Kisses – Midnight Lover Lyrics 13 years ago
Here's my interpretation of the lyrics:

You know she's never gone for so very long.
And when I see the makings of a queen, I wonder.

How if the time is wrong for you to come along,
Cuz when the day gets captured in a way, I should [???]...

I would like to take you out,
I would like to take you out
For a nice steak dinner, just me and you (x2).

If I was younger then, would I have been her friend?
It's such a miracle how life comes back around again.
And in the witching hour,
When all the world goes out,
I turn to you my love,
My one and only midnight love,
Midnight lover, ooh.

I would like to take you out,
I would like to take you out
For a nice steak dinner, just me and you (x2).

Robyn – Call Your Girlfriend Lyrics 13 years ago
We've seen Robyn craft perfect songs from the perspective of the jilted girlfriend on "Dancing on My Own" and from a more conventional one-on-one romance on tracks like "Hang With Me" and "Indestructible." But here Robyn is the other girl but with all the same intensely-felt emotion. Her lyrics have such a sense of conviction that it makes it sound like she has been in this position before and that this song is her way of moving past that for good.

Chew Lips – Eight Lyrics 14 years ago
Such confusion can't be good,
And though my house is made of wood,
I can throw stones if I please.
Can't set fire my gathered leaves.
Where'd you go, I wouldn't say.
Always been a mile away.

A high-speed chase on your wedding day.
Give and take are all the same.
Cannons shoot on grassy knoll (?),
A battlefield of love and war.

Empty bottle on your bed,
Broken-hearted, innocent.
Where you've been, I wouldn't go.
Just another story told.

A high-speed chase on your wedding day.
Give and take are all the same.
Cannons shoot on grassy knoll (?),
A battlefield of love and war.

The Rosebuds – Border Guards Lyrics 15 years ago
Corrections:

"This hot and dusty road is where all things fall apart.
You were my sleepy waitress in this vacant trailer park.
On a calm March night, they left their drunken shouts behind
And carried you away, to find work, a better life.

I hear the stars talking from the tin roof of my home,
Placing bets on the emigrants, on how far they might go.
I wonder where you stay - are you out there all alone?
We can dance without a mask (?), just come back from where you've gone.

I wonder where you are - did you ever make it through?
The desert was a curse, lying still in wait for you.
There's a coldness were you walked and a silence in my yard.
How can I not see you now? Goddamn the border guards."

Such a wonderful song. Geographically confined lovers, very beautiful.

Friendly Fires – In The Hospital Lyrics 15 years ago
I am almost positive that the chorus is:

"Nothing is left,
Only a memory -
A glitch in my mind
Until you come back to me."

With that aside, I think it's an excellent song. I got the impression that it is talking about a violent feud between two lovers, which subsequently hospitalized the speaker and ended the relationship.

The Faint – Fulcrum and Lever Lyrics 15 years ago
I didn't mean for it to come across like I thought the song was about flying sans the use of machinery. I meant it more along the lines of the childish ambitions of wanting to fly, thus using a poorly made catapult to launch oneself into the air and continue to fly on one's own.

It's not about the Space Race, I honestly don't know what I was thinking at the time, I apologize, although the mentioning of being launched "into orbit or space" still kind of vaguely upholds the idea...I may have just read too much into it.

I do agree with the maturation the narrator goes through - I didn't even think of it that way!

Jenny Lewis – Godspeed Lyrics 15 years ago
Thembraincells seems to have gotten the meaning down - Jenny is offering a piece of advice to a dear friend of hers who is stuck in a perpetually abusive relationships, giving her a shoulder to lean on, telling her to keep her head up, etc etc.

I like the sense of irony that the chorus creates: although Jenny wants to help her friend is every way and wants her to leave this chauvinistic pig, she can't get through to her. Thus, she leaves her friend with some parting words and bids "godspeed to you". Great, great song!

This song may be one of the most stunning things Jenny Lewis has ever done/created. Once again, she is providing listeners with a story, but this time it is truly about herself - the most personal I think she's ever gotten in a song.

Hopefully one day I'll hear this live =P

Jenny Lewis – Bad Man's World Lyrics 15 years ago
Let me just start off by saying I adore the portions of the song like "And then you failed at that, too." The way Jenny's voice takes on that spooky quality, it's very haunting.

The lyrics are self-explanatory: it's a self-evaluation. Jenny (or the narrator) clearly recognizes she wasn't born for the exactly right reasons and is setting out to find her purpose, despite the hardships she had to face (not to be overly cliche).

I really enjoy the personal aspect of not only this song, but the entire album as well.

Jenny Lewis – The Next Messiah Lyrics 15 years ago
Honestly, not my favorite song on the album, it kind of continues too long. With that aside, I definitely see this being about the lack of her father's presence, as xroseparade stated Jenny as explaining. If that is the case, calling him "the next messiah" is very sarcastic, which really contrasts with the upbeat music behind it. Although I'm not a big fan of the actual song, I like the story it tells - Jenny is always perfect with that.

Jenny Lewis – Black Sand Lyrics 15 years ago
I believe that this song is all about falling in love with someone in the midst of a war. The "black sand" is meant to be a metaphor for the massive amounts of ashes covering the world. Also, the song is about embracing that love, even in the face of disaster, because as Jenny's lover inquires, "Who's gonna love you, buried underground?", i.e., love and be loved before you die.

This may be wrong, but, I was also thinking that the mother's "mate" in the song is some sort of prisoner of war, from whatever side is in opposition to hers. Thus, they must love each other in the time they have before "all that's lost is found".

Beautiful song, though. The ending is really powerful.

The Faint – Forever Growing Centipedes Lyrics 15 years ago
I didn't intend for what I said to be taken to mean that he wants to live just to be a burden - if you read correctly, I was just mentioning some portions of society's views on the elderly, to go along with what I thought the centipedes meant.

Yes, it is talking about consequences, but, I don't see how the narrator's choices "exploding into thousands of pieces" and him in turn "becom[ing] a shard" is all that positive. In addition, he may or may not be with someone he "loves," which I'm very reluctant to begin to agree with, but, they're hiding from death - not really a positive way to look at spending an overly extended life together.

Clearly I'm the only one so far who thinks that, so, spencerkil and zedzedBadnusty, you guys win. Hoorah for a love song

The Faint – A Battle Hymn for Children Lyrics 15 years ago
I hope this song doesn't get criticized too much for possibly being one of their most politically driven/straightforward songs. It's a great song though, definitely a great album closer.

I liked what Seahighster said, about looking to people, expecting them to have answers, them leading you astray and just breeding "pure ambivalence towards our country." I'm not a big American spirit kind of person, so, needless to say, I agree with the last verse immensely.

The switching of names that the narrator refers to each verse allows for the idea that no one has the real answers to shine through: not the teachers, the army sergeants, or the preachers. I love the fact that the preachers don't have the answers either, since the church these days is so corrupt. Ironically, the people designated to lead us in battle, to serve "God's country" have no idea why they're even there.

What baffles me most if what gave the USA the right to think that WE are God's country, when there are over 120 countries throughout the world. I'm not looking to get into any heated debates, though. Just wanted to make that little point and move on.

The line "We have violent games on pause at home" is perhaps one of the most striking in the whole song, filled with double meaning as well. Children/the rest of the world can learn about violence through their mass-produced, mind-driveling video games at home and less people would have to be killed in the process of that learning. But at the same time, should we be learning of violence in any kind of way like that, especially being given "guns for toys". That's how the USA really runs things: make the enemies scared by making them think we're really strong and ready - put this gun in your hand and stand up straight. Not the way to go about things, really.

I like how you can read the line "If they're both the same god, then the battle's over/details" in two ways. The first is reading "Details" as the narrator's dismissal of the battle, plagued by nonchalance and disregard, or as the end of the sentence before it, that the battle itself is over nothing but trivial details, not larger matters that were supposedly what brought us into battle in the first place.

Then in the name of peace we make war. The USA's real motive: make war when it needn't be made, or isn't expected. That'll show 'em. Yeah...sure.

The Faint – Fish in a Womb Lyrics 15 years ago
Chainsaw Arm, I may be wrong, but I think it may not be blood, considering if we were to go with the birth defect/gills idea, which I really agree with, it would most likely be water spewing out from the slice in his neck.

This is a tremendously brilliant song. Although the lyrics seem pretty simple, they're riddled with bigger meanings/imagery. I love the image of the mother being filled with popcorn (aka cotton balls) and covered in strawberry sauce (blood).

As everyone has said, the line "Every day is like the first, but with a harder head" is excellent - it expresses the trial and tribulations that a new born human being experiences starting from the very moment it emerges from that "tank full of fluid".

The Faint – Forever Growing Centipedes Lyrics 15 years ago
I think this is a satiric outlook on peoples' insistence on living forever. Took me a while to figure out what the hell Todd meant by "forever growing centipedes" but I think I've come up with something. When one thinks of a centipede, I doubt its purpose in the insect world comes to mind. All we'd worry about is that it's a pretty nasty looking creature, unwanted wherever it's been found, and it's almost like a miniscule monster, some sort of insidious plague/disease. That's how, unfortunately, some people feel about the elderly: they become a burden, an unwanted pustule on the ass of the family that just won't leave. Somehow, the narrator still wants to be around. Ironic indeed.

In the last verse, I took the "timeless web" to be something relating to cryogenically freezing someone, like Walt Disney (I think?). That becomes particularly noticeable when the narrator says he could "learn to postpone death under a microscope."

None of my theories really incorporate most of the other portions of the song though. It's probably one of the most cryptic Faint songs to date. Love it to death nonetheless.

The Faint – I Treat You Wrong Lyrics 15 years ago
Only The Faint could make listeners feel like they're in the middle of the argument, yet loving it just the same with the music itself.

Pretty easy meaning - getting caught up in the rage of the argument, getting flustered, pretending like nothing ever happened, trying to take back what was said, trying to make things right.

I love the play on words in the line "But if you see it my way, we could both see it right." Seems like such an arrogant thing to say, but at the same time such a truth. Odd twist at the end of the song: the narrator finally experiences recognition, in that he knows his partner/girlfriend deserves more than a hothead like him.

One of my favorite songs on the album, I must say.

The Faint – Mirror Error Lyrics 15 years ago
The battle between what WE see in the mirror and what is actually there. Tragic superficiality and the painful realization that we cannot change who we truly are, no matter what trendy jewelry we wear or what disgusting place on our bodies we choose to pierce next.

The last verse makes me think of the classic poem by Dunbar, in which the first line is "We wear the mask" and that pretty much goes hand-in-hand with this song. Your face is just a mask - you may be a perfect ten but one of the ugliest of God's science projects on the inside.

The Faint – Psycho Lyrics 15 years ago
More of The Faint's songs are about subjects other than society/politics than you think JMerrill. Most of those "other subject" songs are much better than this one, for instance "Phone Call" and "Desperate Guys" to name a few.

Regardless, for once the song at hand's meaning is painfully clear. Bad and hasty actions breed nothing but the same kind of reactions and now both parties have to deal with the repercussions.

The Faint – Fulcrum and Lever Lyrics 15 years ago
Haha, I like the idea of Todd thinking about what a really white kid would rap about. I got that feeling as well when I first heard the song.

This song's about mankind's obsession with learning to fly, which is taken as far as flying without the use of machinery. I particularly enjoyed the juxtaposition of the making of the homemade flying machine with the rocket ship imagery and count down in the background. Great sense of irony. During the space race, the rocket ship was the form of transportation to end all - now America, and the rest of the world, could stick its nose in the one place it hadn't been yet. Now that achievement seems to be reduced to something as mediocre as a piece of wood balancing on a lever in a backyard. The narrator even goes so far as to mock the Space Race as nothing more than a "circus", which I thought was quite funny.

I wonder what kinds of scores the USA and USSR would have gotten for the things they did back then.

The Faint – Machine in the Ghost Lyrics 15 years ago
Mental activity versus physical action (I didn't read much of the wikipedia article provided by the commentator above). That seems to be a pretty valid description of the song, although it seems to go beyond that.

It's a basic questioning of the cycle of existence and its evolution over time. Unlike most people who debate this topic in our modern day and age, the narrator here is extending the question to all walks of life and background - all sorts of religions and persons inspired by said religions, scientists, mathematicians and even the little people (unfortunately categorized as "acid heads").

Even at that, though, the narrator mentions how humans hope we're not alone, even though we strictly focus on the advancement of ourselves. As much as humans would like to think they want other lifeforms out there besides us, they'd be scared shitless if things like that were found to exist. And of course we'd most likely set out to overtake them.

I like the sense of responsibility the narrator assumes in the very first verse, however satiric I know feel he is being. He makes his own mistakes, but without the interference of the "ghost" in the "machine" aka rational thought within the predatory body. Action without thought, as we all know, gets us nowhere.

"Cults arise from egos, sick with poltergeists and feelings." Humans allow themselves to have unnecessarily large egos, and I think that what the narrator is trying to say is that sometimes such egos can create TOO MUCH thought, overthought, hence the "SICK with poltergeists..."

Great song - love the simple electronic beats.

The Faint – The Geeks Were Right Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is most definitely NOT about some silly little acid trip - I think most Faint fans would agree that most of their songs are not as one-dimensional (if not silly) as that.

As was said before, this is a glimpse into a "robo-future" as someone called it - how life will be lived out in x number of years if we continue to let technology replace different aspects of our lives.

The whole song is great, especially lyrics-wise, but, the part that seems most poignant to me is the part about the "egghead boys". We get The Faint's wonderful satire in this little portion, when he mentions how "that's what the girls like," which goes on to become a metaphor not just for silly little high school girls falling for the geeky boys years later, but for all of human society becoming so entranced by technological advances.

Not only is this machine-laden world taking over modern society, it's virtually eliminating the importance of past artistic endeavors (aka the Bach lines, in which "eyeballs bulge" when people hear his music). The parts about REM sleep I think have to do with the narrator traveling back in time (through his dreams) with his chain saw in hand. Elevator = time machine, as everyone mentioned. The line "If I could bring things back, they'd feedback wild" pretty much goes to mean that if he [the narrator] could bring parts of the past forward with him in time to show these techie-junkies, they'd be hysterical, either with rage or excitement, or maybe even both. The narrator's usage of the chain saw also seems to represent the raw savageness of the past, rather than the excessiveness of the future (chemical wars and plastic islands at sea, etc.). He chooses to embrace the past and use it wisely in order to shape the future.

"Watch what the humans ruin with machines" is a beautiful line - it captures the song's meaning completely.

The Faint – Get Seduced Lyrics 15 years ago
In the previous few comments, the song's meaning has been pretty much covered, I just wanted to add a few little tidbits.

Clearly the song is about the corruption of Hollywood society and it vehemently dismisses regular society's obsession with the stars. But, as hinted at in the line, "...and watch us stare into the void" a different kind of obsession seems to be at hand. Not only do people love the stars simply because they provide cheap entertainment, it's almost as if we gravitate towards such out of misery/unhappiness/boredom caused by our own lives, aka "the void" mentioned above.

Like Poly61 said, another main issue addressed in the song is celebrities' insistence on complaining about such trivial problems, such as looking fat on TV, etc. It's these stars' lives that are being corrupted, as well as those of the general public. "It's not love, that's sex on the first night." Everything has been reduced to simple thrills and fixes - not anything worthwhile.

The chorus pretty much wraps everything up, though. What IS "rad" about living life under the harshly judgmental magnifying glass of the paparazzi and Big Brother America? What do we find attractive in these stars' pathetic lives and WHY?

Degradation at its best (or worst, depending on how you want to look at it).

The Decemberists – On the Bus Mall Lyrics 16 years ago
Alright, so, I'm not here to argue whether or not the characters in this song are gay prostitutes, runaway lovers, or whatever - I just want to make an observation.

Has anybody else recognized glaring references to Margaret Atwood's novel "The Handmaid's Tale"? Before I read about the song being about prostitution and trying to make a living, I could always realize similarities. In the second verse, all the women of Gilead are "easy targets" because they're used simply for their ability to bear children. It turns out that the "old men," as are later mentioned as having "limp dicks," of the society are the infertile ones. For the fourth verse, one of the main characters, Moira, turns out to be a bit of a promiscuous woman, who escapes Gilead in order to "make a quick buck." All the other women in the society, Handmaids, Aunts and Wives, bite their tongues and don't acknowledge Moira's rebellious backlash, hence the "sucked our lips into our lungs."

The chorus really solidifies the parallels with the book. Gilead is in essence a "hovel" and the Handmaids certainly do "fuse like a family" in order to make life livable. They are refused access to makeup ("take up your make-up") and many save their vitamins, as well as other items, for safekeeping or later use ("pocket your pills away"). Although the end of the chorus clearly mentions males, "kings among runaways," I almost see it as the Commanders speaking - they DO feel and act like kings among this "gadabout crowd" of ready-to-bear women.

The portion about "old Chinese merchants" can be seen as a reference to the shopping trips that the women must make everyday - they are surrounded by Chinese/oriental individuals, both salesmen and tourists. "We never let the bastards get us down" is almost the exact phrase that the main character, Offred, finds chiseled into her room's floor - "Nolite te bastardes carborundorum." Although the phrase is very comical and incorrect Latin, it translates to the lyric in the song. Finally, the Commanders' infertility grows into a big joke among the Handmaids, hence them "laugh[ing] off the quick tricks and the old men with limp dicks..."

Anyway, now that I've chewed your ears off, I'm finished haha. Nonetheless, On the Bus Mall is one of my all-time favorite Decemberists songs. It's really beautiful.

Interpol – The Lighthouse Lyrics 16 years ago
First off, I think this song is terrible: it is by far the worst song on Our Love to Admire. It doesn't fit at all with the rest of the songs, it's droning and over-all flat out boring. Wrecking Ball would have made a fine closer. Regardless...

In short, this song talks about the narrator, while not taking risks himself and instead residing in solace (a.k.a. the lighthouse), spends his time trying to help/save others, those he has many a time warned of the dangers but have chosen to not heed his warnings. He meets their refusals with bitterness, saying "let the waves have their way now," meaning, let the waves have at them: I'm done.

If anything, I get the creeping sense of agoraphobia in this song, but the feeling is lost by the song's lack of deliverance.

Interpol – Who Do You Think? Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think this song is about any sort of relationship with a woman. I get the feeling that it is about an individual who is constantly obsessed with time and aging, who always feels the presence of time right behind him, hence the "who do you think that is there?"

He meets this struggle with time with power and determination: "Slow decay, I won't stop fighting yet," of which I think the meaning is painfully clear. "Through the wax and the wane" supports the idea of time being constantly there, nudging him forward.

"I only call them when I know I don't see them" I think is about how time captures people unexpectedly, when you least see it coming.

This is from a literary point of view though, so I could be off, but I definitely do not think this has anything to do with a romantic relationship.

I have a non-song meaning related comment: has anyone else recognized the similarity of some of the guitar solos with those in The Pixies' song "Where is My Mind?"? Regardless, those parts are fabulous.

I firmly agree with everybody else's comments that this song is in fact about drugs, etc. I also think it involves a heavy idea of hallucination, made apparent by the lines "You're so young..." It makes me think maybe the person he is speaking about isn't so beautiful/young like he says? Irony? Maybe. Appearance versus Reality? Another maybe.

Interpol is known for being open-ended...

Now, I hate to not focus on what I think this song "means," considering that is what this site is about, but I feel the need to comment on the song in general.

I really enjoy the beginning, but to the contrary of what everyone else has said: I hate it as soon as it builds up. The rhythm is terrible and it fucks up the flow. The album as a whole is terrible, minus very few songs ("Buttoned Down" and "Soon We'll Be Living in the Future") and this song is the "perfect" way to end such a disappointing album.

I dislike how all of the songs sound nothing like old Straylight Run and the fact that Michelle sings so often makes me angry. I liked it better when she only sang on two songs (or subtle back up on others) and not sound like she's singing at the mall.

I hope everyone bashes me for this comment.
