The Tragically Hip – Nautical Disaster Lyrics 7 years ago

A much more obvious translation of this poem is in the popular relationship concept.

I had this dream where I relished the fray
And the screaming filled my head all day
(remembering the intense fighting with his passionate tempestuous Irish girlfriend.)

It was as though I'd been spit here
Settled in, into the pocket
Of a lighthouse on some rocky socket
Off the coast of France, dear
(feeling isolated from connection in the relationship)

One afternoon, four thousand men died in the, water here
And five hundred more were thrashing madly
As parasites might, in your blood
(making hard decisions to let go, of the good and bad with her, some of which will not go easily.)

Now I was in a lifeboat designed for ten, ten only
Anything that systematic would get you hated
It's not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated

The selection was quick, the crew was picked in order
And those left in the water
Got kicked off our pant leg
And we headed for home
(the results of his decisions are selfish and rash, but clear and firm)

Then the dream ends when the phone rings
"You doing all right?"
He said, "It's out there most days and nights
But only a fool would complain"
(later, support from a friend, encouraging him to try again to find love)

Anyway, Susan, if you like
Our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory
As those fingernails scratching on my hull
(his remorse about losing her is not a faint sound in his memory, it consumes him to the core, and the lingering feeling of her fingernails on his back only etches it all in deeper.)

In my mind the lyrics are about Western society in general. 'Off the coast of France' can be word play to indicate England or even Canada.

In the story Gordon is an observer of the disastrous situation then the dream shifts and he finds himself a survivor on a limited supply of lifeboats.

With our current state of affairs here in North America if calamity or disaster ever struck hard there would be an ensuing situation similar to that happening in the water. Many could die, and those who remain would be left scrambling for resources. However, if you simply take our current society and fast forward time without any calamity, according to the trends, you would in essence be simulating a disaster of epic proportions.

The few in position at the top have their survival systematically planned out (lifeboat), limited and secure, the rest left to struggle and fight and most surely will be 'kicked off the pant legs' if they try to cling to the boat.

But only a fool would complain.

As a survivor in this story, Gordon's character seems to lack connection both with the present around him along with the glaring absurdity of the larger situation, the latter, merely lingering in his mind like a dream that is faded, the present, barely registering in memory, possibly due to the drive it would take to ignore so much suffering.

Just the way this song is hitting me these days.

The Be Good Tanyas – Dogsong (Sleep Dog Lullaby) Lyrics 11 years ago
The first lyric sets the song up as coming to terms with the fading of a recent relationship. 2nd lyric speaks of longing and loneliness as life goes on, seemingly more without her now. With winter representing a perception of the prime of her relationship life, the song speaks of that prime passing, ravaged by the changing seasons of life, her cares now care less and send up their mournful howls in her heart.

I pulled this song out of the back of my head this morning. I can not recall hearing it anytime recently. It just came to me so I looked it up trying to remember what it was. I am surprised at how I can see my life through it. I have moved beyond dreaming and cold nights but the feeling still lingers at times. In a non-relationship perspective I can see the song translating into more personal dreams and desires that did not ever seem to materialize despite the confidence and intensity of the emotions involved in the time spent enjoying them.

I agree with the media/entertainment industry interpretation but I have watched the video a few times now and see a lot of clues to big oil and big business in the imagery and characters she portrays. Considering the theories floating around these days I can see the "we" doing the giving as a larger entity that encompasses more than just the media and what they are "giving" us is a lot less than we realize.

Natalie Merchant – I May Know The Word Lyrics 13 years ago
Its about spirituality, faith or passion for life, however you like to view that sort of thing. About the difficulty that comes with learning in life what you want to believe spiritually then trying to find commitment to go with it, the ability to shed your indifference.

"something move me, someone prove me wrong" ---Help me let go of my disbelief.

She has resisted so long she worries she may not be able to let go. She has learned enough tho that she fears she may truly need to let go and may end up begging in prayer for help. Familiar with her struggle she sees her rigidity as walls, knows there is a freedom or way out but has little hope of finding it on her own, especially with the demons or routine distractions wandering around in her mind that she struggles with and controls into submission but can never seem to entirely get rid of...

Sound familiar?

Smoke Or Fire – Culture As Given Lyrics 18 years ago
'and when it's all over
we're left with the mess'

I see this as sung by a growing up child who has figured out what has been happening to his world for the past few generations. "This war" being the struggle to survive as an individual under the constant sensory and mental bombardment our societies present. Each one of us makes choices throughout our lives that will in some way or another leave an effect that our children will experience. The lyrics seem to be more specifically about 'a' war but the organization or machine that is 'doing' the war is the same one that is 'doing' the corporate development of our society. I see the same destructive forces from the same sources of motivation acting within our own land and affecting us. If we consider 'us' as the people, from the land, one with our future generations, timeless, then the only thing that is truly important is the place for us to be. It is unfortunate that we have been so led astray from this basic principle of life that we, all of us, unwittingly damage our 'place to be' with our most basic of daily routine habits. At this point, 'killing' is a true aspect of the accumulation of our actions on our place, spurred on by the machine.

And the faces that will receive the land will never see ours to know just how duped we were.

"You broke down when you believed a single word."
