Owl Eyes – Faces Lyrics

Sick of being hit on, and lured away from the more interesting path she wants to follow, so conflicted when attracted to the right man. |

@[lola500:33339] Yes, it's like the real turn-on is the foreplay and anticipation, with the acts being more mechanical and choreographed. |

Juice Newton – Queen of Hearts Lyrics

"Playing with the Queen of Hearts" can mean flirting seductively; the problem with which is that you don't only get attention from the one you want (the "Joker"), but also from undesirables.
One solution is to go on the run ("a life of crime"), both to keep the undesirables away and avoid the heartbreak and stress from orbiting your target body. |

Beyoncé – Formation Lyrics
|
Why is boasting such a big part of R&B and Hip-Hop culture? Is is because both were born in poverty and struggle, and so can't afford self-criticism (which is actually self-praise -- it shows off how much one can spare (Samuel Johnson))? |

Beyoncé – Partition Lyrics

There's no desire expressed for her man, just her pleasure in servicing him. Plays to the stereotype of female sexuality being about the vanity of being desired rather than the humility of desire, even though on the surface she's giving rather than receiving. |

MGMT – Flash Delirium Lyrics

|
About being disoriented by sudden fame.
Fame is compelling ("plants bend toward the light", "coming fun"), scary ("gut screams out next to none", "mass adulation not so funny"), transitory ("the hot dog's getting cold"), limited ("you'll never be as good as the Rolling Stones"), and cheesy ("the clean magazine chick lifting up her skirt"). |

Laura Marling – I Am A Master Hunter Lyrics
| 7 years ago
|
No man seems to be able to expand her horizons, so she's become a master baiter.
Sort of a sequel to Rambling Man.
I especially like the line "Nothing not as hard as it tries". Implies there are two ways in: force from a knob (in both senses of the word), or a subtle meeting of minds. |

Something For Kate – Survival Expert Lyrics

Paul is comforting a cancer sufferer. Being realistic ("it's time"), but praising her will to live and her desire hide her illness through the ups and downs. They decide that rather than spending time reminiscing and preparing her legacy they should both live life to the fullest. |

Boz Scaggs – We're All Alone Lyrics

Rita also sings "Owe it to the wind" instead of "Throw it to the wind".
Does Boz also sing this, or does he sing "Throw" that sounds like "Owe"?
"Throw" makes more sense lyrically. |

Is this about how Alison was content to be Jamie's satellite, but then was carried away by her success with The Dead Weather? |

David Bowie – Hallo Spaceboy Lyrics
|
I always took this to be about Bowie's son Duncan. About how having children of your own (or even just to visit) brings chaos and commitment to one's life.
Bowie protects his son with his love and his resources (Tom/Ziggy moondust).

MGMT – Congratulations Lyrics
|
It's a different reaction to success than the boasting and revelling inherent in Hip Hop music.
I guess it's a difference in cultures. It's understandable that a genre that came from the penniless streets, as well as from the party (which is a celebration), celebrates itself, sounding its barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world, while a secure culture with an affluent legacy can spare a more sceptical line.
Both cultures are decadent in their own ways. |

Jewel – Pieces of You Lyrics
|
"She's a pretty girl, do you want to tie her down?"
That's such a concise description of the downside of beauty.
A constant assault of people wanting to lock you into their world, leaving little chance for freedom and self-directed growth. |

Goldfrapp – Pilots (On a Star) Lyrics

Is this about our mortality causing us to be distracted by beautiful things (including celebrities) when our minds should be on more important matters as we pilot both our lives and this world? |

Muse – Stockholm Syndrome Lyrics

To my ears, the verse melody sounds like it was inspired by Radiohead's Knives Out, which was released a couple of years before. |

Bob Dylan – Visions of Johanna Lyrics

I see it as the world daring the artist to overcome it. A world that's hard to pin down and fight because it's slippery and fluid. A bit like King Canute trying to hold back the tide. |

The Kills – Last Day of Magic Lyrics
|
This is what Jamie said on Live from Abbey Road:
Well I always have this thing in my head, like after reading Crime and Punishment (Dostoevsky). There's this Raskolnikov's bedroom in it, and it's one of the most, you know like cinematic visions of his bedroom. You know it's just so clear, I felt like I've been in that room so many times. You know it's like this tiny, tiny little space where there's no room to swing a cat, but the idea is there's this infinite space to hatch some plot. And that's where Last Day of Magic came from. But in Last Day of Magic there's a you know you kind of want your love to want to be there, they're never there at the moment when you kind of finally prove yourself. It was an ode to that moment.

This is one of the best songs of this decade.
Only one thing jars with me: the flag above a door. This isn't a tradition I'm familiar with, and it doesn't feel like the best metaphor. |

Perhaps "Bird fly high by the light of the moon" is a reference to the Israeli jet fighters returning in twilight after bombing the Iraqi reactor. This incident is referenced in Neighborhood Bully, another Infidels song. |

Massive Attack – Teardrop Lyrics

|
Rather than expressing confidence, I think "fearless on my breath" means "easier said than done".
Like it's easier to say "I love you" than to make your actions speak for themselves.
The song is about the guilt of acting in a loveless way to someone you love. |

Silversun Pickups – Little Lover's So Polite Lyrics

About returning to a volatile relationship after an unsatisfying experience with a less energetic one.
