret's jealous of Pauline, who's dead in a coffin (cool side of satin) and in eternal peace "Everything's so easy for Pauline" once again, everything's easier when you're dead |
Belle & Sebastian – Lord Anthony Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Melted Toblerone under your dress and Blue mascara running over your eye could Anthony be a crossdresser? confusing but amazing song |
Belle & Sebastian – Funny Little Frog Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I just see it as an obsessive guy who's in love with this girl but gets so choked up he can't talk to her and is a little stalkerish |
The Fiery Furnaces – Two Fat Feet Lyrics | 17 years ago |
or any fat person... |
The Fiery Furnaces – Bow Wow Lyrics | 17 years ago |
do either matt or eleanor even have a dog? actually, who cares. I love playing the piano part to this song. |
The Fiery Furnaces – Two Fat Feet Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This song has some of the most disgusting white-trash type imagery in it. I love it. also, the piano thing that goes runs through the verse-- classic. |
The Fiery Furnaces – Whistle Rhapsody Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Matt has described this song as being the segue between Bitter Tea and Rehearsing my Choir-- this would end and Choir would begin because the two albums were meant to be released together |
The Fiery Furnaces – Asthma Attack Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this is about when Eleanor once heard someone in her office with asthma talking about shark attacks in jamaica. she said it would give her an asthma attack. http://www.faceculture.nl/fiery/index.htm# |
The Fiery Furnaces – Duffer St. George Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Duffer St. George is a sweater shop in London. it was actually one of the FF's first songs. it was created when Eleanor had just come back from london and was telling matt about how Duffer St. George sweaters were £100 and all the 'cool' kids had them http://www.faceculture.nl/fiery/index.htm# |
Fiona Apple – Extraordinary Machine Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Also, there's a lot of misconception about this album. let me make a feeble attempt to clear some of it up. 1.) The record label did not reject the album. Apple wasn't pleased with the songs and wanted to give it another go. 2.) The record label did not made her work with Mike Elizondo to make it more mainstreem. the new album was actually produced by Elizondo and Brian Kehew, a friend of Jon Brion who recommended him to work with Apple. 3.) The bootleg version was not the definitive Brion version. Brion has struck out against those songs, saying they were tweaked and not what he recorded. hope that clears a little bit of it up. for more go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extraordinary_Machine or just do a few google searches. |
Fiona Apple – Extraordinary Machine Lyrics | 17 years ago |
My most quoted song ever, easily. "But I'm good at being uncomfortable so I can't stop changing all the time" "I'm an extraordinary machine" "I seem to you to seek a new disaster every day" "I am the baby of the family It happens so everybody cares And wear the sheep's clothes while they chaperone" "If there was a better way to go then it would find me" "But he's no good at being uncomfortable so he can't stop staying exactly the same" and, of course, "I make the most of it, I'm an extraordinary machine" I seriously use all of those in everyday conversation. people think it to be quite pretentious, but it soo works. |
Jenny Lewis – Rise Up with Fists!!! Lyrics | 17 years ago |
she gave an interview in a magazine a few months ago and talked about how the album is about her sort of grappling with religion. I think it's pretty much self-explanatory. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – The King of Carrot Flowers Pts. 2 and 3 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I've seen a lot of posts about a section of this song that simply doesn't exist, at least not on the original album. On the Amazon/iTunes version, Part II is I Love You Jesus Christ through The Days We Are Awaiting and part III is up and over till the end. it seems that Jittery Joes version has an extension. also a google add on this page says "Searching for Jesus? We'll pay you $300 Right Now for a Quick Jesus Survey!" Ahh, religion today |
Beulah – All Points North Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I LOVE this song-- I have it downloaded on my computer and listen to it all the time. probably my favorite chorus combo of music and words for the last part, which is wrong. it should be let's visit young unwed moms we'll dance to some new wave songs and ignore each other all the while because we made a lot of new friends but we'll still cry ourselves to sleep perfect |
Belle & Sebastian – Asleep on a Sunbeam Lyrics | 17 years ago |
that is isobel campbell singing, right? I would assume it is, except I thought she left the band in 2002 and this was released to 2003 |
Camera Obscura – Tears for Affairs Lyrics | 17 years ago |
obviously one of my favorite songs of the moment. love the accordian and soft vocals and call and response |
Beulah – If We Can Land a Man on the Moon, Surely I Can Win Your Heart Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think the general consensus is that this song functions on two levels. One is a sort of Fuck You to the critics, sarcastically saying that they don't care what they write or do because Beulah will do exactly what Beulah wants to do. However, on another level it could be a love song, pure and simple, the type that Beulah has professed to hate. Also it's "I'll fight" at the end |
