Julian Casablancas – 30 Minute Boyfriend Lyrics 14 years ago
my god, this song is SEXY. amazing. i would almost say i'd love to hear this on phrazes, but it's a little too dancey to fit in with the album's vibe. the beat and the dark feel is there, but i don't know. not a phrazes track.

in the beginning of the song, it sounds like he's just fooling around with this girl, but as time goes on it gets a bit more serious and he gets very obsessed.

i'd like to hear jules sing this song about me. ;)

Depeche Mode – It Doesn't Matter Lyrics 14 years ago
this is one of those songs that just hits you. i really relate to this one. it's about two people who were in love, they broke up, one moved on and is with someone else, and the other person hasn't moved on. they're still friends, and they might be together again someday. even if they do get back together, the speaker knows that it may not work out...maybe because the two don't know went wrong in the first place.

"If we should meet again
Don't try to solve the puzzle
Just lay down next to me
And please don't move a muscle"

that's the only way for them to be together. don't think, just be.

The Killers – This Is Your Life Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is beautiful. It's definitely my favourite on D&A, perhaps my favourite Killers song of all time.

Candy talks to strangers
Thinks her life's in danger
No one gives a damn about her hair
It's lonely down on track street
She used to go by Jackie
The cops, they'll steal your dreams and they'll kill your prayers
Take a number where the blood just barely dried

(This is the beginning of Candy/Jackie's 'career' as a prostitute. She beings talking to men she doesn't know with the job, because she has to make money and get by somehow. Her life is in danger, she has to save herself. No one cares what she looks like, she's just there for their pleasure. It might be a bit graphic, but the "Take a number where the blood just barely dried" refers to the bed(s) that she has sex on and the blood is on the sheets, or it is metaphorical for her own pain. The men are lining up to use her, taking numbers to be next. She has dreams to get out of the place she's in, praying that her prostitution will be enough money to be free again. The cops, though, bust her actions and she thinks that they're stealing her chance.)

Wait for something better
No one behind you
Watching your shadows
This feeling won't go

(Jackie knows that something better has to come along eventually, but she has a feeling of constant hopelessness. She wants a day where people don't always see her as this terrible thing. The shadow line probably refers to her shadow at night while on the street corner or wherever she might be.)

Crooked wheels keep tuning
Children, are you learning
Climatize but don't you lose the plot
A history of blisters
Your brothers and your sisters
Somewhere in the pages we forgot

(This part is Brandon/the narrator/or even a man in Jackie's life speaking, inserting his own thoughts in to Jackie's story. Her sad state keeps snowballing, nothing is getting better. He's telling us to learn from Jackie. You can focus on the place that she's gotten herself to, but you can't forget the plot. You can't ignore the chain of events that got her to this wretchedness. They are ultimately to blame for Jackie's loneliness.)

Take a number Jackie
Where the blood just barely dried
You know I'm on your side

(The men are the usually ones that are controlling her life, and now, she has to take her own number. She's in line behind all those men, her state has gotten so bad. Brandon/narrator/man in Jackie's life, though, is good. He wants to help her and show her the path.

Wait for something better
No one behind you
Watching your shadows
You gotta be stronger than the story
Don't let it blind you
Rivers of shadow
This feeling wont go

(Same as previous chorus for the most part. Jackie can't make excuses and say, "Oh, well I'm stuck here now. Look at all that I've done. I'm terrible." She has to be stronger than that, and not be overcome by her dark past.

And the sky is full of dreams
But you don't know how to fly
I don't have a simple answer
But I know that I could answer
Something better

(This is a bit self-explanatory. She sees he future and what she wants for herself. She just can't obtain it. Brandon/narrator/man in Jackie's life doesn't know how he can exactly help her, but he knows that anything would be better that the answer (prostitution) that she made for herself.

This feeling won't go

Wait for it (x4)

This song is undoubtedly about being abducted by aliens. It could also have some religious connotations, which in generally common in Killers songs.

Brandon vowed to go back to his storytelling lyrical style, and here we have it! The next album is going to be ace if this and Neon Tiger are any indications.

Patrick Wolf – Demolition Lyrics 16 years ago
There are few songs as beautiful and heart wrenching as this one. I agree with most of you on the subject of this song, and I've experienced that subject quite recently.

You fall in love with someone, throwing every part of your soul into the relationship. You know that it'll end one day, and everything you gave will go along with it. That thought nags at you day in and out. It's unavoidable that perfection will turn to rubble. And as the day for the relationship to end comes, you want to be free from the misery and pain, but yet you'd do anything to hold onto the love, commitment, and sacrifices. You try so hard to turn the relationship around and save it from falling apart. Alas, there's nothing you can do. The love is gone, the relationship is gone, and the pain is always present.

Such a perfect song.

I haven't had much time to mull over this one, but it's either a love song or a more religious song.

This song, just like Tranquilize, is a perfect blend of Sam's Town and Hot Fuss. It's gorgeous. I love it. The synth slays me.

I do think the final bit has to do with politicians, TheTellTaleHeart. I know for a fact that Brandon does not support the popular sentiment of Bush bashing, so he is definitely not calling out Bush specifically with that lyric.

The Killers – Tranquilize Lyrics 16 years ago
Okay, DID post a disclaimer at the beginning of this, but it was taken off. These lyrics were compiled by a few of us over at TKC (The Killers Community) and they are nowhere near finished/correct. They will be edited once we get a better version to judge from.

I haven't had much time to interpret this song, as I'm still in shock. This song has already brought the Killers' success to a higher level...it's genius. Brandon's lyrics always amaze me, but this is so deep, so electrifying. He has never written better. They have never made a more gripping song. I must say that it has the same dark romantic feel from Hot Fuss. I find it interesting that this song fully embodies Hot Fuss and Sam's Town, like I said with the darkness from HF, but also with the heavier rock of ST. ST might've been a walk in the sunshine, but Tranquilize is the epilogue to the story...what happens when the sun goes down on Sam's Town.
Lou's grave vocals and Brandon's punctuate wails perfectly offset each other...they carrying a this frantic, paranoid feel throughout the track. The children's choir brings that feeling to the next level...it's absolutely haunting. This song was carefully crafted by the boys...it's so obvious. It's gives you a nightmarish feeling, but Lou's part at the end shows the light at the end of the tunnel.
God, I am so amazed. These boys are meant for greatness...if anyone had a doubt, Tranquilize has surely won them over.

The Killers – Get Trashed Lyrics 17 years ago
Thank god for Brandon Flowers and his capability to write songs that somehow ease my heart. The meaning of the song has obvious now, but it's about loving someone with everything that you have, despite what they did to you, and the other person won't come back to you. God, doesn't that hurt? When you feel that kind of rejection, you'd do anything to not feel the pain, and his voice perfectly reflects the hopelessness of his situation.

The Killers – My List Lyrics 17 years ago
I finally understand this song after going through probably the biggest heartbreak of my entire life. I see it as these two people were horribly in love and now something happened between them and the other person is trying their best to get them back and to show them how much they mean to them. The line about the eyes gets to me more than any other phrase ever could. So here is my very personal and emo interpretation of "My List".

Let me wrap myself around you
Let show me show you how I see it
And when you come back in from nowhere
Do you ever think of me?
Your heart, not able
Let me show you, how much I care

[Let me hold you and love you and I can show you where you've gone wrong. I can show you the way I see; I see we can be happy if you'd let me explain to you how I feel. Now that you've left me, do you think of me as much as I think of you? I know that your heart isn't able to love me like it was able and I know you're scared to love me again, but I could fix it if you could give me a chance to show you how much you mean to me.]

I need those eyes to tide me over
I'll take your picture when I go
Gives me strength and gives me patience
But I'll never let you know
I got nothing on you babe
But I always said I'll try
Let me show you
How much I care
Sometimes it gets hard
Don't you know?

[Your eyes are, and have always been, the one thing that could pull me through the worst. I'll take your picture with me now that I can't have those eyes. I need them give me strength and hope in life and you could never understand what they mean to me. Even though you've hurt me, I've got nothing on you. I don't want to get back at you. I always told you I'd always love you and I'd always try to keep you, so I'm going to hold up to my word and do whatever I can to keep you by my side. We both know that love is hard, but you have to try when things seem the bleakest.]

Don’t give the ghost up
just clench your fist
You should have known by now
You were on my list
(x3)

Your heart, not able
Your ways, they're not able
Let me show you (x3)
How much I care

[Please, just don't give up on us. Be strong and I know we can make it. After all this time, you should've know that I love you more than anything. Again, I know your heart is scared to love me and you don't know if you can anymore. But I can show you something new if you'd give me and us one more chance.]

This is truly about Brandon's uncle. This song is hot...hot vocals, lyrics, bass. Here's a excerpt from an article in which Brandon talks about the song.

UNCLE JONNY:

Uncle Jonny is my mother’s brother. He’s the black sheep of the family. Every couple of years something would happen. He’s done everything from shoot himself to drug addictions yet somehow he’s ended up alright. He’s really a nice guy. He’s heard the song and he’s happy to be immortalised because he’s a rocker, he’s always got a Zeppelin shirt on. Jonny deserves the song’s riff (laughs). You don’t usually use the word riff with us, but this is one of the greatest riffs of all time. I guess it’s a little bit inspired by being on the road with U2. We learnt a lot from watching them.

It has nothing to do with Jenny, she was killed. Nor is this part of the Murder Trilogy, the third song is Leave The Bourbon On The Shelf.

It's obviously about a a man cheating on a woman for another man, and she wants to go out and find a man to take off her mind, and she goes where the white boys dance.

This song is so funky...and I find the vocals quite sexy.

This song might be my favourite that I've heard off of Sam's Town. I was very honoured to be the one to submit the lyrics. ANYWAY!

This song means a lot to me...like lulabella said, this song is all about don't give up. Although I've read this song is about Brandon Flowers' alcoholic father, for me, it has more of an relationship meaning.

I take it as a person in a relationship that's really having a hard time keeping everything in a good situation. Let's call this person Jane for the sake of making this easy on me. Jane really can't take it anymore.

(And I can't pull it any longer,
The sun is beating down my neck)

Jane makes excuses to her loved one for why everything is going downhill, but the excuses won't solve anything, it all comes down to fate to decide what will happen.

(So I ran with the devil
Left a trail of excuses,
Like a stone on the water,
The elements decide my fate,)

Jane keeps trying to keep the relationship going, and her significant other keeps saying, life's hard enough and their relationship just makes it more taxing. She thinks he's going to leave her, she pleads for him not to. She needs him to be strong; even though they have a lot going against them, there's more to it all than the problems.

(When I offer you survival,
You say it's hard enough to live,
Don't tell me that it's over,
Stand up,
Poor and tired,
But more than this)

He thinks it's all better between them, he thinks it's all perfect, but Jane sees otherwise. He isn't worried about the relationship, so obviously he's not going to see things from a negative view. He makes her think everything is okay, but only for a while.

(How do you know that you're right?
If you're not nervous anymore,
It's not so bad, it's not so bad)

Jane keeps switching between two ideas: it's all okay and it's not okay. She doesn't know what to think, so she keeps pushing on for a point of perfection in the relationship, but obstacles get in the way.

(I feel my vision slipping in and out of focus,
But I'm pushing on for that horizon,
I'm pushing on,
Now I've got the blowing wind against my face)

He starts throwing little arguments at her, and she keeps questioning is it okay? She finally realizes their relationship is going nowhere, it's horrible. The realization of this hits Jane hard. She knows she won't feel happiness until the holes in the relationship are patched, and it doesn't seem likely that will happen. (like rain in the desert) So, she might as well throw in the towel.

(So you sling rocks at the rip tide,
Am I wrong or am I right?
I hit the bottom with a "huh!"
(??) Quite strange,
I get my glory in the desert rain,
Watch it go..."bling".)

Jane knows in the end, they're going to make it through, make it out of all the hell, and the relationship is going to climb 'higher and higher'.

(Higher and higher,
We're gonna take it,
Down to the wire,
We're gonna make it,
Out of the fire,
Higher and higher.)

She realizes how great they are, and knows that it really won't be that hard to hold on. He'll always remember her for trying to keep it together no matter where they might end.

(It ain't hard to hold,
When it shines like gold,
You'll remember me. )

In the end, I feel it is a song of confusion, insecurity, and holding on through the hard times. I can see myself in this song so much. It's beautiful how the Killers' music can mean something so great to everyone. I also suggest everyone read my comment on Sam's Town...it's better than this one ;)
