this song is so cute!
I took it on such a literal level for so long; it took many listenings before I thought of it more metaphorically - that when you're with someone it's not just their time you're taking up - it's an emotional connection you're building. I like to think of it working on both levels.

Interesting that throughout the album the abusive stepfather is compared to an animal - "king of the jungle" etc - but here he calls himself, the victim, the "wild animal".

is it really "son" and not "sun"? that adds a whole new level...

The Mountain Goats – Hast Thou Considered the Tetrapod Lyrics 16 years ago
"hoping you don't break my stereo
because it's the one thing I couldn't live without"

I think is such a funny representation of adolescent feelings - such focusing on trivial parts of a much bigger, more serious problem.
And music can offer such solace to kids in a bad place - certain songs can have such power that it seems like the only person who understands you is some musician, etc...

sounds me to like a parody of Christian dogma, maybe a really oversimplified and trivialized version for children etc. Don't know, but either way it sounds kind of critical of religion to me.

I just listened to this song for the hundredth time and had a potential revelation - I always wondered about the "decorative grating on my window" and I was thinking it was a connection between the church and the liquor store - the screen in the confessional booth has decorative metalwork on it usually, I think, and liquor stores have those metal grates over the windows when they're closed...?
Just a thought, still don't understand the rust part

The Mountain Goats – No I Can't Lyrics 16 years ago
I've always thought this song talked about a superficial relationship/friendship. You can't really find anything to talk about besides material things, and conversation sometimes ends up just looking into space, pretending to be engrossed in something else. "thank you for coming by/it's nice to see you once in a while" seems so forced and formal when something like that should be natural and actually happy.
