Cat Power – Top Expert Lyrics 6 months ago
I haven't seen this elsewhere on the Internet so... this song seems to be inspired by an article in the Weekly World News of August 3 1989. The headline is literally "Top expert on the supernatural tells you how to catch a ghost in a jar" (see https://books.google.com.au/books?id=Hu0DAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA3&dq=%22top%20expert%20on%20the%20supernatural%22&pg=PA3#v=onepage&q=%22top%20expert%20on%20the%20supernatural%22&f=false).
The article doesn't seem to explain anything else about the lyrics (eg, what is a "magnet shield") but the song must have come from this as the words are exactly the same. Perhaps the song is being sung from the perspective of the ghost being caught??
There are a lot of mistakes in the lyrics above, I'm sure, but I'm not confident to correct most of them... it's "foot by foot, I feel like I'm being cast off".

Q And Not U – Soft Pyramids Lyrics 3 years ago
@[johnnyfuckface1:34833] "soft pyramids" are like tents which are taken down each morning, right? So this is about people who live in fancy cities but have no real homes. "Black Plastic Bag" by the same group is about a similar thing.

Q And Not U – Black Plastic Bag Lyrics 3 years ago
"in love, in love, in sucked in sucked in stuck fast" (presumably not the actual lyrics but that's what I heard at first)

This song seems to have something to do with homeless people sleeping in plastic bags or homemade tents, while the towns they live in build elaborate but pointless monuments.

Life Without Buildings – Let's Get Out Lyrics 5 years ago
in this song, it's 10:30 at night, and the singer, lying awake, calls someone. she hopes to invite them to go out, for purposes which are not made entirely clear but could possibly involve smoking pot and possibly lying down together. she is staying in some unfamiliar and possibly isolated place, and needs to urge the person to take care ("don't fall, feel the pavement is poor!"). unfortunately she has got the person's number slightly wrong and the number just rings, or tings, out. later on, the person thinks that the singer never actually tried to call them, which upsets the singer.

Stereolab – U.H.F. - MFP Lyrics 9 years ago
I think this song makes more sense, and is more interesting, if you read "impotence" for "importance" sometimes.
"see the impotence of the world without importance [ie, gods and masters]" or
"see the importance of the world without impotence"

either way, I feel that the 'lab are doing in this song what Tim Gane used to do in McCarthy: taking a very right-wing authoritarian idea (how impotent we would be if we didn't have gods or masters) and making it seem absurd by repeating it over and over again (at UHF - ultra-high frequency).

Pavement – Our Singer Lyrics 11 years ago
musically this song is a tribute to/complete ripoff of the fall's "hip priest". the title, i believe, refers to a time where malkmus either spoke to or heard a member of the fall, who didn't refer to mark e. smith (the fall singer) by name, but called him "the singer".

a very good song. now i read the lyrics they remind me of rem's "chronic town" ep.

Cat Power – We All Die Lyrics 17 years ago
there are many errors in the transcription! the worst is the fact that it's clearly "we all DRIVE somewhere" (not "try"). it's a very good song for driving. so it's probably about some person who drove away from their family somewhere in a panic/drug addiction and can't get home.

The Fall – Cruiser's Creek Lyrics 17 years ago
the above interpretation is probably true (although the video depicts it as a kind of debauched office party), but is slightly affected by the fact that the single version (ie the one on this nation's saving grace and 458489) doesn't include the party bit at all!

The Fall – Prole Art Threat Lyrics 17 years ago
this is one of the greatest ever songs. i think it's supposed to be about some sort of attempted capitalist revolution in an imagined socialist great britain.

Life Without Buildings – Philip Lyrics 17 years ago
like basically all life without buildings' songs, this is about some ditzy emotional girl falling in love with some very cold emotionless distant man who doesn't understand her. it's quite a good song topic!

Life Without Buildings – The Leanover Lyrics 17 years ago
i really think these lyrics make more sense than any of their other songs! it's about some overbearing guy (that's what "the leanover" refers to, or maybe some kind of "lean-to"-style love nest) who the singer is at first romantically longing for and is scared of losing, but then she starts to doubt the nature of his "contact" and finally decides she doesn't like it.

or, even more explicitly, it's about fellatio: kind of boring for the woman, sometimes.
